This is one of the best youtube lessons I've ever watched, with no equivocation.

@Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard Hey Clay, thanks so much for making this video. It's EXACTLY my current challenge. I end up over-rotating and often times bending too much my left arm.
Then I end up rolling up my left arm above my pec in order to go back further. Then I end up coming down over the top in transition.
I'm working on trying to get my toe-up club on the backswing more in line with my spine angle.
Also I've been working on keeping my left arm straight, shortening my backswing and not breaking out of my posture.
It's hard to find the timing and transition.

Excellent video. Thank you so much! Can already feel the extra extension just practicing the turns in the living room!

Best video I've seen Clay on explaining the mechanics. As an older (ex) golfer who has had a hip replacement and lost flexibility you give me hope to stop my current horrible trying to break 90 and get back to the 70s - musically as well... 😊

Great video Clay! I have struggled with the "left arm straight" deal for a quite a while, and I thought it was just a matter of not being very flexible. Your video was like a light bulb going off. Can't wait to work on this!

great video and explanation. It's amazing how flexible some players are and how far back they can get that left arm. like you I can get my left hand back to my shoulder and then it's all hips and shoulders to get it back further. I liked your break down of the components...nice job!

Recently I've been trying to find a cure for my left arm bending, and this video seems to make the most sense. Can't wait to give it a try on a sim. My shoulder turn was definitely lacking!

Great video! Made such a difference to the consistency of my ball striking. One thing I'm still having trouble with is keeping my head relatively still while making the shoulder turn. My neck really wants to turn with my shoulders!

Clay! Really enjoy your teaching. One question please: What advice do you have for those of us who have a good shoulder rotation ( I actually rotate just over 100 degrees) yet my lead arm still bends way too much. What is a reason for this happening?

Holy cow I just tried this and I'm shocked at how little the left arm can travel on its own and remain straight. I see now how much of the motion is done by the turn of the shoulders / upper body. Fantastic video Clay - I wish you had put this out in the early 1970's when I started 🙂

I'm 6'6 and my arms are long so I have no problem with this. I have an early extension problem. If I take a shorter backswing, which is still pretty far, could it help with that?? Thanks

Thanks for the video. Just one question, you mention lifting you lead heel just slightly to allow more rotation - yet, in your swing on 8:11, your feet are completely planted to the ground. How come?

Before watching this video, I believed the flexibility was the reason of the bent lead arm. Your video completely trashed the belief. I realized in the backswing, I did not open up me chest. My chest faced a little bit downward. The silmilar problem happened during the follow through. Now I feel much better and will try it out on the range. Thanks.

A spectacular correction. My arm is straight but tends to bend as I go higher. My bad is I lift weights. My lats muscle prevents more body twist. Very frustrating. Can't wait to try this today. Thank you!!!!

The late PGA Tour Pro, Calvin Peete could not hold his arm straight. As the result of a Childhood tree climbing accident/injury, Calvin Peete's left-arm was permanently bent and so he was physically unable to straighten his left-arm. However, Peete is considered one of the best ball strikers in his era. Mr Peete lead the PGA Tour in driving accuracy for 10 consecutive years, hitting more than 80 percent of fairways from 1981-90. Mr. Peete also hit the ball out of bounds exactly once in 26 pro seasons. Peete’s tee shots were a lot straighter than his left arm. Peete was one of the top players of his era - he won 12 times, including the Players Championship in 1985 - despite a left arm left permanently bent by a childhood tree-climbing accident.

I understand the video, and it is comforting, but I've seen your swing with a driver and the club shift is parallel to the ground. So if your arm isn't going any farther than in this video, are you making an even fuller turn with your driver?

you use to teach the straight line release method... As a senior that is the only way I can do it. Lately, you've changed your release into a body rotational release... it's too difficult for seniors and women.

  • @freshturns_snowboarding

Hardly anyone needs a straight left elbow. I'll explain.
The reason pros keep a straight elbow is because if you look at their backswings, most of them go near or beyond horizontal with a straight elbow. If you bend your elbow at that point, you've lost control of the clubhead.
***Pros have already maximized the momentum their swing radius can provide.***
But if you're an average golfer, you don't swing to horizontal with a straight elbow. Probably nowhere close. But if you bend your elbow a bit, you'll get a lot closer to it. By bending your elbow, you're increasing your swing radius and therefore increasing momentum, torque, power, and - if you have everything else done right - distance.
There are ways to test it (throw a tennis ball like a golf follow-through) and coaches that teach it. But the beautiful part is that if you're doing everything else right, then by the time you strike the ball you can't tell the difference between a straight elbow swing and a bent elbow swing.
    Cheers

So, I watched the anti-roll video, rather as much as I could. I would like to actually learn this move but the amount of testimonials were a little overboard. Is there an actual link I could use to bypass the extended sales pitch? No disrespect intended, just take my money and give me the video lesson. Thanks.

It feels terrible keeping the arm straight and inhibits a good natural back swing so why on earth is this even a thing? I don’t get why you want this ridiculous straight arm which feels horrible
