    Adam is great!!!! I stumbled into an antiquarian bookshop in Riva Del Garda, Italy about 8 months ago. It was like stepping into the magical world of Harry Potter. I so badly wanted to enter the world of antique book collection but was super intimidated. Luckily the shop owner in Italy talked with me for over an hour about his collection and then I discovered these videos. Thank you Mr. Weinberger for your willingness to share this fun hobby with others. You are another awesome person sharing what you know for the benefit of us all. It is greatly appreciated.

      Hi Adam, just found your video, and listening to you spend so much time talking about those rare books is something what I’ve been looking for, you are a very good speaker and I’m glad you mentioned you don’t have to have high bank balance to get into rare book business, just talk about the books is great to here, I would love to do that thanks for the inspiration, I think I’ve found my calling xx please do more videos xx❤️👍

    When I think of the rare (and interesting) books business, I think of the impact 'The Ninth Gate' had on (a younger) me. I can see the power those rare books have on you. You have to pull yourself out of their world, just to finish a sentence. They offer a magical world.

    I’m so glad that you have a UA-cam channel!! I have a small collection, constantly looking for new additions. My prized possession is a beautiful copy of Dickens’s “All The Year Round”, and recently acquired a 1714 copy of “The State of Political Affairs in Great Britain”. Looking forward to watching your videos and gaining some knowledge!

    I just discovered your UA-cam videos tonight and wanted to let you know that they are very helpful to guys like me who love antiquarian books and dabble with buy/sell, to fund my collecting. Because of variations , especially in bindings , it can get very tricky knowing what you actually have. Lol. - so thanks again

      @@RareBookBuyer I actually going to do that tomorrow. I have a 1880 book , Refutation of Darwinism , by T Warren O’Neill, nothing special I think , except the book name plate says -Major General Winfield S Hancock, who Wikipedia tells me was a union general at Gettysburg among other things . The second book is Tennyson’s ‘idylls of the King’, 1859 , Edward Moxon & Co. , the interesting thing about this is that it appears to be a gift and it inscribed to a person and signed ‘ from Lady John Scott Niddrie , 1861, when I look her up I see she was a Scottish poet and composer who is famous for putting Douglas’ poem Annie Laurie” to tune. I’ve had the book a few years and while I’ve seen similar , I haven’t run across this particular binding/ cover. If it’s ok , I will email you pictures in the AM and get your opinions on them ? - thanks

    Thank you. This has been great information. I was beginning to put together a used cookbook site after being given a discarded collection. After researching I've started to see how much inventory I would need to move on a regular basis to be profitable and as it's just me that seems daunting. And while this does too, it seems daunting but I have enough hours in the day to physical make it happen.

      Something to be said for sailing into twilight. Seriously though that is not a metaphor for the profession - there are a lot of young dealers getting in, greater diversity of people and material, barriers to entry to digital fairs etc are lower than ever. And if is always fun. One just has to be creative in the approach to the business

    hey adam i have been enjoying your videos. i started gaining an interest in rare books as i built my easton press and folio society collections. i know they are not rare but so nice and ive been buying cheap collections such as lakeside press and blacks readers service. is there a better place to get wholesale older books and sets. my sister wants me to curate a nice little library for her new house. not going to make money but alot of fun.

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  4 роки тому +1

      In terms of wholesale eBay in the antiquarian book section and some and some auction houses like Doyles in NY or PBA auctions in CA or even LiveAuctioneers online. Albeit a word of caution as the online book world can be more or a Wild West than the Wild West and it is good to compare prices in ViaLibri.net for retail comparison. And of course reputable dealers often have good buys. The Getman virtual fairs are really fun as well and there is one coming up Jan 6 if you Google online

    I always wanted to buy and sell rare books. Unfortunately I've managed the buy part... but once I get a rare book in my possession, I simply can't part with it! I fall in love with it, and it ends up in my own bookcases. Ah, the woes of being a bibliophile 🤣

    • @RareBookBuyer

      That is a dilemma I face but I am consoled by a dealer by nature being able to handle lots more books than a collector. Alas we are all only temporary custodians

    Great interesting video, l asked a fellow bibliophile is it rare..?
    A rare book is one l can't find..
    & when I do l can't afford it 🤔

    Hi Adam. And Happy New Year. I have just found your channel. I love your videos.
    I live in Europe and I have a collection of over 150 Bible leaves in over 20 languages, mostly 15th-, 16th- and 17th-century, with some 18th and 19th-century, too. Many of my leaves are rare and valuable. An expert has told me that my whole collection, now, is worth around 20K dollars. I would be grateful if you could give me your opinion about the following issues:
    1: I have read in various articles that the value of rare Bibles may appreciate by 15% to 25% per year. Is this true for rare Bible leaves, too?
    2: If one day I decide to sell or put my whole collection out for auction, what would be the best way to do it?
    Thank you in advance and thanks again for your videos! And Happy New Year!

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  4 роки тому +2

      This is a hard question to answer with such general information. Some of the rarest and most important books might have gone up 15-25% a year the past decade but the effects of compounding mean that is likely unsustainable. Other books have declined in value the past 10 years. So I can’t offer financial investment advice with respect to collecting. Leaves rather than books are an especially tricky part of the market and I generally don’t deal in them unfortunately. Occasionally I see incunable leaf collections at auction etc but can’t remember ever seeing a Bible leaf Collection. The trade generally cautions against viewing books in terms of strict investments given their uniqueness, complexity and liquidity. As for myself if I wanted to feed the mind and soul, I’d buy books. If I wanted to feed the pocket instead I’d probably buy Bitcoin ;)
