I bought these rode nth 100 as my first professional headphones and I gotta say, this is the best in the market. I wear it for 8+ hours of long sessions and they are so comfortable. I can hear even minor imperfections clearly which even my clients can’t hear. No matter how loud the voiceover is, your ears won’t be affected. Totally love it ! I just wish there was a hard case cover with it tho. Had to buy aftermarket 10$ one.

I bought these when they first come out, and I've given them more than their fair chance, and they have come up short for me. I got my first pair, loved the audio quality, loved everything about them, but within 2 months there was a piece of plastic near the earbuds that failed, and rendered them useless. Rode's customer service is top notch, as I went through them, and had another pair fairly quickly, no fuss no muss...fast-forward three months later second pair broke, same issue. I promise I'm not hard on these things, but I am a professional voice artist, and I do use them a lot.
I got a third pair, same issue....4th pair and this time customer service mentions "oh yes, we know about the issue, we have fixed it and you will be getting the newest version where that won't happen anymore"...and I sit here with yet another crack in the same exact place (held on by a screw at least this time, but still wobbly as heck and I have another piece of electrical tape around them again). At least this time it's been over 6 months, but still, same fail point. I'm not going to bother with customer service again because they've already gone above and beyond and after 2 years I'm tired of the back and forth with them. I'm going to move on (I have a lot of other headphones, but I was so excited about these ones! But now I get to research new ones, and that's fun too I guess). Anyways, I do not recommend these for headphones, but Rode is a top notch company as far as working with them, so that was nice at least (and I do still love the microphones I have from them...though I primarily use my Shure 🤭)

I just listened to the miked sound demo and I think people need to be careful with the hype marketing. I like the headphones, I want one, but I know I need to manage my expectation if I'm actually gonna buy it. Here are several negative things I heard in the sound demo. If any of you have already tried it I hope you can reply in the comment and tell me if these things are true or not in the real world. (1) It doesn't have enough high frequency, sounds a bit dull, even for a headphones that's designed to be flat sounding. Also even when boosted with EQ, it doesn't really translate sparkly kind of high frequencies well (maybe about 5K - 7K Hz). (2) The low has a noticeable roll off maybe at 50 or 60 Hz, so it doesn't show sub bass very well. (3) The transient is not fast enough to show percussion hits accurately. Could be ok enough for voice, but wont be ideal for music production.

    • @volksbahn
      @volksbahn 2 роки тому +1

Mine arrived day before from Sweetwater. I confirm your points 1 and 2 fully. They absolutely do not sound flat and are uncomfortably dull, hovering on the margin of sounding colored; just wanted to be candid and honest. Now, I say this with hesitation after reading Mike’s response to another comment; he cautions about this dull aspect and wants us to retrain the ear especially if shifting from Sonys. I am guilty of my resting aural tuning with the MDR-V6 which are discontinued. But again, my other reference is the 7506. I was trying these for recording and mixing singing vocals.
Here’s the tough part. I know these are unusable for my work, yet I want to keep them for the comfort. These are built fabulously and are one of the most comfortable phones in my experience. I hope this helps.

To me it seems clear that Rode is targeting the 770 Pro’s with these cans so I was a little disappointed that other, far cheaper headphones were mentioned and used in this video but not the most likely competitor. Are these cans worth upgrading to over the 770 pros or are the 770 Pro’s still king of comfort and performance (for the price)?
Still, very informative video, thanks Mike :)

I’ve been looking into a good pair of headphones for getting the job of audio engineering and podcasting, and for the price point and features that this pair has, this may be the ones i’ll go with. Thanks for doing such an in-depth review. These are certainly high-quality headphones. Your comment about the Sony 7506's having a hyped high-end is something I've heard before, and for my hearing (I don't hear the high frequencies as well), they are actually the better choice for me during post-production, so I'll keep using them. However, the Rode headphones may be a better choice for monitoring out in the field to eliminate the "live" sound to better hear what's being recorded.

This is a really great source for everything related to vocal recording and equipment as well as superb professional advice. I love how I don't feel like I'm talked down to here. I HATE being a noob but I guess we all have to start somewhere and at sometime. I do have a question that I just know will solicit lots of laughs from the pros around here but I'm confused about something in regards to delivering the end product to the customer. In the event that I provide some voice over tracks for a customer maybe in Fiverr or really anywhere....what is the standard format? Mono track or Stereo? I mean I have now seen many YTubers showing their recordings at 24bit Mono. Is that right? Is this more about coming down to what the customer asks for more than anything else? So with an XLR, I guess its standard to record in mono and then convert to stereo in the software editor before adding any additional effects or edits? I'm a bit confused. Thanks.

I found that even with expensive open back mixing headphones, many of them has noticeable roll off below 50 or 40 Hz.

Harman curve isn’t about adjusting the FR to sound better. Its trying to make headphones sound like flat speakers since the shape of human ears change the FR when the sound reaches the eardrums. So the FR of a neutral sounding headphones is a lot different from neutral speakers. A headphones with FR adhering to the Harman Curve should sound quite neutral and accurate.

The 7506's have their place. If you go with the Rode's (or practically any other headphones) expect them to sound duller by comparison because the Sony's are extra bright. Let your ears adjust before you judge.

Great review, but kinda missing a point, so would you mix on these, you´ve said yes, but did you actually mix like a voice over on these and compared to like your studio headphones or monitors you use these? I know that mixing on headphones is not recommended, but I still ask if it´s possible. Also I miss a frequency response chart on Rode´s website, would be a great to see how they are made and what are their capabilities. Would be great if they will be flat, but if they are not boosted in lows, mids or highs and sound natural, that could be great. I would love to get these in future to get a mixing on voice as I cannot put studio monitors in my setup right now.

Great Review! thank you! I was wondering if you could help me with a decision: my shure srh 840 broke after 12 years (yes, it had a lot of creaking issues) and now I need to buy new ones. After seeing some reviews, including this one and an old one of yours about headphones for voice overs, I am between the Sennheiser HD 300 pro and the Rode NTH 100 (both recommended by you). Which one would you choose? I would be using them for recording vocals and voice overs, and for mixing when not using the main monitors. Also, my head is not that big so good clamping and no creaking would be best. Thanks so much! :)

Thanks for your excellent review. I’m a location sound recordist and I’m wondering how much rubbing noise you get in the headphones when the cable gets rubbed. These microphonic cable rubbing noises make me crazy, and varies from make to make. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s a cable rubbing problem, or a noise in the program sound. I am seriously thinking about getting a set of these Rode cans, but the non-folding aspect is problematic for me. My line of work can be very rough on equipment. I presently use Beyerdynamic DT250s in the field, and while exceptionally robust, don’t fold up either. I just deal with it.

Thx for the review. What about the Rode compared to the Sony MDR-7506 Headphones, especially when in the field w/ lots of external noise?

    Great review.
I'm in the market for a new pair of over-ear wired cans and I own AKG K550 for over 9 yrs. Since I saw you have K550 or 553, how Rode compares to AKGs in terms of audio quality and frequency response. I really liked K550 sound profile and now I want a suitable replacement. I'm also considering Bayerdynamic DT700 Pro X but are they 2x better as they are 2x more expensive?
    Thank you.

Thank you. I loved the recording/mixing features focus of this review Mike. Especially the replaceable band pad. My ball head gets a lil fuzz now and again and just rips through the pad in a few months. Had to wrap my ATH M50s in bicycle tape

I'm hopeful that the Alcantara will hold up for a long time, but the fact that it's replaceable is fantastic.

hello mike. you got my attention, with that Rode NTH headphone. can I ask, what was the make/brand of the headphone you used, to explain heat coming from it on to your hand?

Some really great design decisions from Rode. May have finally a replacement for by beloved DT770 pros.

Have you tried them? I’m stuck in between these and DT770 pro and can’t decide 😢

@@Itslegitman I’ve got both. The rodes are better for long session usage. Fit over the ears better, are cooler and being able to change side of the cable is useful. I feel the dt770s are the clearer sounding though and the better for critical listening.

Hi Mike... Yet another outstanding review! One question... when you switch the headphone cable from side to the other... is it wired internally so that the proper right/left stereo relationship is maintained? Thanks

The left to right is maintained.

Nice video Mike, well done and very detailed as always. As someone who is looking to potentially get into voiceover work, does anyone here have any tips for getting started? Any info is welcome.

Fellow booth junkie here. I love the content. Thank you, Sir. I am interested in dabbling in voice-over for fun, and a bit of side income. Where would you recommend going to find work? Is Fiverr the go-to? Thanks in advance.

I don't understand locking cables. If it yanks, I want it to come out, not take the headphones with it.

It looks like they bleed more than they should for a voiceover purpose. I think you don't want to have any bleedings into your recording, right?

I'm Suprised they weren't £600 and only £150 and thats the first professional grade headphones I have seen that isn't overly expensive but these "sound" compelling to buy.
