I feel like many of us early Tesla owners really enjoy the camaraderie chatting with other Tesla owners at super chargers. Early on every charge stop was like a cars and coffee get together.

Yep, totally agree. My wife and I did 8000 mile cross country trip in our 2012 MS in 2014 and it was epoch to interact with other MS owners and interested folks at Supercharging stops Things have changed now but those early days were very exciting!

Same. Love a good supercharger chat. Unfortunately we had the opportunity for an hour long chat while we waited to charge in an unusual charge line recently. Wilcox AZ is in a zone of 150 KW chargers in the sparsely populated SW region of the country. Would love if if they would put some 250KW chargers at each site, just a few, at each of the 150 KW locations. At one point the line was 15 cars deep. 😱

Just for squits and giggles, I plugged in my 2016 Nissan Leaf to ABRP to see what this trip would look like. Leaf has a 30 kwh battery, but mine has 30% degradation so I have just over 20 kwh useable. The trip would take 44 charging stops, 24 hours worth of charging, and take a total of 59 hours lol. Some of those charging stops require the use of Level 2 since not enough Chademo chargers can be strung together on the route

Great video. I think you should ask Tesla to reimburse you for your entire trip. You were a commercial for them every time you stopped, and occasionally even while driving down the highway. I was wondering if your phantom braking could be caused by dirty cameras? I think your comment about being like zoo animals was your best line on the trip.

  • @scottmanley9430
    @scottmanley9430 2 місяці тому

I don't let the Tesla plan my route or charging stops. I select charging stops to ensure V3 and for amenities, i.e., food stops as needed and our preferred hotels. I have the entire trip planned before I leave home, averaging 2 hours between charge/meal/hotel stops. At hotel stops, I drop the family off at the hotel and let them get settled in as I go off to charge for the next days first leg.

We did in this video for a bit. At that tunnel it was 0mph for around 20min. In hindsight it's not that long, but at minute 10 you don't know if there's 10min or 3 hours until you move.
The nice part about an EV is it uses an extremely small amount of energy when parked depending on the conditions. Search my channel for frozen traffic jam.
But I'll say in 5+ years of ev driving I've never ran out of charge.

    • @Californ1a

Alongside EVs not really using much power when stationary, with Teslas you also tend to have quite a buffer below 0% battery. Out Of Spec recently did a video on running a bunch of EV trucks (including cybertruck) all the way until they completely died on the side of the highway, and even after hitting 0%, the cybertruck still went about 10 more miles.

Can Target just be put out of business!? I've maybe been in a Target once - and even better I wasn't the one spending any money. If I were to stop to charge and the only place at the location was a Target then I'd just wait in my vehicle.
I had to chuckle when your one lil girl said she was going to buy herself something ... with your money! 🤣
Although I've not had an EV, at least yet... Just Tesla, I'd have to say a great starter vehicle would be the 3. Small family, a 3, Y or S. A lil bigger family, Y or X. A lil bigger yet family, Cybertruck. My own personal preference has changed. I'd get the 3 as my first EV as per cost unless I could afford more. If I could afford more then it'd be the Y or the Cybertruck.
I recently thought of this question I wanted to ask you, Chris... Does the bed cover also lock when you lock the vehicle? It makes sense that it would especially because those buttons are right there.

Which is the better road tripper: The Cyber truck or the x? Also, is the Cyber truck not being a hatchback a big Miss? Is the tunnel cover worth the trade-off? And how much of it is a letdown that the Cyber truck of all the electric trucks has the smallest range and is the most expensive ?

Having to stop and charge every now and then vs driving for 3-4 hours is a much more sane way to travel. It is also less physically and mentally exhausting. Same goes for the insane compulsion to "drive straight through" for 20-24 hours vs one or more over-nights at a comfortable hotel.

Chris, how were you able to install a 12v socket in the back of your Cybertruck? I'd love to know. Thanks!

You did it like a pit stop and thats not really how people in Tesla's doing that right?

It depends on the goal. Some like to go as fast as possible and unplug the car asap. For us, we usually just plug in, do whatever we want, and then leave if the car is ready which is almost every stop. Sometimes we are forced to wait for the car for a few minutes.
