- In today's alternate history scenario we ask what if the 1820 liberal revolutions in Porto and Lisbon spilled over and caused a political crisis in Portugal-and what if, as a result, Brazil under Dom Pedro I gained a colonial empire? This video goes hand in hand with our analysis of the regions of Brazil on the Monsieur Z channel! If you haven't already checked out the main channel, please consider doing so!

i think that could've happened? throughout brazil's history there were many separatist movements, and there still are, but they are mostly a viewed as a joke
7:17 This painting is not from brazilian independence, but from brazilian proclamation of the republice, where the republican forces killed slaves that have been freed at the monarchy (sorry if I have a bad english)
Oh, the republicans are so bad, its not like the monarchy kept slavery for almost 100 years
It *was* a war of independence, in the same proportion and violence as Bolívar's campaigns. It took 2 years to liberate all the occupied provinces. We had no fleets whatsoever, and barely had an army - yet, the Empire was able to amass and send more than 27k soldiers during this time, against 18k Portuguese troops. Salvador, the second main city in the country, was under martial law since 1821, and almost the entire North of the country was under governments loyal to Lisbon, as well the Cisplatina. The Portuguese troops in the Rio de Janeiro actually retreated to Salvador, where the bloodiest battles took place, until the surrender of General Madeira de Melo, on July 2, 1823.
Yep I agree. Brazil won't change because its situation hasn't changed. The Brazilian Empire was screwed to begin with due to Brazil just being practically a bigger dixie state with no Northern States (I.E. Slavery brought its Doom). And that fact that its Emperor grew more and more distant also brought its doom.
Having colonies would have it being worst due to it needing to support its colonies. No matter how much extraction happens between the two.
As a Brazilian Monarchist, I weep. Is the Brazilian Monarchy surviving into the 20th and 21st centuries but a dream? (At least the Republican Flag looks better than the one we have now.)
I wish to know what major changes have been brought to Brazil by this change in history. Maybe I am ignorant, but aside from minor territorial changes, I don't see much has changed from OTL. (Aside from slave imports from Angola becoming domestic trade, not international trade.)
Pedro I abdicates > Pedro II reigns as a CHAD emperor > Slavery gets abolished > Aristocrats revolts > Pedro II abdicates > Brazil becomes a Republic.
Will the liberated slaves and the growing mestizo population migrate to Angola and contribute to Angola remaining Brazilian? Maybe as a state instead of a colony?
Will Brazil gain some German territorial possessions in Namibia during the peace conference in Versailles?
I look forward to watching part 2 next week. (And have my questions answered, if possible.)
This. Looks like they control Uruguay and maybe expand Angola and that's about it?

There are 2 spanish slips in this video 🙂🤌🏼
26:06 The term "mestizo" is not a thing in Brazil. It's a hispanic term, generally referring to people of mixed european and indigenous ancestry. The equivalent in Portuguese would "Caboclo". The population in growth you mentioned, mixed between europeans and subsaharans, would be "Mulato". Both terms are not very used anymore.
The various mixed combinations, which before carried singular names, now are not practical to be tracked and have been compiled as "pardo" or "mestiço". That's what our mixed population is called and what mixed people in Angola would be called in this scenario.
20:59 The 2nd spanish slip was "Rio Grande del Sur", instead of "Rio Grande do Sul".
Preposterous 😂 Jk good vid. Looking forward to the next part 👍🏼
My apologies. For some of the pronunciations I looked them up, but for others I attempted without any knowledge of Portuguese, so I used a Colombian accent. Hopefully Brazil will forgive me 😂🇧🇷🇺🇸🇨🇴

You know, this was really cool I've always wondered what would happen if Brazil became a colonial empire. Plus this video was really well done. What do you think would happen if the scramble of Africa caused a war.
Awesome!
Just as a curiosity, during the independence negotiations, Portugal demanded that Brazil give up any rights or claims to colonies in Africa (specifically Angola, and some fortifications in what would now be Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe and Guinea).
So this scenario in the video was in fact a very real and plausible possibility.
My country. I am polaco de Curitiba.
I think this is actually a scenario up to the point of the abolishment of the monarchy that might have allowed the monarchy to continue as part of the main issue was the lack of compensation for the abolishment of slavery, as well as the lack of incorporation of the existing landowner elites into growing new industries. Brazil would be both better placed and I feel likely even to naturally support and draw the existing landowner elite into Brazils industrialization creating a mix of different landowner classes instead of one unified bloc which would provide additional issues of an abolishment of the monarchy. Furthermore, a more successful, prosperous, expansive, and generally stronger Brazil would also be significantly more attractive to immigration creating additional interest groups that even further complicate any potential bloodless elimination of the monarchy due to the further division of economic and political power and weakening of the concentration of power in the pre-existing landowner elite.
Frankly speaking I dont think this will change much be it leading up to WW1 or even after WW1 not already outlined in this scenario although it might have some effects on WW2 and post WW2 especially as any successive monarchs after Pedro might be influenced by the strong growth of late interwar and WW2 ideologies.
Love it
