  • Following my previous video comparing Yupo paper with Photo Paper, a couple of people commented that not all photo paper reacted the same way and that they had struggled to get the photo paper to produce any acceptable results. So, I have experimented again, and here are some more tips for you.
    Please be careful using alcohol with a heat tool. Alcohol is highly flammable.

    Those look beautiful, very colourful. Like how you listed your failures too. Making that small adjustment at the beginning to the dropping technique works wonders. Doing that means you can still layer the pools of ink. Thanks Nina

    I am so GLAD that you kindly shared this unique way to actually "recycle" unwanted photos. I am so SAD that about 30 days ago I went through about 1,000 (yes - 1,000) family photos and disposed of the duplicates, the ugly, the unidentifiable, etc... So, believe it or not it is mid-January and we are having a 60 degree freaky day in Cleveland OH. Out to the trash bags where I may be able to locate all of those suddenly valuable photos! You are a gifted artist and an excellent teacher!

      Thank you so much sharing this video! I’ve not ever used my alcohol inks, as after I bought them, I found yupo paper to be beyond my budget! I just bought some ceramic tiles after watching some tutorials yesterday and now I have another option of substrates. With many old photos to choose from, I’m excited to try this technique! Just curious, how does it affect the photos themselves? Thanks again!

    Hi Nina. I've really enjoyed your alcohol ink videos, especially the ones with stencils. I have a tip to share--one I haven't seen anyone else do yet in a tutorial. I've been using tiny coffee-stirring straws to make smaller dots, and they are also extremely useful with stencils. To use them, put a bit of ink into a small holding tray and then just tap the straw tip to it and pop your finger over the other end of the straw. You can then move the straw over to and around your paper, tapping it down and releasing your finger from the tip to let out a small dot of ink, then replacing your finger and repeating the action until your little supply is used up. With this method, you are using capillary action to hold the bit of ink in the straw, and it gives you good control over the amount of ink that disperses onto the paper. With stencils I just tap the ink-filled straw against the edges of the stencil designs, to get the ink to soak up under the plastic portions of the stencil (rather than to fill the open spaces of the design). You can get a gorgeous design this way without using up loads of ink. I should mention that I do this on paper for which I've already created a background by spreading one or more light colors over the entire sheet. I let the background dry before adding the stencil layer. Getting gorgeous effects!

      +jHeather Kinser Thanks so much for this idea Heather, so timely too as I will be getting my alcohol inks out during the next couple of days, as I have been asked to do a card tutorial. I have not seen coffee stirring or very fine straws here in the UK, but I will try with the fine pipes in small spray bottles and see if that works. What a great idea, and thank you for sharing it with me!

    Hi, Nina! Rescued a ton and have been gloriously spreading alcohol inks all over them. I can't remember when I've had so much fun. Some of my photos were processed in the 60's and others were printed professionally up to the last few years. All I've tried so far take the ink beautifully. I can't find one that hasn't worked! Thank you again - this will save tons of money and take a lot of photos out of dump sites.

I have MANY which were developed years which are either blank, duplicates, or accidentally taken of no particular interest, but I never threw them away because I thought I MAY need them one day for SOME purpose. Hello from the Treasure Coast of Florida. I’ve just started watching videos on alcohol inks and very much want to try them myself. In fact if I get Christmas money, I’ll be ordering some from amazon 🙂. I'd love to learn if anyone had tried dropping alcohol inks over the FRONT of an unwanted photo. I don't remember hearing anything about why the back is preferred. I thought the effects of an extra layer of "texture" might be interesting, like we do with gel prints.

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  2 роки тому

      Hi Marilyn. The front of the photo has a coating on it which the Ink ‘sticks’ to therefore the alcohol ink won’t spread. The back of the photo resembles Yupo paper.

    These are beautiful, so festive. And what a great use for old photos, I usually toss them. In the days when people had prints made, the companies would offer doubles as a sales gimmick. What did you add to the alcohol ink to spread the base color? Blending solution or alcohol? How are you going to use these papers now? Would make good backgrounds for ATCs or postcards. Thanks for the tip about the wax too. TFS Alynda

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  8 років тому

      Yes, they are very pretty. I added alcohol to spread the base colour, but blending solution would probably work too, I don't have any. I haven't thought about how I will use them yet, but they look so lovely just as they are. They would actually make very pretty cards, so I might do that with some and perhaps frame a couple.

  • @dinabaughman8731
    @dinabaughman8731 2 роки тому

    It spread because of the blending solution not the ink

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  2 роки тому

      Hmmmm. I’m not so sure. The blending solution would have dried before the ink was added. It was just used to help spread the base colour. Ink on top of ink spreads, so I think it would have spread regardless?

      I do believe there is something called Green Cross Solution in the UAE which I think is the equivalent to our rubbing alcohol. That should work fine. Your local pharmacy or even larger supermarkets should stock it, but its also worth searching online. I hope that helps.

      Kodak premium is a fraction of the price of other brands and isnt their best quality. Its not premium quality at all. Im going to try a brand called Krisp which is fairly cheap but reviews say it is horrible for printing on because the ink takes a long time to dry. Sounds perfect for alcohol ink art!

    Some people tout yupo as the go to paper, but I've done some comparing myself, and photo paper works just as well, (although I think it's strange to use the back side, but that's what you do. ) Thx for your video. I'll stick with the better quality photo paper.
    Also, did you use the same brand of ink all the time? I find some spread faster than others

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia

      Yes, I think photo paper is just as good as Yupo. I used all Ranger inks for these, but you’re right the different brands do react differently. I love the Piñata mixativea and find them much better than the Ranger ones 💕

Also, I wonder if rubbing waxed paper over the background would get rid of the sticky as well. I saw one video where someone rubbed Thermoweb foil over the sticky areas and the foil stuck to it giving it an awesome look also. TYFS 💕

    Just wondering if you'd tried the new(ish) Jackson's Alcohol inks, Nina? They're only £3.60 for 50 ml, which s a bargain here in the UK compared to the Piñata, for example. I just hope they work as well.... This was a great product test, btw!

    Hi Nina. I use this and other techniques described by you quite a lot, especially when making cards. In South Africa we have a problem finding a variety of Ranger alcohol Inks so I mainly use Copic Marker Refill Ink. This ink tends to get a bit "sticky" if you put a lot of layers on top of each other. Is there some kind of "cover" that I can put over it to prevent this stickiness from ruining the cards? I was thinking of a varnish or fixative of some sort. The only things I can find in SA is for charcoal and pencil drawings or oil paintings. Do you know if any of these will work if sprayed over the alcohol ink? I would appreciate any suggestions you may have as I spend a lot of money on these inks and Yupo paper and the cards I make are very popular but I feet restricted by the amount of ink I can use due to this "sticky" problem and I've not been able to come up with a solution. Santa

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  6 років тому

      +Santa Roos Hi Santa. The alcohol inks can have a tendency to be sticky. I have found furniture wax to be successful, the soft kind that comes in a tub for using on top of painted furniture. I applied a thin layer with a cloth and gently buffed. This took the stickiness away and did not effect the colours. You can also use a spray sealer such as Krylon Clear Glaze. Apparently Rustoleum Engine Enamel works too. I hope that helps x

    Hi Nina, After watching most of your videos related to alcohol inks, I've now made two pictures. One where I attempted to make the layers in different colors and another where I simply dropped several colors on the kodak paper (back). My results were different than yours and some of that may be paper, but my MAIN problem both times is that the ink just pours out. Not once could I drop a small drop on the paper. Any ideas on correcting this? Thank you so much for your outstanding videos and for sharing your skills with us. Jane

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  7 років тому

      +Jane Vincent Sorry its taken me so long to reply Jane. I found that if I swiped a layer of ink mixed with IPA over the paper first, the inks spread better. If they start to spread too much, zap them your heat tool and that will stop the flow. Be careful though as they are highly flammable! I’ll be doing some more experiments in the next day or two as I’ve acquired some more photo paper that I want to to test. I’ll have another try with old photos too as will let you know my findings. Hope that helps in the mean time 😊

    • @janevincent7103
      @janevincent7103 7 років тому

      Hi Nina, thank you so much for responding. I don't think I was very clear in my description of my question. What I meant was not related to the paper or the ink spreading on the paper. I was referring to the way the ink comes out of my bottles (Tim Holtz alcohol inks). As I'm carefully tipping it over in order to let a drop emerge, I'm getting blobs of ink because it comes out too fast. The ink runs onto the entire tip, on the sides, and then pools around the bottom of the tip. Then when I open the bottle in order to use it, it's a mess. I clean the mess off with a tissue, but then when I begin to tip it over, the ink still pours out too fast and the same mess occurs. What now? (and don't feel bad if it takes a bit of time to respond, I'm not in a hurry) Thank you. Jane

    • @s.baxter3891
      @s.baxter3891 6 років тому

      Jane Vincent, I watched a Tim Holts demo where he said the bottle is designed to slowly come up to the tip to fill the hole so thee ink does not dry out while it sit open. So i open them and watch for a couple seconds as the ink rises to the tip, then hey don’t spurt or pour it so fast. You get more control.

I would however like to achieve your results. What is it that you apply with the ink before starting? Just alcohol and ink? What type of alcohol?
