After already loving & admiring him through his albums, I had the great pleasure to meet this treasure in person at a Chabad house near U Mass. There I was persuaded to spend some time being hosted by a very lovely Lubavitch family in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. They were so nice & pure, and 19th century. I could never be like that, but it was an experience i cherished. It was another wonderful gift from Mr. Bikel.
This was recorded at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and originally telecast on November 9, 1963. Bikel appeared several times on "HOOTENANNY" during its brief season and a half run.
Well, songs like this and performers like Bikel and Collins were part of my mother's legacy. Bikel was a good man and a conscientious objector to some of Israel's less than good policies!
A renassiance man if ever there was one. I saw him perform at the very same temple where I had my Bar Mitzvah. A national treasure.
I remember him doing a role on the naked city TV show
