  • SUBWAY TRAIN ‘KIDNAPPED:’ Think your commute was bad today? Back in October 1984, a subway conductor was accused of “kidnapping” passengers on a train and holding them hostage for 2 ½ hours. Passengers said the subway conductor said “you [expletive] [expletive], aren’t going anywhere. now you’re going for a ride!” The TA said passengers were told to get off the train and refused, and they got nasty back -- and should have been arrested! Check out our vintage report and let us know the WORST thing that’s happened to you on the subway.

When conductors made announcement in those days, it sounded like garbage, like literally, the PA systems were screwed up that passengers were like “what did he say?”. This was before the overhaul program was initiated by MTA in the 80s. Now today, trains are more computerized than usual, mostly bugs can mess up the system but can simply get repaired and back on the rails in a few hours.

I left NYC in '86 for the military and went back for a visit in 2020. I prefer the old style with the conductor announcing the next station "Next stop 34th Street, change here for the jxwurhdnfkfidkdkjfg and the thkcleorlkg trains" you better had known where you were going already LOL

Not really. They’re not demand any money for the release of the hostages (though they won’t be worth that much), nor are they uncoupling cars in the middle of the subway tunnel (new cars can’t operate in single units), nor are they overriding the throttle (which I think may be impossible).

They make laws to protect them they need make wlaws protecting passengers as well. This is a century old problem across the u.s.

It is the train riders that are the trouble makers, they do this because they know that a Transit worker ain't going to do nothing to them or they will loose their job . And it's not fair to Transit workers that we have to take this abuse from any transit rider . Transit workers should have a gun to protect ourselves. Transit workers have to make a living too and we should not come to work and be assaulted by unsatisfied passengers that just don't like the MTA . Why should we die for their mental issues and their hatred that they have for the MTA . There problem is with the boss of the MTA not us workers , we are just workers making a buck to put food on our plates and to care for our family. Why you riders want to kill us , why ? ? ? !
