    I grew up watching reruns of Star Trek since the mid 1970s when I was about 5 years old. Been a massive fan ever since and yeah- I'm "that guy" dressed as Admiral Kirk (from Star Trek II) going to conventions since the early 90s.
    "Galaxy Quest" was by far the best love letter to us, the fans. It covered all the bases and while it pointed out how quirky the fandom can be, it didn't treat us to punch down jokes. Saw it in the theatre in 1999. It was fantastic! I consider it the unsung Trek film.
    Quellek's death can still bring a tear to my eye to this day! Brilliantly acted by Alan Rickman and Patrick Breen. A sci-fi comedy that can make you cry- how great is that?! And Sam Rockwell stole every scene he was in!
    Trivia- There was an old (fake) fan website of the (fictional) 1980s Galaxy Quest "show within the movie" that was a spoof of early MSN Groups pages or Geocities websites with (terrible) graphics, episode guides, and fake interviews of the cast resembling the fan pages of the early 2000s.

    This is the greatest Star Trek movie ever made...that was not a Star Trek movie!
    There is a story that Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard on ST:TNG) refused to see the film, fearing it would demean 'Star Trek' and be disrespectful to the cast and fans of the show. Then his castmatte Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. Will Riker on ST:TNG) told him it was amazing, like a love letter to Trek and the fandom...Stewart saw it and loved it! Most of the sci-fi community of actors (not just for 'Star Trek' but other franchises) are universal in their praise and love of the film.
    And to think...the impetus for the story came from a real-life incident at a con, when William Shatner (Captain Kirk from the original 'Star Trek') was in the bathroom and he overheard a couple of jerks mouth off about him, like what happens in the movie to Jason.

    One of the few perfect movies in existence, it never fails to lighten my mood seeing it. Alan Rickman had issues working alongside the other actors, particularly Tim Allen, because in his view, they didn’t take the work as seriously, even though it was a comedy. The others did manage to lighten him up a bit, ironically similar to the experience Patrick Stewart had on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and all of them became friendly with one another by the end of production. However, during the scene where Tim Allen has to admit that he lied, he got so focused on the emotional content of the scene that he nearly broke down crying. Rickman’s joking comment was, “Oh my god, I think he just experienced acting.”

    • @hkpew
      @hkpew 2 роки тому +11

      I could be wrong, but I think that they extent to which Rickman had a problem with the other actors, and especially Tim Allen, is greatly overblown. I think the perception of that stems from a combination of two things - Rickman's sense of humor, which often tended towards funny but seemingly cutting remarks which he didn't seriously intend, and the fact that Alan Rickman was a method actor. That means that he was generally trying to stay in character even when he wasn't shooting, and his character was a 'serious' actor who wouldn't appreciate humor on the set and didn't like Tim Allen's character. From everything I've read he was sometimes hard to get to know, but once you got to know him he was both funny and compassionate and a good friend to most all.

    On Star Trek, to simulate the ship being hit (or whatever other force being exerted on it) they have the actors jump, wobble, throw themselves around and cover it with camera shake. Galaxy quest actually built a set that moved. So the actors weren't faking it. Maybe some over-exaggeration, but it still was actually happening to them. I find it hilarious that the spoof has higher production value than the actual show.

    5:45 This was an amazing scene in the theater. The film was shot in 3 different aspect ratios. 1.43:1 for the "TV" scenes of the show, 1.85:1 for the other scenes up until this point when the overhead doors on the ship open and he's standing there looking into space - as those doors open, it switches to 2:35:1 Cinemascope for the remainder of the film. It was such an amazing transition.

    As an erstwhile hardcore Star Trek/sci-fi/anime fan who once went spent 72 hours without sleep (because I couldn't afford a room) and subsisted on the free condiments at the food concession so I could get a chance to get the autograph of my favorite manga artist on her only trip ever to the U.S. (which unfortunately got ruined by storm damage), adore this love letter to fandom.
    Enrico Colantoni who played Mathesar deserves some extra credit. He invented the lovably quirky speech patterns and body language of the Thermians. He did his audition first in a normal voice (and he nailed it according to the director), then he did it again using the signature Therman intonation which he based on a vocal exercise that stage actors often use to warm up their voices before a performance. He then came up with swinging the matching arm and leg when walking instead of the opposite arm and leg as people normally do, and he continued to build the whole physicality of the Thermians including their gestures and facial expressions. When extras were hired to play background Thermians, they were told "See that guy (Colantoni)? Do whatever he does."

    They get some fun digs at Star Trek and its fandom. The starship runs on Beryllium spheres instead of Di-Lithium crystals (Beryllium follows Lithium in the periodic table), the Transporter always having problems like the "Digital Conveyor", the Captain losing his shirt like Captain Kirk does during fight scenes, and the female character just barely above set dressing for the show. Also the trope of the Captain developing a love interest in many episodes. Fans numbering every episode was first done by Trekkers.

      Nobody should care what JJ Abrams says about Star Trek, since he has said he was never a fan of it. And he certainly didn’t “help create” it, he was brought in decades later by the studios to direct some films, which ended up being so bad they’ve been relegated to a separate timeline so as to not contaminate canon.
