  • More How To - Protecting Vintage Book - Dustwrappers - In Mylar Archival Wrap!
    In this video I show you how I protect Some more of my hardback book dustwrappers with a high quality plastic wrap. The wrap really makes the jackets pop and they just look fantastic on the shelf as well as serving a valuable purpose.
    I've chosen a few tasty first editions as examples to assist me, including firsts of Nerve and The Sport of Queens by Dick Francis, an early hardback from Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea and a scarce 1930's anthology, A Second Century Of Humour.
    It's an awkward process and was really tricky to film but I think I just about managed to pull it off! I hope you find it useful!

    I've been doing this to my first edition dust wrappers but never seen the clear archival wrap before. Thanks for the tip and the link. Always good to see an artist at work🙂

    Not sure if you were aware Jules, but at certain points with the subtitles/captions on the mic picks up the crinkling of the Mylar as applause, which is both pleasing and appropriate! 👏

      I was not aware, how mad it that! I've been a bit slack lately and need to do another of these. I have a few books that need protecting.👍

    Thank you for another great video. I currently bag my Doctor Who Target books. But will now consider my annuals and other larger books.

    If this is a project you find yourself doing frequently you might consider purchasing a self healing cutting mat and an xacto knife. One more consideration could be a paper folding tool - a lot of origami artists use a them to achieve a really crisp creases. It may be a bit over the top but you strike as someone who truly cares about these objects as more than mere books.

      It's a good thought Barry. I might look into it🙂 I don't have a ton of hardback books but what I've got if like to keep protected and looking good!

    @jules you need to do an extended version of this >1 hour. This is so relaxing and I think I have about 250 of the views on this video! I almost know line for line what you say! I think I need therapy!! 🙂

    Thanks for the informative video. Have you tried Brodart 'Just a Fold' covers which have a white acid free backing to them? I found them to be great at protecting dust jackets myself and easy to apply. I certainly recommend cover for DJs of larger books which in my experience tend to be the ones which get damaged more easily.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  Рік тому +1

      I have used the Brodart ones but find the age and yellow over time whilst these seem to keep as new indefinitely 👍

    Jules - Inspired by your video, I am going to take on the project of putting mylar dust wrappers on my wife’s Agatha Christie Collins Crime Club 1st editions. Is 2 mil thickness the way to go? After a quick search online it looks like I can get Brodart mylar here in Canada. Thanks in advance for your advice on the thickness to buy.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Peter, 2mm is fine. We'll worth doing to those Christie's 👍🙂

      Jules - The Mylar wrapping of the Agatha Christie first editions has been a roaring success. Thank you for the inspiration. The jackets pop under the Mylar 👍 I have ordered facsimile dust jackets for the three that didn’t have any dj. Once those arrive and get wrapped my wife’s collection will look smashing!

    Amazing video, thank you so much for this! What is the thickness of the mylar roll, 2 mil? In testing I feel you don't want the mylar too thin or too thick, what's the sweet spot?
    Also do you use this product for covering new books as well or do you use the paper backing mylar? Thank you!

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, 2mm thick and you can indeed use this on new books for extra protection.

      @@JulesBurt Lots of collectors use the paper backing 1.5 mil protectors, although I typically don't get great results with these, and maybe I'm just doing it wrong. I've used the 1.5mil no paper backing rolls but after watching the video it seems like the 2 mil is a bit stronger.
