How to Replace uPVC Window Handles

- Replacing uPVC window handles is easy! The most popular types are known in the trade as espag handles and are found on upvc windows. They can literally be changed in around 2 minutes flat! These handles have a spindle protruding from the back of the handle. All that you need to do to replace these handles is find the length of spindle needed. If you have broken a window handle then take a different handle off a nearby window by its two screws and the spindle will be revealed. You just need the exposed spindle length, or in other words the amount going into the window. Choosing from the window handles available is simple. You can use cranked window handles or inline handles but just make sure with cranked you get your handing correct: right handed opens anti-clockwise. The only tools needed for the job are a philips screwdriver, tape measure and a sharpish blade for prising the screw cover caps away. It makes sense therefore to get your replacement window handles ready so that you can change them over easily without leaving the window as a security risk.

the silver part of the lock that you put the key in pulled out . I can put it back in but there are two gold very small oblong pices that also come out how do i fit them back in?

Our window won't close/lock anymore, we took the handle off following your helpful video, but it seems that the inner metal part, which is supposed to have a square hole, that hosts the handle rod (sorry, I don't know the correct terms) have worn off, and is not square shaped anymore. So when the handle turns nothing happens. I wonder if this part can be replaced. And how?

+HandleStore the key button lock on my window spins loosely with the key in it and the handle is locked ,is it just a knackered button and i should just force the handle open and replace it ? and no i cant get to bottom screw as handle posiiton is locked
+girlsdrinkfeck You would need to ‘control break’ the window handle to release it but if you are unsure the other option is a locksmith.

yh i forced the handle upwards and the lock mechanism just snapped off ,the handle still worked anyway but looked messy after so got a replacement ,thanks

My handle snapped in half but it has now been replaced
The spring? has broken inside the handle so that when you depress the knob nothing happens and you can't turn the handle to open the window and making it impractical to get to the second screw and remove the handle. Any ideas?

Hi, sometimes the spindles corrode into the gearbox spigot due to water ingress. Try some 3 in 1 oil and leave it for a period. The challenge will be to get the oil into the window handle and the spindle. Otherwise you would need to get in contact with a local double glazing repairs company to help you.
My window handles move to the open position but the window remains shut and I can't open it even though the handle moves. Any ideas what that can be? It isn't locked or anything just won't open...
Hi, It sounds like the gearbox has gone inside the window. This will happen eventually with most locks and your best solution is to contact a local double glazing repairs company as it is quite involved.
My problem is that bolt things at the bottom
I have had 2 handles come away from the window this last week , can I fix them , it seems that spindle is left behind in the fitting and I just have the handle separate ? Can I just remove the fitting , if so will the spindle come out of the fitting and again , if so can I put the spindle back into the handle and put it all back together ? Thanks .

Got a couple of handles for free but the spindles are too short, is it possible to pull the spindles out and use the old ones or will it break the handle/lock?
Hi Louis Watson the spindles are generally factory fitted, so will be very difficult to move. You might be able to cut them down but again it can be very difficult to do by hand. If they are free then you have nothing to lose so you could try cutting them down. Hope this helps. Handlestore.
+HandleStore i put new handles on but the spindle is 40mm but the original was 20mm ,it goes in the window fine and works ,but could a longer spindle damage the window in long run ? there is no friction sounds or feeling when i turn the handle ... it is a rather thick frame anyway so enough void to not be a problem ?

Force it open, you should be able to break it without too much force. The reason I know this is that I just did it to 3 of my handles that were locked and I wanted to replace because all the keys were lost, good luck!

You DONT necessarily need to buy a new handle.If the handle has come off in your hand with the spindle still in the window.It is easy to fix.1.Follow the instructions for removal above.2.Line the spindle up with the hole in the handle and firmly tap the spindle in ensuring its as far in as it will go.3.Follow the steps for fitting a new handle back into place but ensure the handle is in the up(open)position.Test the handle opens and closes the window before tightening the screws.
My button won't press so I can't turn my handle to get to the 2nd screw, guess I'm not going to be able to change mine?

can anyone of you help me pls,on some of the double glaze windows the handles are loose,ivwe tighten up the two screws top and bottom but why is there still play/
Hi Jeffrey. It could be one of several things. The threads are stripped inside the window gearbox and just hanging on or the screws are too long. I would also check that the lugs under the handle base are going into the holes in the window so the handle can go down flat on the surface of the window. If you have an old window there may not be clearance holes for the lugs so you would have to open them up in that case. Hope this helps.
My handle won't move to allow access to the bottom screw.
Mine wouldn't move either. I tried with all of my strength but it wouldn't budge. Then after I said 'this window will open in Jesus' name' then it opened. Now I can install the new handle. It makes sense since..

My handle open and spins 180 degrees (handle hits frame otherwise i would imagine it would go all the way). The window remains locked. How do I get it open? Or will replacing handle fix it? Cheers

It sounds like the gearbox has gone for the multi-point lock.
Rather than try a new set of window handles you would do better to involve a
local double glazing repairs company as these products are difficult to replace
at the best of times.
