    Alignment makes a world of difference. I had a 2002 Acura rsx, got into a ice accident where it hit and jumped a curb. The collision place “fixed” my car but didn’t do the alignment of the suspension. After a couple years and a couple of noticeable unevenly worn tires, I went to a actual alignment/tire garage. They told me and showed me that all four wheels were literally pointing/off in 4 different planes. Which was why I felt like the car was spinning in a circle every time I cross a icy metal grooved bridge.

    I find that using a scissors jack like found in most cars to change a tire (you can get them cheap at a wrecking yard or pick & pull) works great with a bump steer gauge because you can move it up or down easily. I welded a 3/4” nut to the jack so I can use my cordless power drill and a 3/4” socket to move the jack quickly. Love seeing you do some of the alignment yourself. Get a couple of pieces of plywood cut to 12” x 24” and you can do your toe measurement yourself. Lean the boards up against the side of the tire, one on each side of the car. Using two tape measures compare the distance between the fronts of the boards and the rears of the boards, at ground level, that number is your toe in or out depending on which measurement is larger or smaller. Keep up the great work!

    ❤❤❤Wow your MrDos suspension videos have been amazing! I have performed all of the above on my Volvo AWD wagon... it is indeed, a lot of work to make geometry correction for lowered car. Almost wish i left it alone, lol. I did go as far as making my own 4-wheel alignment machine using high-precision line lasers and Tenhulzen camber-caster tools.

    • @andrewawf9889
      @andrewawf9889 4 роки тому +1

      I was thinking along those lines with building my own alignment machine set up until a machinist friend handed me a stock car magazine showing how to do a string alignment using simple tools.
      After reading the article long ago, a roll of string, tape measure and a camber caster gauge will do the alignment on just about anything with 4 wheels. Most racing teams still do alignments this way and the accuracy is all dependent on how consistent you are in measuring from the same location each time you check say toe on the front and back of the tire.
      I was skeptical of the "antiquated low tech" method but after verifying the alignment on my 64 Bel Air was 1/4 degree or less difference via a laser alignment machine at a shop, I was sold on the string method as being a viable solution far less expensive. Being consistent in points of measurement is where getting the same readings comes into play when using the string method.
      Your car should handle far better than stock with all the work you put into correcting the geometry. I came across a Volvo wagon around the late 70s while at a light in Ocean City MD that was lowered with a LS V8 conversion. Total sleeper that would haul the groceries, family and some. 😁

    • @LordTominator
      @LordTominator 4 роки тому

      @@andrewawf9889 Strings do work well, but i found they get in the way, or bumped out of alignment. Plus i had to be fancy I guess :-)

    FYI, finding an alignment shop willing to align a non stock vehicle might be tough as most will not align it or may align it but the results may not be what you desire.
    I have 2" dropped spindles on my 64 Bel Air that are designed to keep the same geometry as the stock ones but still have the upgrade of disc brakes. Most alignment shops are looking to get the vehicle in and out quickly with minimal work in adjustment due to the alignment fee charged. If the vehicle is in the "green zone", it doesn't get adjusted and the margin for that zone is wide which may still result in previous wandering or pull etc that was present prior to getting the alignment.
    I bought a Longacre camber caster bubble gauge years ago to do my own alignment as the "close enough" for most vehicles wasn't close enough for what I prefer. I also encountered most alignment machines not having the capability to go back that many years in their catalog of specs to do the alignment.
    So my suggestion would be to pick up a Longacre or equivalent camber caster magnetic hub mount gauge which will pay for itself with the cost of 2 to 3 alignments.
    Longacre also makes toe plates that utilize two tape measures to check the toe or using the string method which I use as it has been reliable and accurate. The other plus side is that you can align anything you own from that point forward including your sand rail, utv or Subaru as it's another valuable tool in your arsenal.
    While the thought of doing an alignment may sound intimidating, it is relatively straightforward and a useful skill as knowing how to buff paint once you learn the principles of camber, caster, cross caster, toe and bump steer.

  • @Patrick94GSR
    @Patrick94GSR 4 роки тому

    The reason why the spring had to come off is due to suspension motion ratios. Meaning when the tire is on the car and weight is on the suspension, the tire is farther out from the control arm inner bolt (fulcrum) than the place where the bottle jack was lifting the LCA. Lifting the LCA closer to the fulcrum effectively makes the spring rate higher, which is why the car comes off the quick jacks or jack stands before you get to normal ride height. That's also why with coilover suspension, adjusting the spring perch up or down changes the ride height of the car more than the distance the spring perch changed.
