It literally should have been up for legit academy awards! They managed to perfectly blend spoof and homage in a way I have never seen done. Plenty of raunchy, sometimes funny full on spoofs out there but this is different in the best possible way! Chef's kiss

When Gwen asks the Thermians about Gilligan's Island and they respond with "Those poor people..." *I DIED.* And then on the flip-side, who would have thought that having Doctor Lazarus say the "By Grapthar's Hammer" line - with feeling - for the first time, would actually put a lump in your throat? There are so many quotable lines from this. And interestingly, many Star Trek fans put this near the top of their favorite Star Trek movie lists, even though it's not a Star Trek movie.

Enrico Colantoni seriously gives one of the most underrated performance ever: He has to
    1) Give exposition
    2) Be the front man for an alien race whose goofiness drives the plot
    3) Be the anchor for most emotional scene.
The scene where he says how they've discovered lies "at some great cost" in a way that's funny but hints at something darker is one of the great tonal balances I've ever seen an actor do.

    • @sinsgalore5146

Fun fact, the way the aliens talk and move is all based on his audition, he used a vocal exercise in which you hit all octaves. Casting and the director when on to show the other actors playing the aliens how the cadance was suppose to go

Still to this day my favorite line from this movie is "Lets get out of here before one of those things kills Guy"
This was Missi Pyle's first movie, one of the things she remembers is that Alan Rickman would eat lunch with the rest of the cast rather than eat alone in his trailer like most big actors.
Sigourney Weaver wore a blonde wig and fake bust, and from what I read she would leave the set wearing them when she could. She also said she started to think like a blonde by the end of the movie. (I think this interview was from the extras on the dvd)
    Patrick Stewart on Galaxy Quest
"I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant.
No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

Hey Daniel and Sam, another aspect of the move is Alan Rickman’s character realizing how much his character and his performance impacted those around him. --- It's one of the highlights of the movie, it really impacts when he says the line he hates the most. ---- He does it with the most feeling he's ever done, that really hits home.

Rewatching this one is great. This is rated one of the best Star Trek films ever made, even though it is not technically Trek. Daniel, you should see Sam Rockwell in the film "Moon" (2009). Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) auditioned for the part with most of the alien quirks (don't think he was responsible for the untranslated Thermian language).- the walk, the clap, the laugh - that's all his doing. The other alien acttors and extras had "alien school" every morning so they'd fit in.

Galaxy Quest has absolutely everything, amazing cast, great story, it's hilarious without "making fun" of the subject and somehow at the same time deeply emotional - a real gem.
If you want to see Sigourney Weaver in yet another role that's again completely different and with Alan Rickman again I would recommend - Snowcake. The role was written with Alan Rickman in mind and it was him to recommend and later bring on board Sigourney - a role I would never-ever could have imagined her and man, was he right. The two mostly cary the whole movie and they crush it. It's not a well known movie and a low budget production but it's great.

During a scene in which they are standing on the transporter pads, with beaming effects to be added later, they suddenly find themselves in the transporter room of the real Enterprise, in the future, in space.

It's funny how shocked you were by the PG rating because this movie was going to be somewhat grittier and darker. For example, the crash landing was originally going to kill a lot of spectators at the convention, but people would still think it was part of the "show". Another example was in the hallway of crushers, Sigourney Weaver's original line was going to be "Well FUCK that!" because they were aiming for a PG-13 rating, but then they had her ADR her line, and she apparently tried to do a very bad take on purpose to highlight the change. This movie is really funny, but knowing the story behind "Well, s-cu-rue thaaaaat!" makes that particular scene even funnier.

Knowing what is being spoofed adds layers to the nostalgia value in this respect - from show to bloopers to behind the scenes trivia.

I'd say Galaxy Quest and Tremors are two masterpieces of their genres. Impeccably written with a fun and game cast, both deserve all the praise and cult followings they have. Fav lines, "Whoever wrote this episode should die!" (Galaxy Quest), and "Damn it, listen to me. I'm older and wiser." "Yeah, well you're half right..." (Tremors) 😆

An absolute classic! Only slightly ruined for me ever since learning how insanely right wing conservative nut job Tim Allen is, but… I’m able to overlook it enough to still enjoy this movie lol

Check out Stephen King's Salem's Lot (1979) A CBS TV two part TV movie from early Nov 1979. With the late David Soul aka Hutch of the Starsky & Hutch buddy cop tv series. He also was a motorcycle cop in Magnum Force/ Dirty Harry II.

You mentioned how good Sarris' costume was. This movie's special effects are from the famed Stan Winston Studio known for such movies as A.I., Aliens, Avatar, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands (1990), Invaders from Mars, Iron Man, Jurassic Park series, Pearl Harbor, Predator series, The Terminator series, The Thing (1982), The Time Machine (2002), and War of the Worlds (2005). The ship Protector bridge was even designed to shake making it much more realistic than shaking the camera effects.

Being a Star Trek fan isnt necessary to enjoy this film, but Trekkies will get the parallels as well as the parodies that some non-Trekkies will miss. Fun fact, in the Protector's hull number, NTE-3120, the "NTE" stands for "Not The Enterprise"

When Tim Allen is laying out the plan to get the Barrilium(sp?) Sphere, he actually says Fleegman instead of Guy. It's really quick. I don't know why he does that when the movie pays off the Guy-not-having-a-last-name joke at the end. Kind of an odd choice.

Can you imagine how much MONEY Disney would be rolling in right now, if they'd treated their fans the way the Galaxy Quest makers treated the Trekkies?
THIS is the way you make movies for a fan base!

I hate to be on the Rickman bandwagon, but many actors could not have sold the character of Dr. Lazarus so well; his utter disdain and hatred of his strapline - "By Grabthar's hammer" - turned into a heartfelt delivery to soothe a dying alien, it's extreme talent.
Just a quick compliment - I love your reactions, guys. Keep it up.
Don't forget 'Tech Sergeant Chen' - played by 'Fred Kwan' - is played by a white actor. Just something else that adds to the film's enjoyment for me.

About Guy, Sam Rockwell's character. I don't know if you noticed that at the end, everybody got shot, except him! So his fear was not justified, I mean his fear of being an expendable side character who would get killed off first. :-)

Of course, you should do several on that comedy poll, notably Tropic Thunder. Risky Business isn’t really a comedy. I’d add Parenthood to the list. Wayne’s World is a must if you remember the SNL skits.

This movie was so well crafted it stands up in it's own all the SFX is decent and it's just a lovely positive film that is basically star trek (pre 2005)
