I spent a year in college as a studio recording major and learned a lot during that time. I wouldn't call my self an audiophile, but I'm an audio-aficionado for certain. One thing I learned while studying music recording, was that many of the highest end music studios had both a pair a set of very expensive high end studio monitors as well as a set of Yamaha NS-10's. The NS-10's are easy to spot in studios because of the white speakers. They are quite shite as studio monitors go. Why then, would high end studios have them if they perform so poorly? Because the vast majority of people don't have audiophile level setups in their cars, homes, and headphones. So the NS-10's get used as a reference point to make sure music mixes sound good on what most people will be listening to them on, which are low end car or home speakers. In your video, you've described a similar effect. Your NTH-100's give you a better representation of the kinds of speakers through which most people will be hearing your videos. This works for you since it gives you a better work flow, saving you time and frustration. An alternative to using the NTH-100's would be to still use the M50s plus your sound card's EQ to mimic real world speaker setups, like TVS and Phones, by dropping out some of the high and low frequencies. This way, you could flip off the EQ for a better experience when you go to listen to music or watch a movie and flip it back on when you are editing. Having said that, at the end of the day - your setup is a matter of preference and you should do what works best for you. As for me, I'll be hanging on to my M50s. Replacement ear cups can be found for as cheap as 12.99 on Amazon. Cheers!

Weirdly, owning ATH- M30, 40, and 50x's, STILL my go-to headphones are the M30's with cheap replacement memory foam earcups 🤷‍♂️

Stumbling on your review of the NTH-100 was a good thing to do for me. I'm looking for a new pair of headphones and these popped up on my Facebook feed. However, I'm not a music/content creator, and your review just made me realize that it would have been a bad buy for me since I'm mostly gaming and a little bit of music (but not much). Thanks for the accurate review!

3:33 yes, I was going to say pro headphones have flat frequency response. To represent the audio exactly how it should sound. No coloration. The loudness is most likely caused by the uncoloured frequency response. Thus there is no audible boost on LF and HF ranges. (I've changed my responce, after looking at the specs.)

Sennheisers have been my go to for audio work for the last 20+ years. Before that it was the Sony MDR-V6s.

Wow! I just subscribed because of the practical approach to audio, etc. and I am so excited that Rode put out an ACCURATE pair of headphones!

Interesting, the hot and sweatiness of most over the ear headphones is my number one complaint so I might have to pick up a pair of these.

It's crazy how cool they stay! Even after a two hour stream my ears would be moist when using the M50X headphones. It would be cool if Rode added an option in their software to add a boost to their headphones that you can toggle on/off for gaming/music. Maybe that's not possible and is equivilant to wanting to "download a bigger hard drive" 😂

I had the M50X some years ago, they were great...but would hurt me a lot in the ear / eyeglasses stem, I had to sell the after like 6 months. I've been with the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO ever since and never thought I would change them...but this, this look so good! 😍🔥

The thing about swapping headphones is having to get used to the new pair. Give it a few days and you still hate it, you may have to return it.

3:20 I've been using Audio-Technica headphones for over 27 years for audio aplications (DAW, mixing, "mastering") and the M50X still has the flatter response (hz) of the market "on budget". Then we need to talk about Sennheiser for "high end headphones" but, that's another story. M50x is actually the nearest headphone to deliver an "ideal response" in terms of flat hz response.

Hello hello. You have seen the frequency response graph of M50x?! They are anything but "flat". Gosh. You really don't know what you are talking about.

I cut my teeth with AT headphones. M40 and m50. Used them for years and years. I wouldn't recommend them so enthusiastically. Good for monitoring speaking and editing speaking. But not professional grade for any eq, mixing or mastering.

Got DT770 and what can I say...
M50 for movies with such enhanced bass
Dt770 for music production with crisp details.
      No need more headphones :))

They just aren't close to flat though, even on budget (flat is also not the right term for it, but that's besides the point). Things like the K361/371 to even the airpod pros are much more nuetral than the m50s.

The M50X is collapsible and a bit less price than the RØDE however they are made in China and I don't fancy replacing stuff on them such as the cushions. The RØDE is made here in Australia and is fully modular. I wonder if/when is RØDE going to make a version with a built in boom mice for podcasters? Hmmm...

    • @RafiGish

The pads on the M50x are easily replaceable and since the M50/M50x have been on the market for ages easily obtainable. You can easily get different size cables for the M50x, etc. The Rode NTH-100 is on the market since march 2022 with just one very long cable and a clickmechanism which makes it not possible to swap cables with some after market cable which doesn't exist at this point in time (3rd of April 2022). No local stores offer the 1.2m cable, I currently only could buy that from the Rode webstore, which ships from Australia, considering shipping, import taxes and administration getting this from a non EU webshop isn't really something to consider. I do have the cable in backorder via a local music store which is probably gonna take months to get here. I wouldn't call the Rode headphone modular when you can't even get a short cable in a fashionable timeframe for a decent price, unless you live in Australia. Most folks watching YT live outside of Australia...

I've never understood the whole 'neutral is best for production' thing.. I EQ my speakers/headphones to sound best with my reference tracks then mix my material to whatever I think sounds best. This way it sounds the same as music I enjoy 🙃💡
..in the past I've mixed on 'neutral' gear and my mixes come out muddy sounding on other systems because I've added too much bass on the neutral system to make it sound good 😅 as long as your equipment roughly matches the harman target it should be fine.. a lot of speakers and headphones don't do well below 50Hz or have strange bumps in their frequency response so really require EQ 👍 ...the Rode NTH-100 for that matter has a fairly odd frequency response and is certainly NOT neutral! Neither is the Ath M50x..! 😅 the AKG K371 is tuned fairly close to Harman target but I'd still recommend using EQ to what YOU think sounds good and going from there. 🤝

I feel the same. In fact I hate it if we get a visitor in the studio and they listen to playbacks in there through the monitors. THAT'S not the way I want the music to sound.
Nothing gets called 'finished' until it passes the 'how does it sound in my car?' test. 😊

The Rode NTH 100 sound pretty good, but they poorly built. Mine broke 3 days after I received them. I did a bit of reserch and lots of ppl are having problems with the clips, they keep breaking

    • @goodbyepolarbears172

I've read that too but I don't know how they are doing it. Maybe they are constantly adjusting them? I set mine to fit me and haven't needed to adjust them again. I've used them pretty much at least once every day for a year and often check those clips to see what I'm missing but there's no sign of wear at all.
They'll probably go and break now I've said that! 😮

    Don’t buy these headphones.

@@clickbaitcrill3394 Exactly!! I use studio monitors all the time. Much less fatiguing and neutral. I'm searching neutral headphones specially closed ones. Didn't really found a closed back which is neutral. Sennheiser HD 560s, HD 600 and ATH R70x (Warmer) measures well but all of them are open backs HD 600 are pretty expensive which also needs more power to drive them. R70x is cheaper but needs even more power than HD 600. HD 560s is ideal midrange choice but I also want closed back. I have DT 990 Pro but I never use them without EQ, these are to occasionally check my mixes and I don't really like them besides gaming. Seems like there is no perfect closed back which measures neutral.
