    Great job trouble shooting a symptom that took us four trips to the dealer to resolve on our brand new 2019 VW e-Golf. (2 diagnostic trips, 2 repair appointments) It's not just 30 year old cars with these issues. Automotive techs with good electrical trouble shooting skills are difficult to come by. (I was schooled in troubleshooting by an electronics technician who spent 33yrs working for Pratt & Whitney, AKA: Dad). Troubleshooting is a priceless skill!!

    Well done Sarah diagnosing the ground issue. Way to take us thru the process in logical steps. Truth on 30 yr old cars being a pain sometimes. Just got my 87 928 S4 running 3 wks ago, but with quarantining feels like 2 mo.

    Back when I had a MR-2, I had the t-tops off, windows down,and went so fast, the inserts in the quarter windows blew out at the same time! Fun car, but had its own special set of issues. Also had an RX-7 before that with a 12k redline that screamed! Rotary fun. Seeing this MR-2 being enjoyed makes me miss mine. Nice ride, but with intermittent issues.

    Always a good idea to tug the wire from pin making sure it won't easily break. I usually take a long nose pliers, pinch and add tension to the female pin. And lastly spray both male and female pins with Caig DeOxit contact cleaner for added assurance. Yes many of us over analyze when trouble shooting, but hopefully learn from our mistakes. Good job.

    Very common when you have multiple electrical problems at the same time to suspect a bad ground.

    • @dozer1642
      @dozer1642 4 роки тому +5

      It takes a few times of chasing crazy stupid electrical problems to settle down and realize it’s probably a ground issue. We always want to chase power leads and assume the ground is just the ground.
      Kind of like chasing old school “carburetor” problems that are actually ignition problems.

    • @Garbox80
      @Garbox80 4 роки тому

      Yep. A good rule of thumb is to always check the ground first. It's usually an easy one to check too, so makes sense in meny ways.

  • @GeoffSeeley
    @GeoffSeeley 4 роки тому

    Sarah, this was a known TSB recall by Toyota. The bare ground splice in the door is corroded by moisture and it works it's way into the connector where you found it. Unfortunately, as the door is opened and closed it eventually breaks more and more wire strands and you start getting weirdness until it all stops working. You'll need to replace the entire wire in the loom eventually.

    Don't worry, it's not just old JDM cars that cause electrical grief. I have so many times "fixed" something on my XJS, then have had to come back to it again because an old terminal was corroded and my previous troubleshooting just disturbed things long enough to clean the contacts for a while.
    Now I just stick a tiny wire wheel or burr into the sockets using the Dremel and don't stop till it's shiny metal.
    Also, on a Toyota related topic, put white lithium grease on any socket you clean and reassemble, keeps the corrosion at bay for years (as pioneered by Toyota during factory assembly more recently). I buy white lithium grease in a spray can, very convenient.
