'Abusey Junction' is a ballad written by guitarist Oscar Jerome (fast making a name as an artist in his own right). It was written on the roof of a compound in Gambia where the band spent time last year immersing themselves in the soundscapes of the region.
It's taken from We Out Here, the new album that serves as primer on London’s bright-burning young jazz scene. A set of nine newly-recorded tracks, We Out Here captures a moment where genre markers matter less than raw, focused energy. Surveying the album’s running order, it could easily serve as a name-checking exercise for some of London’s most-tipped and hardworking bands of the past couple of years.

This tune is something out of this universe.
Everyone says how emotionally beautiful that guitar, which it exactly is, but those vibrating keys, simple bits of percussion and that grooving bassline make the song so much more powerful. Plus those gorgeous harmonies make the tune haunting and tragic, they're amazing how they switch between vocal and horn these women. It's like a tune at the end of a depressing film or TV series. Thank you KOKOROKO and Brownswood Recordings for keeping the Jazz scene alive 🖤

Heard this years ago thanks to a local texas jazz station. Immediately ordered and internationally shipped every existing kokoroko and oscar Jerome vinyl that existed which was only 4 at that time. Probably around 2018-2019? Eirher way this group (especially with oscar included) is easily some of the most talented people in music to date.
