    • @chrspate8431

He had good spikes with him on the ice but he had JUST said he was in 4 inches of water biggest danger to him there was himself. He shouldn't have even lost his ice fishing pole there. Get your footing, reach down, grab your shit and walk out. Now if he was out in the middle that would have been a lot worse situation. Moral of the story, PAY ATTENTION the what is going on around you, know when you are that shallow, know what to do, don't panic, and like him have your safety gear with you and ON you properly.

THE ICE IS NEVER SAFE. PERIOD. You have to be aware of changes that happen when you’re fishing. Water on top of the ice is always a bad sign. Honey coming patterns in the ice are again, a bad sign. This is why I HATE seeing all these youtubers (I love your videos Nick, but you are guilty of this too), putting “sketchy ice” or “unsafe ice” in ice fishing titles. All that does is teach uneducated fisherman and women and god forbid kids that watch these videos that this is ok. It has become the norm on UA-cam. It needs to stop. Thank you for sharing this. You make great content Nick and I hope this serves as a wake up call to the UA-cam fishing community. Every year people die ice fishing and it’s because they are uneducated or aren’t paying attention to their surroundings. Be safe everyone. No fish is worth your life!

I appreciate the mindset behind "no ice is safe ice" but I have to be honest, I feel pretty safe standing on three ft of black ice. To fall through that, I feel I'd have to walk over someone's sight fishing hole that's only partially frozen

Good on you for having the presence of mind to use your ice picks. As a member of an ice water rescue team with my local fire department, I like to think I know a little about the subject. The first few seconds are crucial when someone falls through the ice. The cold shock factor makes everyone, and I mean everyone take a large gasp of air. (We’ve trained a lot of very big, very tough guys the thought it wouldn’t happen to them). That gasp usually involves sucking in a dangerous amount of water. But after you’re in the water, if you can keep yourself calm, your chances for survival go up exponentially. I’ll say it again, good for you for having your wits about you and using the tools you had.

Very glad you weren't hurt. Thank you for being willing to show this to the public; a real man is willing to admit when he's messed up, and this can help show people some signs of bad ice.
You can see at the end that that the ice was a good 3-4 inches thick, but it had decayed due to repeated freeze/melt cycles. I'm willing to bet that it never made a peep as far as cracking sounds go since it was so flexible and porous. The only real sign you had was water pooling above your hole, particularly water getting deeper and deeper with time.

Glad you weren't far from shore. I learned about ice in Alaska, when it's really cold ice is as strong as steel. When it warms up it turns into big crystals barely held together, that's how kung fu masters break big stacks of ice blocks. They put them on a sunny beach and fiddle around with them for hours so the ice is about 30 F and barely holds its own weight, then they break the stack.

You should take into consideration that snow ice (white or milky ice) is not as strong as clear ice. While four inches of ice will be fine in most cases, always be aware that the ice may be weaker than you think. Watch for signs that the ice is weakening such as groaning and cracking.
