      the fines for littering are a fucking joke.
      And the crimes are just horrifying, with CCTV that dont work or are of extremely poor quality, it take police 25 minutes if that to respond to an emergency,
      UNLESS its their own cops in trouble. If its a cop thats in trouble , it will take then 2 minutes to get there. if its public, it will take 30 to 45 minutes.
      and yet MTA makes 1 Billion dollars a month from all of its 24 million passengers a month that uses the system
      And we have a broken system that uses 19th century equipment. While other countries are already using MAGLIFT RAILS for their system
      And have high tech CCTV and massive police presence. BUT YET - NYC as always , behind a few centuries because they want to keep their 1 billion a month for their pockets.
      While NY'kers pay more and more for the fare and getting fucked at the same time.
      Our city should be extremely high tech and Hi security.

      JayY_FelixX Well, their will be 4 new metro north stations in the Bronx ahead of time, and 1/3 of stations is 33 will be renovations. One of them is here in Brooklyn on the R local train. Visit MTA website for more details.

      you should see brooklyn, like holy shit, the amounts of garbage and green fungus and mildew , graffiti and broken stairs not to mention the overall aesthetics of the stations look like complete shit.
      And many stations no space on platforms, which is scary AF to stand on when you have a train coming at you at 50 mph while hugging a beam so someone doesnt push you onto the tracks.
      People coughing in your face in the train, picking their noses and sneezing into their hands then they touch the railing.
      Then the smell, like holy shit the smells of the stations makes you just want to hurl a few times before making it to work at 8 am......
      No wonder people are grouchy when they get to their job..... they have to put up with the bullshit of MTA system at 8-am.

      Gregory Francis Circumstances have changed since the rest of the system has built. Environmental regulations, traffic impacts, new federal regulations, etc.

      When the system was built it was built by private companies. In comes the government, and it takes them years to build two miles of a line.

      That’s big corrupted government for ya, here in WV we have been building an expressway for 40 years and have only gone about 15 miles only 10 miles of it has been paved and considered finish but there is nowhere to go on it. We put 50 million of the states’ budget on finishing at least phase 1 of the project but somehow the money disappeared the same will probably happen with this project, we have a joke that anytime a Democrat gets their hands on running a project all the money goes away and they mysteriously have 2 brand new million dollar homes in Florida and California

      KnucklesV2 Which is true. If ever the SAS is ever extended to the bronx there are only a few areas that are not served by subway. Anything on the east side of the bruckner past hunts point, throngs neck, and importantly co-op city.

      TransitShawn44 The T train is phase 3. When that is done, service will go from 125th Street to Houston Street. T service will eventually go to Hanover Sq.

      It actually went down during tunneling. So they'll rise but to "normal" levels which seems expensive if you moved in during tunneling.

    I can't believe so many people are complaining about New York's subway, the most extensive in the nation, when most of us don't have a subway at all. Boo hoo your line doesn't have brand new trains or brand new stations. At least you still have it, the stations and trains still get you where you're going. If you don't like your subway many of us would gladly take it.

    I rode the first revenue train northbound that New Year's day and explored all of the stations then in December 2017 I rode the Holiday Train up Second Avenue: the oldest surviving cars on the newest line. :)

    Heres some Information about the 2nd Avenue
    The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway finally opened on 1/1/2017. After some previews for press and invited guests, including a New Year's Eve party, the first three stations, at 96th Street, 86th Street, and 72nd Street opened for service at 12:00 noon on New Year's Day. Lots of press coverage is available online; the New York Times covered the opening and the first business day's operations. Thanks to Aahd Tahar for updating our route map.

Its route: Norwood 205th street, Bedford park blvd, kingsbridge road, Fordham road, tremont avenue, 170th street, 167th street, 155th street, 145th street, 125th street, 7 Avenue, 47 50th streets rockerfeller center, 42nd street Bryant park, 34th street herald square, west 4th street Washington square, broadway Lafayette street, grand street, Atlantic Avenue Barclays center, 36th street, 9th Avenue, fort Hamilton parkway, 50 street, 55 street, 62nd street, 71st street, 79th street, 18th Avenue, 20th avenue, bay parkway, 25th Avenue, bay 50th street, Coney Island Stilwell Avenue, Models: r68 r160. These are also the models of the local d train. New models for the g line: r46 r160

    They should extend the IRT Subway lines down to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn

      Any extension of the IRT subway would be impractical due to the Rogers Avenue Junction, which is a bottleneck for the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains. To resolve this, you can install two new switches just east of the where the Nostrand Avenue line splits off and you can have local trains to the Nostrand Avenue Line and the express trains to Utica Avenue and New Lots Avenue. More specifically:
      (2) (3) to Flatbush Avenue
      (4) to New Lots, stopping at Nostrand Avenue and Kingston Avenue.
      (5) to Utica Avenue (does not stop at Nostrand Avenue and Kingston Avenue).
      That way, you can have subway extensions without further compromising reliability of the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains.

    So the MTA Built almost every other subway line between 1904 and 1850 but it takes them 1/4th of the time to built 4 Stations? Wow.

      Things have changed since then. Back then, it was like “Let’s build it here. It looks cool”. Now you have to deal with NIMBYs, community concerns, and other issues. You can no longer bulldoze through developed neighborhoods.

      @Double B Utica and many other corridors have been built up, especially on the northern end of the corridor. You can’t bulldoze through nightly developed neighborhoods anymore without some compensation. This isn’t China with their poor human rights conditions.
      Some businesses will not even be willing to part with their property. I live by the southern end of the line and while it is light-industrial and commercial, many property owners are unwilling to give up their property that they have owned for years. 2021 is NOT 1901. Times have changed since then.

      @Double B Eminent domain is a last resort tactic. Only if all options are exhausted.
      Also, an environmental study is needed since the construction is going on near homes and noise is going to be a big factor as well. The Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 study resulted in some Station entrance locations being relocated to prevent impacts.
      I hope you are not advocating for construction projects to be rushed. Environmental studies are MANDATORY.

      @Double B The recent subway stations aren’t that deep. It’s more like the perfect depth for the surrounding area, and it’s convenient too. Hell even the stations in Washington Heights are deeper than the Second Avenue Subway stations or Hudson Yards, yet I don’t see you complaining about it.
      The depth of the station is actually a non-factor when it comes to station ridership. The Second Avenue Subway stops were tunnel bored, and they lie a considerable distance underground, yet it’s been a very busy line since it opened (72nd Street is the busiest of the three new stops). It’s proof that you can tunnel bore a station similar to Second Avenue Subway and it will still be successful.
      Going back to Utica, there will be situations where elevated stations will be needed, but that does not mean huh can use eminent domain and bypass the environmental impacts studies. They MUST be done to determine mitigation impacts, possible locations of station entrances and ancillary equipment, etc, all while taking community considerations into impact.

      @Double B The SAS had taken a lot of ridership off the Lexington Avenue due to convenience of a one seat ride into Brooklyn, despite the depth of the stations. In fact, 86th Street on the Lex saw the largest drop in ridership going from 132,000 in 2016 to 94,750 in 2017, construction method of station a non-factor.
      The ride on SAS is also quicker than Lexington Avenue, entering and leaving the station also taken into consideration. As a result, service has been increased. In fact, I feel that all the new subways should be tunnel bored if possible.

    Late response, but with the several comments on behalf of the several delays, they commented earlier in the introduction that it was delayed due to both the stock market crashing and the fact world war 2 broke out, on top of the Korean war as well, and the subway repairs delayed it even further, and then the economy just went to shit around the 70's. After that then basically things went forward but at the slowest pace possible. So, truthfully, just a lot of unfortunate and (from their perspective) inevitable delays. Ya, sure "my city could do that same thing within two years", first good luck, second, ok boomer.

    While I applaud this achievement, I can't help think what might have been if the MTA took lessons from London, England's Jubilee Line Extension and involved world-class architects to design the Second Avenue Subway stations.
    Sadly, the subway stations are conventional and unimpressive in their appearance and construction. Shame.

      This line took 4.5 billion to just build 3 stops. Are New Yorkers going to sit there and look at art. No we are not going to look at it. We just want to get to place to place faster with more opportunities. With out all of this art we would have the line extended to at least 125th street and a plan for it to go into the bronx.

    Hold on what about all the great sunbelt cities though? L.A Atlanta Miami Phoenix Dallas Houston Nashville etc. we're are pretty great and few of us have subway lines. Just wide wide freeways so I don't see your argument

      William Erazo You still need that large station to accommodate the huge crowds. Remember: the system was not designed for the New York of today. The subway was designed for a different NY, when it had less people.

    Phase 2 unlike what many think is much easier to do then this project 3:04 most of what they built in the 70's shown mentioned in this video was from northern Manhattan and there just waiting to be used. As of today track is laid to about as far as 105st on second av used right now as yard tracks ending at the foot of were the 106 station would be and tunnel not laid with track yet as far as about 120th St. Phase 2 can be done in faster time as there main focus would be stations and they would focus all there work on to the leg between 120th and 125 and like 5th is what the plan is right now.

      JustRant This is part of a line New Yorkers have waited a century for. It really has become a big deal because once these three stops opened, the nearby Lexington Avenue Line saw a decrease in crowding. Those 4, 5, and 6 trains now have more room to take in more passengers.

      More like a train from brooklyn to queens, they don't have to deal with water and that'll save so many peoples time instead of taking 2 hours to get from brooklyn to queens

    They didn't have to make the train station that wide or that long. It's a waste of money. They could had just made it simple so they can add more stations.
    Nobody really goes to a train station just to look at it. People walk by, take trains and go.
    People come back and they walk out. No need to make all those stations with best things

      Matty Iannielli Thats not true. Only one station related to SAS, Grand Street, opened in 1968. That station currently serves 6th Avenue express trains, but will also serve Second Avenue Local T trains.

      JeremiahC99 I was just kidding. Construction initially began in the 1970’s but was halted due to cost overruns but resumed in 2006. The Second Avenue Subway Phase 1 opened on January 1st, 2017. The Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 construction will begin in Summer 2020 and will open by 2026.

      Matty Iannielli 2026 does seem a bit optimistic, given what happened with Phase 1. Hopefully no more delays.
      However, the only delay needed is for phase 3. That section needs to be rethought entirely. It needs to be 4 tracks from 63rd Street to about 38th Street, with 55th Street and 42nd Street being 4 track, 2 Island platform express stops. At that point, the outer tracks merge with the inner tracks, with provisions for future express tracks. 34th Street, 23rd Street, and 14th Street be built as planned, but when the express tracks are built, they will be bypassed. The planned layup tracks will be modified so that they run from 16th Street to about Rivington Street. Houston Street will be built as an express station, but the outer layup tracks would be sealed off to protect layup trains from being tagged. South of Houston, the tracks could tie in to the existing Chrystie Street tracks to the Manhattan Bridge, digging only under the northern end of the Sara Roosevelt Park. The 6th Avenue express could then be rerouted to use the Williamsburg Bridge, allowing for increased 6th Avenue local service to Brooklyn.
      However, new capacity in Brooklyn, Queens, and somewhat the Bronx would be needed to make all of this work. So to prepare for this, at 63rd Street, where the outer and inner tracks merge, there would be future provisions for a new tunnel to Queens. 55th Street would also see new provisions for a new Madison Avenue Line to the Bronx.
      New local stations can also be built at 49th Street, 29th Street, and St. Marks. 14th Street would then be converted to an express stations (the station will be built with provisions to do so).

      pacboy Actually, I forgot to mention (and I keep doing it somehow) is that what I’m not planning is 4 tracks from the get-go. Rather, what I forgot to add is that the line should be built with two tracks, but with provisions for another two tracks that can be built later at a cheaper cost.

      Jorge Figueroa That’s Phase 3. Ideally it should be modified for 4-tracks and connections to the 53rd and 60th Street Tunnels. That way, additional lines other than the T can be run.
