I have to go away twice a year for either a fortnight or 3 weeks at a time. I have 6 tanks and a variety of fish who don't have the same requirements for food. I get a friend to come in and feed but rather than let him guess at what a 'pinch' of flake food is or how much beef heart to feed my discus I prepare everything in advance. For each tank I take 1 day' food and put it in an ice cube tray, top it off with water and freeze it. I do this for every tank then once the ice cubes are frozen I put them in tupperware containers in my freezer, each container being numbered. I stick a postit note on each tank with a number which corresponds to the number on the tupperware containers. All my friend has to do is take one ice cube from the relevant tupperware and drop it into the same numbered tank. No chance that he is going to overfeed anything.
Good info, I'm glad things worked out. I have just a couple of aquariums (125 gal & 75 gal), my real hobby is moto-touring. I am going on a 17 day tour next spring. I think18 days is too long for the fish to go without food and a water change, so perhaps the best thing to do is hire a service to come in every 3-4 days, which seems to be a reasonable time interval.
I also plan my breeding around my longer trips. I never feed when I'm gone. I have never had any major issues with doing this. In the past, I have left my fish in the care of a friend only to come home to aquariums full of uneaten food and lots of dead fish. Once a fish is a juvenile, I'll leave them for up to ten days. Another great vid, amigo. Have fun on your trip!
I can tell you had some relaxing time away, you're hair looked better after you returned! HA! Seriously, I agree, fish can be left unfed for longer than people might think as long as the tank is healthy and has good parameters, etc. I like the idea of turning off the lights to let them sleep, great hack! So, where did you go and what did you do on your vacation? You don't call it holiday? I hope wherever you went and whatever you did was wonderful and well worth it. I had a short 4 day vacation in early December. Went someplace warm, about 85 degrees Fahrenheit versus the 30 degrees Fahrenheit where I live. It was stupendous! I need to move somewhere warmer year round. Anyway, great video and see you soon, Nick!
The 'vacation blocks' as far as I can tell the white is something that dissolves in water at a given rate. There is food pellets embedded in them which are released as the block dissolves. I have no idea what the block is made of or the quality of the food.
i always tell ppl to under feed my tank if i go away. so i just tell them throw in half a teaspoonful of flakes. but yeah like u said if its only a week or less i dont bother feeding them at all.
My nephew went on vacation to Melbourne and brought covid back to share with the family.. my uncle, auntie 4 other young family members all now have it. My uncle is 87 and very ill.
I just watched one of your videos from a year ago. In the video you said clown killi fish were hard to find in Australia. Just thought I’d let you know that there is a pet shop on the Sunshine Coast qld that has them along with a variety of other killi fish and they ship Australia wide. I got most of my fish from this place. (Place is called aquarium central). Also they are only $10.40 each
i agree with you, fish are able to go a couple weeks without food easy... in fact, if they have internal parasites, a nice cleanse can be helpful as the parasites will die if there is no food going thru their digestive tract.
Yeah, i try it myself when my goldfish was sick i didn't feed it for about a week, isolate him from the main tank add salt and heater, now he is healthy.
Yeah fish should be fine for a week at least, if they don't eat they just move less and chill more. Another option is feeding pleco wafers, they tend to hold together pretty well and a lot of fish don't really eat them but if it was 10 days or something they would eventually eat them.
I'm in the car right now using my dad's hotspot, watching this video on the way to a neighbour's holiday houses in Umina - central coast. lol. coincidence or not. but i used a few of these, i have auto feeders on some tanks and some other tanks i have done nothing but fed brine shrimp and done water changes. Great vid as always. The vid has been up for less then an hour and has almost 1k views, like WHAT!!! congrats. happy i have notifications on😁🐟
We are going away for 17days. Never been away for so long usually 14 at the most. Have used the fish blocks and put live plants in which are stripped by the time we get back. Only had gold fish but now getting a betta . Is it possible to leave them that long? Starting to panic. We don't have anyone to come in.
But I am going to leave my fish 3 days and no one can take care of it my brothers are worried about there fish to leave theme for 3 days they want to take the fish to an hotel
Just in 5 month experience keep water creatures, hear others keeper going vacation and his fishes all died to much eat. His son doesnt have idea how much should poured pellets once 2 keepers tell similar story. I think hungry fishes better than dead fishes
I've got 1 large fancy goldfish. I'm leaving for 2 months. I'm going to put him in a 150 gal us water tank outside in the woods with an auto feeder. I hope he fairs thru it. I don't have anyone to come over and take care of him.
Yer I only found you 3 weeks ago as I was researching neon tetra keeping just starting a tank kept fish in my vet nursing class years ago but I’m still new into the hobby but I learnt a lot from your vid’s have fun and hi from the west of Australia
why no holiday snaps or a few details as to where you went and what u did? i am sure you understand by now that there are tons of fish youtube channels, but a key component of attracting subscribers is whether they like you and your style. And, your subscribers like you and are interested in you. One follower was about to cry, thinking u were leaving for good, and another subscriber admired the improved look of your hair! Because, to me, upon ur "return", your hair looked the same, and it appeared you were even wearing the same shirt-- i suspected you were actuslly pranking ur followers and had really gone nowhere, and had shot the before/after parts only a few minutes apart. If so, that was a good one on us-- hahaha!
well, i think you've proven that you're more than capable of an extravagant plan-- just look at your fish room! Got any snaps of old noosa qld? What was the attraction there? Yes, sorry, now I'm being too nosey. i will cease!! but did u realize in your "return" portion of the vid, your hair and shirt were the same? I think the laughs on us hahahaha!!

what a great time for this to come out, thanks so much (going on vacation tomorrow).
Have fun
I am as well
Omg, I really needed the video, I go on holiday all the time!!!

You’re my favorite! I can hear your passion in your videos but you also don’t take things too too seriously. This is such a great hobby
Me too!
I go 3x’s a year for 5 days at a time. No feeding and their fine. No problems
I’ve had my mom feed my fish in the past very nerve racking considering she could just dump food in
The 'vacation blocks' as far as I can tell the white is something that dissolves in water at a given rate. There is food pellets embedded in them which are released as the block dissolves. I have no idea what the block is made of or the quality of the food.
thanks for the honest practical tips!

Good idea
I have been watching you from 13 k
Till 100k soon I will be seeing you in 1M
When I go away I leave food for my tanks in a weekly pill container and have a family member just go and drop the food in for me
My nephew went on vacation to Melbourne and brought covid back to share with the family.. my uncle, auntie 4 other young family members all now have it. My uncle is 87 and very ill.
Hope they all recover. It's going through my family at the moment, so far so good.

Good point
Yeah, i try it myself when my goldfish was sick i didn't feed it for about a week, isolate him from the main tank add salt and heater, now he is healthy.
Thanks for this! To easily ration food for fish caretakers, use daily pill ration containers.
I saw "I am leaving" and was about to cry. I hope you have fun on your vacation.
Thanks!

Thanks for watching
When you have discus fry, that's a whole different ball game
Can I please ask what battery back up units you use and where is the best place to buy from. Thanks

Yes they can scavenge and do well.
Thank you. 👍
Love your little hobby room! What a great way to make money out of a fish hobby, well done :)
Ah I've never trusted those vacation feeder blocks. Surely they must be bad for water quality...
Agreed
Awesome
Thanks!
What’s your battery backup system?
he's realllly pretty
Great video!

When I saw the "Im leaving!" Text in the thumbnail I thought you are leaving the fish keeping hobby
Just in 5 month experience keep water creatures, hear others keeper going vacation and his fishes all died to much eat.
His son doesnt have idea how much should poured pellets once
2 keepers tell similar story.
I think hungry fishes better than dead fishes
I’m going away for 2 months could you tell me if I should put my flower horn in the hands of someone I pay while I’m gone
Going away for 3 days was worried but this made me better
Yeah agree weekend blocks are not great. Caused an ammonia spike in my small 10l tank and kill 4 fish over a weekend.
I've got 1 large fancy goldfish. I'm leaving for 2 months. I'm going to put him in a 150 gal us water tank outside in the woods with an auto feeder. I hope he fairs thru it. I don't have anyone to come over and take care of him.

Thanks for your videos. It's giving me breeding fever to just breed fish left and right. How often do you update your website?
Hi nice fisch room I hav only eight aquarium .
Another great video Nick! awesome idea to leave the lights off as well, i will remember that one.
