Gonna have to order a new one. Mine was stolen out of my truck about a month ago thankfully I had not upgraded it yet and it was just the basic package.
I don't suppose that lock manufacturers have ever offered to pay you to help them design or improve their locks? They seem to believe that it is the promises on the packaging that sell their locks rather than the security they offer.
In a reflection of what just about everything has become these days, it's not what something *IS* , it's what you *CALL* it. People will believe anything these days. That's why these manufacturers don't bother making things right. It's much easier to just call it something and rake in the sales.
It's especially prevalent when you have no way to prove otherwise. A locksmith or enthusiast can play with a lock and tell you how good it really is, but how would the average person know about the lock they buy and take home? If you never had a break in, does that mean it's good? If someone smashed it open with a hammer, does that mean it's bad? The vast majority of people have no way of knowing if it's actually working well. For those kinds of products, you'd usually have a body of experts who would offer reviews and advice, but aside from some activists on social media, meaningful reviews are almost nonexistent. Compare that to how many people review computer hardware, TVs, and vacuum cleaners. It also doesn't help that, like many other products, lock manufacturers just keep cycling through product numbers. Was last year's model 1768 bad? Well this is a model 1790 that looks the same. Is it better? Worse? The same with a different label? Just keep changing model numbers faster than the reviews come out and there will never be a review ready for the product that the buyer sees on the shelf.
Spring tension on the cylinder is the most frustrating thing for me. Like a file cabinet lock, ir a badly installed deadbold that is binding up the bolt. Spent more time than i would ever imagine on a silly 5 pin file cabinet lock. Once i was able to apply pressure to lock while picking it went much smoother
The shield makes me think the ultimate lock might just be those same kind of pins, but a little face shield that only the key can push through. So the key opens the face and goes through that into the lock. That way you can't both hold the shield open _and_ fit your pick behind it. Essentially whatever you use to hold the shield open would block the entry of the pick
I’ve figured out how to make a more pick-resistant lock, and it involves a shuttered keyway that has to be held open to reveal a second shuttered keyway. You need two keys and healthy wrists but it should make standard attacks nearly impossible. Depending on keyway positioning and spring tension for the initial lock, anyway. Lots of UA-cam engineers have been trying to redesign the wheel to challenge you these days but I don’t think anyone’s thought of “just make the lock unlock a lock fivehead”
I would like to see LPL build a little set where he can put the lock on a door or latch and have to pick the lock in the position it would be in in real life use. Like, how fast could he pick if he couldn't just hold the lock upside down to tension the way he wants? Would be a good comparison of "optimal VS. realistic" pick times.
That was a good pick. Well done! You made it look super easy. But the way you were holding it made it look easier than probably would have been. If you had encountered a lock like that, attached to something, could you have actually held it in that same position? Is there a, I don't know, a posture guide, for different locks and how to pick them from common positions where you'll find them? A door lock, you could just kneel. A padlock, you can usually pull up and look at. But you were holding that disc lock upside-down. What angle would you be holding yourself if that was on a garage door or storage locker?
I agree with your summary about anything that slows someone up being a good thing. I tell clients 'There's no such thing as impermeable security. If legit people can get in, then illegit can too.' Even seemingly insignificant details, like keeping the outside of the building lit up like a christmas tree and strategically placed 'bastard trees' can slow down n'er do wells.
From experience, I agree. If it's a targeted attack, then people will take the effort to get through whatever, but if it's just a random theft, the most important thing is to be more of a pain than your neighbours. There's no point smashing car windows if some people leave their doors unlocked. You'll stop and think twice if you see a laptop or other expensive electronics out in plain sight. You're way more likely to check out a car or a shed that's dimly lit than one where you are brightly lit in an open area for everyone to see.
My most difficult lock is my cheapest. The pins and the cylinder have such rough finishes that everything is binding constantly. It's as if every pin is a serrated pin. It can even be difficult to turn the actual key sometimes! Of course, being such a cheap lock, you can also just use a hook to reach through the core and pull on the bar to the shackle, so really no reason to pick it.
Will you be doing a Best Of in different categories and an overall winner for the end of the year? I accept that there is no perfect lock but there may be locks that do well in some categories - it would be an opportunity for the channel to recognise manufacturers who are moving the industry forward, as well as pointing out the (many) areas that still need to be improved on.
I remember that too. It was an Australian lock (special crafted/modified for competition). I remember LPL said he picked it open but not on camera. And when on camera, somehow he couldn't pick it.
So if there was a key with round middle part, this shutter had a small cut that would match round middle of key, but not allow head of key to pass, user would have to have key inside and shutter closed to open lock, that would provide quite a security in itself? Shutter when hitting middle of key would have it's pin align as well, so shutter would have to be in position of key, if it was full closed or open or broken off it would no longer allow to open lock.
This is ye Lock Picking Lawyer, and what I have for you today is an offering from Everlast, designed to secure the greatest treasure in all the land...
The only question I have is how much time will it take to pick when the lock is located in a real world situation? I believe the large job site tool box will offer a better challenge for the LPL. Still enjoy the feedback the LPL shares to challenge the manufacturers to make a better product. Thanks for sharing.
Your touch or feel, of the pins is so above normal... I'd be working on this for a half hour!! How does one get your feel? Is there something you can talk about this subject? Sorta like the lishi lines things up? Was a thought. Many thanks i enjoy yalls stuff 🤘😎🔥
I'd expect to often find a grip that allows holding the shutter open with the tensioning hand. Speaking of which, any chance you'd do a video showing how much the real world movement range of a lock can do? I often padlock a piece of chain, and try to choose a length where the lock has a small range of motion. I don't want someone able to grab it, move, and rotate it too much, but I also don't want it to be too stable and free up the need to hold it.

You know it's a good video when LockPickingLawyer puts a 😂 emoji on the thumbnail
Could you please make a video on the most annoying cheap features that make lock picking tedious?
Unusual keys, strength required for turning...
Strength is one of the best. When the lock gets slightly rusty and you struggle to open it even with the right key, it is hard for picking :D
I might have to pick up another one after mine got stolen from my car when all the windows got smashed while I was at work.
I would've liked to see a 2nd go with tape and rake
Just picked up a Companion as well as a few Lishis! I just wish it had a turning tool built in without having to buy another item.
1:01 Curious what kind of normal day is for LPL and that he'd be coming across locks like this?
I don't know, but I'd like it to be like his April 1st videos!
I picked a lock for the boss today. "Rats, I don't have the key."
A long time ago you had a puzzle lock you hadn't defeated, I think it was Australian??? would love to see it done
I remember that too. It was an Australian lock (special crafted/modified for competition). I remember LPL said he picked it open but not on camera. And when on camera, somehow he couldn't pick it.
bro casually mentions a black Friday sale after destroying a lock brand's anti pick reputation
yeah and then you check the website and 99% of stuff is not in stock.
Unity huh. More like: Uknow we just copy MasterLock. 🤣
What about the lock from the channel Works by Design?
Website says SOLD OUT ... shame. Have asked for notification when back!!
1:04 why would a set of lockpicking instruments be an everyday carry? especially one that thiccc
I can imagine the LPL in ancient times, offering to pick chastity belt locks :p
"Call the royal locksmith!"
This is ye Lock Picking Lawyer, and what I have for you today is an offering from Everlast, designed to secure the greatest treasure in all the land...
When will I be able to buy a Covert Instruments well engineered padlock?
It's "anti-pick" in the same way that a typical door is "anti-intruder".
Deters 9/10 people
The only question I have is how much time will it take to pick when the lock is located in a real world situation? I believe the large job site tool box will offer a better challenge for the LPL. Still enjoy the feedback the LPL shares to challenge the manufacturers to make a better product. Thanks for sharing.
Protip for everyone: Make a tiny roll of gaffer’s tape for your everyday carry. It’s very useful in general.
Your touch or feel, of the pins is so above normal... I'd be working on this for a half hour!!
How does one get your feel?
Is there something you can talk about this subject? Otherwise, I'm really thinking a locksmith, or an assistant to one is not going be an option for you retirement job..
Be honest, I've bent half of my tools!
Never seen these you have here.
Is there conventions or seminars around the US that locksmiths have? Thanks
I bought the Genesis with the training cylinder lock, the echelon set and arbitration set, i kinda like this small compact set. May get it.
I had an idea for a set u can make, if u can MARK the lines on the picks so it lines up with the pins? I can prolly do it myself with a marker, but figured it'd help u guys out with a product idea. Sorta like the lishi lines things up? Was a thought. Many thanks i enjoy yalls stuff 🤘😎🔥
Still waiting on the Worksbydesign's pick proof lock, lock picking video!
I wonder if the shutter would be a problem in freezing Canadian winters...
It would be interesting to see you picking locks like this in situ.
Who else remembers when LPL used to do longer videos 😭
He used to take them apart and showed us how they work. 😢
Imagine if they weren't all just ads for his company now, they'd be 39 seconds long
You must not watch regularly cause he has done both in the last month 🤦
I remember when it was about locks and not about his company's products.
Now I'm curious how quickly this would rake when you would have had a piece of tape available.
