As a western classical violinist, I say go for it. I also started late (I started playing at 10, which even though that's still young, that's still late for most violinist). Take some lessons and learn on your own, y'all get their. Adult beginners tend to progress faster than children, so y'all pretty much just pick it right up.

No common syllabus or books are followed..( Suzuki method , Honeyman tutor - Some well known Violin books ) Carnatic Violin : 1. Tuning - G-D-G-D 2. 72 Melakartha Ragams ( Parent ragams ) and more than 1000 janya ragams ( Derived from Parent ragams ). 3. Common syllabus is followed.. Both are equally appreciable.. Whatever you choose learn happily...

Are there any major structural differences? I've played western for 9 years and am looking to switch to a new model, but violins are expensive where I live. If I buy a violin in India and tune it to my usual pitch will I be able to play like usual and put my shoulder rest on it because ik that some indian models don't have chin rests because they don't use shoulder rests
As far as I know the violin design is same for both, and I use dominant strings and bought a separate s.rest. When I went to buy for the first time, the luthier asked me how do i want it to be tuned western or carnatic, but the strings were same.
Indian film songs are composed based on raga. Ragas are played better in carnatic because of gamakam. But film songs are better played better in western violin. Why? And do you teach carnatic violin?

Same syllabus are followed by everyone to teach carnatic music. 3. 72 parent Ragams and more than 1000 janya Ragams .. 4. Holding position in carnatic is little bit easier than Western and playing in tune takes less time than Western as you can sing your Carnatic lessons... Both are equally appreciable...You can choose anyone... Learn happily...😊
A Western Violinist can play a song composed in Carnatic and vice versa... Only thing differs is Gamakam and Vibrato.... You can play any songs if you practice your Violin lessons well..

Age isn't a factor to learn music... I have seen people starting to learn Music in 40's..Just do what you love....✌️
