  • In this video I hop into VRChat and talk with people using their native languages! The reactions were pretty funny so hope you enjoy!
    For those curious, here is how I would rank my proficiency for each language:
    English 10/10
    Japanese 9/10
    Mandarin 8/10
    Korean 5/10

      Sure 👍 it might sound super basic but I'd recommend just trying to use the language depending on your goal! For me, I focus on speaking so I just called a ton of people! There are apps like hello talk and tandem that u can use to meet language partners to call👍 or u can hop onto vrchat to practice as well! If you want to improve your reading or writing, you can try to text people in the language or read online articles :)

    As a half-Japanese person who's Japanese isn't perfect but I know enough to know what good Japanese is, and yours is really good. Nothing you're saying is really advanced (obv given the context of the convos) but your pronunciation, pitch accent, and general word choice are very good for a completely foreign learner (as in no prior knowledge before learning).

    As someone who's part Japanese, I would literally do anything if for tutorial or something from you on your process of learning these languages.
    Chinese is the hardest language here and if that only took you 10 months, Japanese and Korean must've taken you a mere month or two!
    My Japanese isn't that good since I was born and raised in a primarily english-speaking country and I regret not learning it from my family.

    • @tiger_in_translation
      @tiger_in_translation  5 місяців тому +4

      Haha yea I might make a tutorial sometime in the future! Though my Japanese is better than my Chinese! So it took more time than just a few months 😂 My biggest tip is to find a way to make language learning fun! It's totally okay if it takes a few years to get a hang of it! But so long as ur having fun, it won't feel like work and you'll keep up with it! Consistency is the most important part of language learning imo!

    I'm so curious on how do you start learning languages cause when you have at least some basic speaking skill or a little vocabulary you can try to upgrade it just by talking and learning with pals but when you start it's like a big wall that I don't know how to really surpass (I've been trying to learn Japanese for like 5 years now and I just know basic sentences :'D) also it's very amazing how do you master those accents, loved your vid so much greetings from Spain hope you are doing well

    • @tiger_in_translation
      @tiger_in_translation  5 місяців тому +3

      Yea good question! I agree I think the hardest part is in the beginning because you have no baseline for any thing 😅 then eventually there is a point later on where you have most of the essential grammar down and by then you can just cruise by talking with friends in the language 😂 for concrete advice I'd recommend learning the fundamental grammar through text books (I used Genki 1 and 2) or just look up like the jlpt grammar lists (up to jlpt 3 should be sufficient) learning short form + te forms + nominilization + のように kind of grammar was really helpful for me! Made it so I could say most of what I wanted generally 👍 and yea thanks for the comment about my accent! It's something that I think can be practiced and improved on by spending a lot of time speaking with natives! If you have more questions or want to chat more feel free to join the discord! Thanks so much for your comment! ❤️

    Hey man we're on pretty similar journeys, except Korean is my heritage language rather than Chinese. Obviously your Japanese and Chinese are awesome and I was blown away. However, try being more precise with Korean pronunciation and I think it'd greatly improve your accent (if that's what you're going for):
    - practice your vowels! sometimes you swapped them around (in the intro, I heard a slight 야러분 instead of 여러분 and 양상 instead of 영상, and 4:08 maybe 뱔로 instead of a clean 별로)
    Definitely post more language content though. I absolutely love the asian language trifecta

    I'm starting to learn Japanese, do you have any recommendations for the way you learned it? I have already bought the genki textbook and a few others, but any recommendations for ways that you learned?

    • @tiger_in_translation
      @tiger_in_translation  10 місяців тому +2

      Great question! Yea I started with genki 1 and genki 2! In terms of genki unless you plan to work at like a hotel or something you can skip the later half of genki 2(formal forms are rarely ever used) the most important part of genki 2 is definitely て forms 👍 in terms of general studying, I would highly recommend that you start speaking as soon as possible. From genki 1 you can learn the basic grammar needed for conversations e.g my ____ is _____, this is a ____, my favorite ____ is ____ etc. After learning those I'd recommend figuring out your self introduction in Japanese and then go try to speak to natives (via vrchat or another app I recommend called hello talk) and when u speak to natives take note of things u didn't know how to say but wanted to say, and after talking with people, look up how to say the things u didn't know how to say. Repeat this until fluent basically 😂 if you have more questions feel free to join my discord (in my channel info section) 👍 good luck with your studies! にほんごのべんきょうがんばってね!

      I suggest also trying out Memrise on pc, so that you have access to many, many courses for languages (there's even a course on central Alaskan Yup'ik)

      I started with pimsleur audio tapes, then text books (Genki 1 and 2 for Japanese, Hsk 1 and 2 for Chinese) I also challange myself not to spend money on learning Korean so I used free grammar websites! Then after learning the grammar I tried speaking with natives! I used hello talk and vrchat for chatting with natives and anki for flashcards cards! (I would NOT recommend duo lingo if you want to be fluent. Even pimsleur is just to get ur foot in the door, you can skip it if your want since it just teaches phrases and not the underlying grammar) but yea Goodluck on ur language learning endeavor! I believe you an do it! 💪

      Hi! I'd recommend learning the fundamental grammars for the language! I went through this list of grammar until I felt that I was no longer limited by my grammar so much as my vocabulary knowledge! www.google.com/amp/s/www.howtostudykorean.com/other-stuff/lesson-list/%3famp
      Hope this helps and good luck with your studies! ^^

    hello brother, i understand it is loaded, but i had a question. what do you think the best language is to learn first trying to get into the polyglot world? you are inspiring!

    • @tiger_in_translation
      @tiger_in_translation  9 місяців тому +1

      Ah I'd recommend studying whatever language interests you most! If you're interested in the language it'll be much easier to study in the long term 👍 assuming all things are equal, then I'd consider learning families of languages? So like spanish French Italian or Japanese Chinese Korean? If u study languages that are similar it'll be easier to learn than a bunch of unrelated ones. Also if ur goal is just to learn a bunch of languages fast, I'd learn ones similar to your native language since those should be quicker to learn 👍But I think it's best to prioritize your interests if you have them! Thanks for watching and for your kind comment! Glad I could inspire you!

    how do i break the language barrier? im trying to get good enough to watch youtube videos but i cant understand a thing and i feel like i end up learning nothing

    • @tiger_in_translation
      @tiger_in_translation  6 місяців тому

      Depends on how you define language barrier! If you mean listening compression, I would make sure you understand the fundamental grammar structures of the language(look up jlpt grammar lists!) and try to increase your vocab (jlpt word lists!) and also just keep watching/listening to a ton of stuff in your target language! Don't be discouraged! It takes a lot of time to improve and it won't happen instantly, but don't give up and you *will* get there!
