  • Across the bay from Duluth, Minnesota. This small town appears to have more going on at that early time period than one would expect of the given historical narrative. Special thanks to Jason for sending me what he found and pointing me in this direction.

Many of the buildings still exist. I took a picture of the Palace theater before it burned down about 25 years ago or so. I grew up in a small town about half hour away from Superior. There were some older ladies when I was a kid who talked about taking the train to Superior to go shopping and see movies. We had an old yellow train depot in our town that was preserved and moved next to the historical society.
My grandmother grew up in Superior during the 20’s and 30’s and said it was an exciting town back then.
Now its struggling. Lately there has been an effort to beautify the city again, and it does look much better than it did 20 years ago.
I can remember going to the Carnegie library when I was young and when it was still a library. The experience was wonderful compared to the dystopian building they moved the library into.

The spirit of St Louis movie about the world's fair has a part within the last couple minutes where the little girl (Judy Garland I think) has a rant about "how the mud came and there were dead bodies everywhere". May have seen that on Michelle's channel, not sure but it's on you tube.

Interesting you should mention Judy Garland. Her parents ( Frank and Ethel Gumm) met in Superior while they were working in theater. They apply for their marriage license at the court house here in December of 1913 (we have the application book stub in our collection) and were married in January of 1914. They moved to Grand Rapids MN where Judy was born.

Your " Holes in the Narrative " sir , may be reflected in an examination of the larger socio-economic region at the time . Duluth had reportedly more millionaires per capita than all other American cities . No doubt the fine folks of Superior were experiencing similar circumstances . Much of the wealth was associated with the timber industry . There was a lag time between the timber harvest , subsequent sawing , and the development of iron mining in northern Minnesota . Meanwhile shipbuilding was on the rise and nearby quarrying operations were busy supplying highly coveted Brownstone to Chicago and New York City . Trade in furs was significant . Money was being made !

My grandmother who is swedish has lived between Duluth and Superior for 95 years she is now in Duluth right next to the Old Duluth Senior Highschool which is now closed but is where she went to high school. there was a cannon out in from of the school fastened into the school yard she says and they eventually removed it. the school was clean extremely high quality everything inside. state of the art plumbing hot water systems, excellent heat, and stayed cool in the summer months. she is still sharp as an arrow and and can tell you everything that has happened in the Twin Ports area in her lifetime. @14:20 What's crazy is it's the same across the western realm. We've been to San Francisco, New York, Dublin, and London this year, and it's the _same_ stories and the _same_ timelines, and the _same_ fires, and the _same_ founded in and the _same_ established on and the _same_ erected on such and such story everywhere. Modest little building was built here at any given date pre-1890ish, then whatever the circumstance, there was a terrible fire from a crazy random happenstance, and they relocated the original and built this little old megalithic structure in 18 months where it's stood for 150 years.

Superior is built on wet ground as well as ravines that were filled in so you see the high board walks. It also allowed for deep snow. There was a lot of investment in Superior by wealthy people like FDR's family. Lower wages from imigrant labor as well as the port. There use to be a lot of grain elevators along the shore. There is only one left. If Superior's bid to be the only port had past through congress a few days sooner there wouldn't be one in Duluth. They got the canal built just before the bill was passed so it was dropped. Brick and stone took over because of the fire that went through Peshtigo Wi the same day as the Chicago fire. Wood was not the best building material with wood and coal burning. The Normal school was a teacher's college. It became Superior teachers college and is now UW Superior where Arnold Schwarzegger was enrolled. Superior decline matched Duluth's decline as well as the shipping on the Great Lakes. Less iron ore and taconite, wheat and other commodities traveling through. Superior was also the summer capital in 1928. Calvin Coolidge spent the summer fishing the Brule river and had a makeshift oval office set up in the former Central high school library. That was the high school that Richard I Bong finished high school. He then went to the Teachers college. He became interested in flying by seeing the airplanes fly over his home bringing the mail to Coolidge every day. He became the US's only Ace of Aces in WW2.

Superior in the beginning was laid out as large as New York City and was expected to grow as the iron and lumber and grain trades grew. It didn't happen, the railroads have basically pulled out and Superior has shrunk. The climate near the harbor and lake is very unpredictable and much colder than the surrounding area in the summer and warmer in the winter, until the lake freezes. I came to Superior from Duluth in the mid 70's to work for the railroad. As soon as I moved to Superior my job moved to Duluth. Oh well the best laid plans. Still in Superior. Most of the buildings depicted here are gone. Thanks for the video.

Have been many times in Superior for business, and my business partners always suggested to stay in Duluth as there was nothing to see, and nothing to in Superior. Has never seen interesting there indeed as Grand Opera has long gone due to what else besides of a fire. Even though it was built as fireproof. There were many beautiful schools even in mid-1950s.Today there are few, but they are just square boxes, now, sometimes on the very same places as the old ones.

Most of what you question is fact that can be backed up by primary historical documentation (newspapers and other material), and some rare photos. The story of West Superior development was due to John Hammond and the Land and River Company with investors from the east coast. For a brief time there were horse drawn street cars. These were of course much smaller than the electric ones. West Superior development started 1880, however it wasn't until the 1888-1892 era that saw the large brick "blocks" built. The financial crisis of 1893 caused the rapid growth period to come to an end. A lot of what you are thinking is early development and building with empty spaces where building are yet to be built. The one photo you refer to as a building being refurbished is an original building construction photo. As for the schools, 6 were built in 1893 due to the need at that time. To be fair the 6 school construction started in 1892 were not fully completed and occupied until 1893. The video is good but the historical narrative is poor.

The document facts with news paper articles at the time and documentation for city directories shows that 6 schools were constructed in about 18 months. Starting in 1892 and completed in 1893. All were occupied by early 1894. Wikipedia is a secondary source and I would not rely it it for historical research. I used primary documentation. There were a total of 9 schools built between 1888 and 1894. Geographically Superior is 45 square miles. One factor that contributed to building so many schools was transportation at that time. ua-cam.com/video/iF0v-ucwcMo/v-deo.html

Flat roof buildings on Lake Superior...you gotta be kidding, people would be shoveling those roofs. Were they actually built during the medieval warm periiod, circa 800 to 1200

min 12:31. Look how clean the pant-bottoms are of the men in the muddy street, and how there's no sign of tracking all that mud anywhere. And are we to believe those narrow buggy wheels are getting anywhere in all that? Wet or dry those streets would be too treacherous for those narrow wooden wheels; or many of today's rubber car tires.

This flat hollow simulated earth is starting to play like a cheap reality show. A musical-comedy reality show. With reincarnated clones playing inside-joke cameos to a Martian laugh track.
A blatantly-plagiarized murder mystery coming-of-age action adventure chick-flick historical war cartoon instructional propaganda newsreel thriller horror porno. Too many ads, and the nepotism kind of ruins it.

@0:58 I've been traveling with my wife and exploring various cities lately, and it really is amazing how boastful they were about their erections in the 19th century.

Maybe "normal" schools were for those who didn't rate the asylums.

Or for the ones who survived the floods, war, mud, and lost everything including their minds. Sometimes I think it was a place for those who kept talking about the "old world". I am a semi-local to Superior and Duluth and noticed all of these enormous schools. I think that some of them involved the military and/or trade schools/Universities. I have seen Administration Buildings at Universities (land grand U's) that look alike, government buildings, really old. My Grandfather graduated from Marquette University, another great lakes port, as a dental surgeon. And it wasn't a whites only school. At all. I don't believe these cities have always been English, and they were probably star forts.

Normal Schools where the predecessors to the current University/College system. They primarily taught teachers with 1 to 4 year programs. With the one year program you could go and teach in a rural school. The two year program was required to teach in a city school, or with after the one year program and two years experience in a rural school you could also teach in a city school. The three and four year programs were for becoming a high school teacher or an school administrator.

No holes in the narrative that I can see. There is photographic evidence as well as a wealth of written documentation at the historical society. It seems irresponsible and misleading to present a community with your narrative without having done some basic research from credible sources-of which Wikipedia is not. Our city has a rich and interesting history and I invite you to visit and see for yourself.
