- In this edition of East Idaho Newsmakers, Nate Eaton talks with the legendary Michael McLean.
McLean has written and produced 30 albums over the decades and is known for his annual Christmas production of The Forgotten Carols. He has also written a Broadway musical, is a motivational speaker and produced hundreds of films and commercials for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Several years ago, McLean’s son, Jeff, told his family he was gay. McLean says that began a “faith crisis” where he began to question everything he believed and had shared with millions around the world.
During their conversation, McLean tells Eaton what happened during that period of time, how Jeff helped him through and provides words of encouragement for others in difficult moments.
They also discuss The Forgotten Carols and what’s next for the performer.

This is a great interview with insight into one of the most talented song writers I have ever heard. Michael McLean composes such touching music. He's so under-appreciated by the world! Thank you for uploading this interview. It's pure gold.
Michael McClean, Thank you for sharing some of the sensitive and difficult trials in your life. I’ve seen you now on several “ Come Follow Me” you tube channels. You are an inspiration. Keep talking, keep writing, keep singing.
I too feel like heaven has kept silent my whole life and Micheal's words are encouraging and I am grateful I happened across this interview. I have more often been able to look backwards and see God's hand then I have ever in the moment. I love God so much! My heart is warmed by the love he has given me.
incredibly powerful, just what i needed to hear tonight. thank you Mr. McLean for making me laugh & cry. you are a great artist, incredible
This week has been incredibly challenging for me, filled with darkness and hardship. Yet, your interview brought a glimmer of hope. Your willingness to share your journey, to be vulnerable and open about your struggles, resonated deeply with me. I am a convert to the church, and during the four years I was trapped in a home filled with darkness, your music became my lifeline. It was the first church music I ever heard, introduced to me by a friend during a hospital stay filled with pain and loneliness. Your songs, along with those of Janice Kapp Perry and the books of Brother Weyland, filled my mind during times of utter hopelessness. Despite the darkness in my life, these resources helped me endure the darkest years of my life. Your struggle is my struggle, and I want you to know that you are not alone. Thank you for not giving up, for sharing your journey, your pain, and for being vulnerable with us. Your connection means more than words can express.
I heard a term recently called "breaking the 4th wall" recently where an actor will look at the camera (us, the audience). Michael did this several times and it made me feel like I was part of the conversation, it felt really personal.
Michael McClean is so unbelievably brilliant. “Will He Ever Come” is my favorite song on the planet. I wish apple wasn’t full of cowards so I could buy it on iTunes.
I love this guy a lot. He helped me during my mission and after it.
I wouldn’t have made it through my teen years had Michael McLean’s music not been there for God to speak to me through it.
This is so cool! I'm not Mormon anymore. But, I will always love Michael McLean. Many years ago I was blessed to see The Forgotten Carols when I was married. Thank you for such wonderful music and memories.
Michael, why can’t we get your greatest hits on a streaming platform?
I love Michael
The words you write are amazing!!!!!
Faith and following Christ is for all of us.
Kudos to Nate the interviewer. I guess McLean waxes on
There is an unintended, frightening idea that for some it could take nine years of spiritual drought before they feel the Holy Ghost. Dim and grim! Our scriptures and hymns have so many promises to those who will just _ask_ him. "Oh how praying rests the weary, prayer can change the night to day," "Oh may my soul commune with thee and find thy holy peace," "When your heart was full of sorrow, did you think to pray?"
A bunch of twaddle... read more, pray more, work harder, and then you will be worthy... utter twaddle.
@@praestant8 Sorry, not sure what you’re referring to - the video or my comment? Thank you 😊
@@Glen.Danielsen I'm referring to both.
Amen
12:50 - Faith Crisis
🤗
Haha
And Michael forced himself to keep the mormon commitment because it made him who and what he is. It's really quite tragic.
