    WHO needs the rest of the orchestra (especially the strings) when you are able to articulate EVERYTHING via an entire horn section -- what MAGNIFICENCE !!! (While I am a trumpet player with 7 different "horns" of my own, I have always appreciated the way the true horns can "float in the Stratosphere" above the rest of everyone else. While "The Trumpet shall Sound", the composer, Richard Wagner said, "I wish I could score everything for HORNS."

    Remands me of the time I magesticly tried to play my horn upside down, and drained the spit into my mouth. And then even more magesticly spit that spit out. I'm so graceful, you wouldnt believe it.

      basil paws well for starters congrats you've picked up the horn, I am also a horn player I was the only one in band for four years and when I got to highschool I met 6 other horn players so it gets better. Next PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE (if you don't and you're an idiot like I did it will bite you in the ass in a few years) Listening to sheet music and pitches on UA-cam is a great source and you could ask your teacher for extra help before or after school. Also these are Vienna horns not French horns. Two very different instruments in the same family. Finally work on your embouchure, and posture It will help in the long run

    • @sealemonz4120
      @sealemonz4120 7 років тому +2

      basil paws also be sure to ask the teacher to teach you how to read rhythms and patterns in music and not teach you using the piano or horn where the teacher plays it and you play it back. That really doesn't help you learn and understand your instrument and the music you need to read

      dude french horn is awesome i've been playing it for 3 years, it sucks that your the only one in your band. you won't get the full experience until you join an ensemble with at least 4. and french is very difficult your first year ( well was for me and my friends at least) make sure to challenge yourself and never give up

    I think the Vienna horn is more suited to the loud heroic sort of music like this than the regular F horn. It's just capable of more of a brassy bite because it's so much brighter.

    • @skisunfb
      @skisunfb 5 років тому +3

      It is both darker and brighter (more F overtones) depending on the application, but always horn-like. The difference is that they carry without having to force dynamics. Here's a great example:

    The biggest differences are in the key (most modern horns are double and have Bb and F keys built in, while Vienna horns are only in F), and in the valve action. The modern horn has rotary valves, meaning that when the valve is depressed the internal action rotates to redirect the air into the valve slide. The Vienna horn has what's called pumpenvalves. It takes a bit more of an explaination for them, but you can read about them on the Vienna horn Wikipedia page.

      From what I can see, they are all Vienna horns, different from the usual French horn (or better said - Waldhorn which is a horn for or from the forest) in that the Vienna horn is actually a single F horn, not the double F-Bb horn with a thumb valve which we usually see. This gives the horn a really sweet and emotional sound, in my opinion. The valves are piston valves also, different from the usual rotary valves normally used on the horn. Vienna horn players will tell you that slurs sound superior because of the different valves. As a double horn player, I found the Vienna horn much more difficult to play when I studied in Vienna for a few years. But the Viennese are very proud of using the same traditional sort of horn for quite a while now. Back in the day, only Vienna horns could be played in the Philharmonic and they sounded spectacular.

      squishymonkey0518 Smaller bore, wider bell flare, no laquer, bell garland, terminal crook, natural horn mouthpiece, pumpenvalves, a good playing environment, and a hell of a lot of strength. Basically you have to be a vienna hornist.

      This is a Vienna Horn (Wiener Horn) It is harder to play than a franch - horn.

    • @mattstanton1614
      @mattstanton1614 10 років тому +1

      I would say trombone is the hardest unless you are playing a single horn or natural horn. I have played all brass instruments this is just my opinion

    • @caseydavis6689
      @caseydavis6689 10 років тому

      Lukas Griessenberger Dude, a Vienna horn simply has a different tubing wrap-it's still a French horn. It can be harder to play, but it produces a slightly different tone as you can hear from the video.

    • @emiliaoliveira5306
      @emiliaoliveira5306 10 років тому +1

      What I meant to say is that french horns aren't actually french it isn't even correct to call them french and vienna horns are just a "variety" of regular horns.

    • @pokemanic101
      @pokemanic101 10 років тому

      Emilia Oliveira Oh ok. I know they aren't French, I've been playing the instrument for seven years now actually (sounds like you play it too so you get a high five). But the name has stuck and while horn could refer to several iterations of the instrument, only one thing comes to mind when people say french horn. My comment was addressed to the rest of comment section and using the old name just keeps the message clear.

    I used to play the french horn, I loved it. My band teacher never helped me (I was the only frenchie) he left me to fend for myself. He never told me what I did wrong or what I did right, all he said was play louder. I played for 2 1/2 years and I just decided to quit band. I know it is pointless I'm just stating that he is a jerk for not helping me.

    • @wecandoittrucking
      @wecandoittrucking 8 років тому

      My band director does the same thing and I'm pretty sure all of them do.. The thing is with horn if he helped u as much as u needed, the rest of the band would never get attention. Most of the time u do have to "fend for yourself" but that's what makes us great!

      +Greg Monks my horn is an intermediate accent horn. It's got a silver coating (not brass) and the tone on it is fantastic. It's only 5,800. It's a double horn and it's fantastic according to my band directors and private lesson instructor
