Having just struggled to make roses from fondant, this video is really helpful. I knew I should've used flower paste but I didn't have any and couldn't order any in time. I will get some now!
Hi..I am so thankful that i found your channel..I am just a newbie in baking, started last november during the pandemic, I dont have a proper training in baking and on cake decorating, I dont have someone to ask for advices to..So I always resort to youtube for the things that I want to learn (though I still have a lot to ask), very glad with your video tutorials, your videos are very helpful..I hope you continue teaching things that could only be learned in a baking class..Keep safe!😍
Thank you for this very helpful tutorial! I am just starting out learning to sculpt sugar paste. Me, not being able to find fondant in my area made me decide to go with sugar paste was a blessing in disguise. Any alternative you can suggest for Crisco? Hard to find Crisco in my city.
Sugar Paste and Fondant are the same thing. 😁. Just called different names based on where you live. Fondant is American. Sugar Paste is UK area. Crisco is just a vegetable shortening, I’m sure you have a name for it where you live. Please let me know what you find. 😁
Great video! Thank you. Do you make your own gumpaste? I've made it once before but I'm not sure i liked that recipe. The consistency of yours looks ideal!
Thank you. 😊. I buy it made. I use satin ice brand. I’ve tried several and found theirs to be the best consistency. If you are interested, I have an affiliate link through my website here you can buy your own. www.caketasticcakes.com/tools-supplies/materials-page
Thanks for this great video. I am new to this and just trying to figure out what's what. This really helped. Where can I get a petal cutter like this? Thanks.
I saw your comments where you told someone you cant use this or fondant on whipcream frosting on the SIDES. BUT ON TOP IS OK CORRECT? AS LONG CAKE DOESNT GO BACK TO THE .FRIDGE. BECAUSE I KNOW THAN IT WILL CAUSE FONDANT (NOT SURE ABT GUM PASTE ) TO SWEAT THIS IS WORKING WITH Stabilize whippedCream (w/cream cheese) TiA. For your respond.
Yeah it’s not just a clear cut thing. Fondant usually does fine in the fridge, gum paste can get ruined. The only time I’ve had fondant get sweaty in the fridge is in summer when it’s hot and humid outside. (I’m in northeast us) Generally speaking, thicker icings work better than the light, fluffy ones when holding decor the sides, but I would think on top, anything could work. The sides can be worked around if you use something to hold the pieces in place - spaghetti or toothpicks or something. That would prevent sliding but be careful of toothpicks. They can hurt people if not removed before serving. A lot of decorating is trial and error. If you have a cream cheese icing, I’d think it’s thick enough to support decor nicely. Especially if chilled first. Cold cakes are so good for decorating. But yeah, I agree with you. I think the top would be fine
Tricia Libra personally, that’s a last resort to me. The gum paste will dry to a point, and form a hard shell around your cake which wouldn’t be nice to cut or eat. I’ll use it on cake dummies so they keep that nice look but I really wouldn’t on an actual cake.
No. It will get a little softer in warmer weather when stored but that is it. I actually store mine in zip lock bags- just squeeze the air out and zip it up! Only time I’ve seen it sweat is when the customer stored their cake in a fridge with the decorations still on it. Took it out, sweat galore! And ruined decorations
@@CaketasticCakes thanks, I was wondering how people sell and ship gumpaste or fondant figures. Someone once told me she packs them with a food safe silica sachet.
@@MsDF936 i used to sell my gum paste figures on ebay and ship all over the country. I never did any of that. I'd wrap them in bubblewrap once fully dry, pad with paper towels, and ship! only problem I ever had was when i tried to ship internationally. The temp changes and week in an airplane didn't work. I would never try to ship a fondant design though, unless i added tylose powder to it first. Thanks again for the question~ :)
Baby and Me gumpaste. They will be saggy otherwise. I have the unicorn cake as a video that shows you the ears and horn being made, if that might help. Thanks for watching!
Use fondant to cover the cake always. Use gumpaste to make decorations that will need to be 3 dimensions or need to really hold their shape. I use it for almost all decorations. They have different textures. Fondant is softer and more stretchy without breaking. Kinda like soft play-doh. Gumpaste is firmer and not nearly so stretchy.
Oh no, I buy mine premade. I use satin ice brand. It ain’t the cheapest, but it’s not the most expensive either and I find works and handles the nicest
Can we add gumpaste decoration on the sides of whipped cream cake? Will they melt ? As fondant decorations tend to melt on whipped cream cakes. Kindly help!
I hate whipped cream cakes for that very reason. In my experience, you can't really add decorations on the side made of fondant or gum paste as they are heavy and will slide off. I guess if it is REALLY cold so the whipped cream is super firm you could do it. Or if you had the decorations on sticks so you can stick them into the cake itself, bypassing the icing for support all together it would work. Maybe there is a better way and I just don't know what it is and someone else can comment? Sorry I can't be of much help here...
Here is a link to the Tools page on my website www.caketasticcakes.com/p/tools.html?m=1 I show what tools I use and where you can buy them. If you are asking about the flower cutters I don’t think they are currently listed, but I’ll take a check the ones I use and add them when I can.
Sure are! Fondant and gum paste are very similar in taste - kinda super sweet but without a flavor normally (so it’s sweet but there’s no vanilla or anything). Main difference is gumpaste has an extra ingredient to allow it to harden. Most people don’t like the taste of either, kids tend to like them more. But both are totally edible
Nope. I actually do kinda the opposite. I will spread a thin amount of vegetable shortening on my counter to knead my gum paste on top of. Gumpaste is so much more willing to dry, I find it keeps cracking and premature drying down this way. I even use shortening when I roll out fondant rather than corn starch. I know lots of other people dust their counters, but I prefer this. I imagine if you use corn starch with gum paste, it would become stiff and tough to work. I hope this helps
Wth. I thought gum paste was some type of frosting. I'm almost furious at myself not knowing all these years making special cakes for my kids that there was another product for decorating. All of the frustration could've been avoided. How did I not hear about this product in all of the videos I've watched😮
This is really great for people looking into decorating. You definitely deserve more views
I agree! 😉

Thank so much for sharing this detailed video. I love it. I will definitely try gum paste.

Can I just mold my little gum paste decor pieces in all white, then paint them afterward?

Absolutely!

Very useful, thank you
Do the gum paste figures get soft and sweat if you seal them up in a container? That is my least favorite part of fondant.

Gum paste recipe ??
I'm sorry, I cheat. I buy pre-made gum paste
To harden your fondant when decorating add a tsp of tylose powder to 250g of fondant
I always use tylose powder in my fondant. This was a good tutorial and I’ve yet to work with gum paste, but will certainly try it.
So helpful
Thank you 😊
I-add compound chocolate in the fondant to make it hard. Or I just heat it up in the microwave and add cornstarch.
