    Video suggestion: TIPPING INTO THE BLOCK. Difficult but useful technique on tight sets to rebound the ball off the block, and reset the offense without sending the ball over and having to take an attack.

    Hi Donny, could you please define what an open hand tip is? I'm playing beach volleyball right now and some players don't understand what an open hand tip is and I'd like to make sure I know how to explain it to them. It gets frustrating playing a team that beats us by a couple of points that were scored with an open hand tips. Please help!

    • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast
      @LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 років тому

      basically the open hand tips that are illegal in beach volleyball are anything involving soft fingers. so you need to use your knuckes, straight fingers that are stiff (if the ball not only touches but actually bounces away from the finger tips) or any other hard part. in other wordd the rule is if it doesn't specifically bounce off whatever hits the ball (handsetting is the exception), then it's not a legal hit.

    Hi great video coach! Can you make one about how to make about hand contact and wrist snaps when spiking? It's quite easy when I'm tossing the ball for myself and hit against a wall but sometimes in games and when I jump for spiking I'm not contacting the ball the right way and just doing weird spikes. I don't know if my hand is too soft or if my wrist not enough flexible, or my contact point poor. If you have any advices or techniques to learn to garantee good contact it will be great! thanks

    • @corentincheik2794
      @corentincheik2794 8 років тому

      Some are talking about getting hand in "cobra" position before hitting the ball, what do you think about that?

    • @corentincheik2794
      @corentincheik2794 8 років тому

      ***** Yes I have! But I guess sometimes when I swing very quickly I have difficulties to keep my hand relax and I contact the ball with the middle of my fingers and not with my palm. I will try to always keep my wrist straight but I was wondering the position of the wrist when you have the elbow high aiming to hit. Straight hand relax?

    • @randomdudewholikesanime1985
      @randomdudewholikesanime1985 3 роки тому

      Corentin CHEIK I don’t really understand what you’re asking, and this is 4 years late, but, I personally look at where I want to hit the ball. It’s usually above midline. If you can consistently hit above midline with a more flexible wrist I find it generates more topspin and creates a cleaner spike

    HEY! Thank you so much! Great video! I really do appreciate it! I perfectly understood the roll shot but isn't the cut shot where you spike it and it reaches narrowly on the opposite side of where you're spiking? Like for example if I was playing outside hitter and I spike to where the opposite outside hitter is usually positioned. An example could also be in Haikyuu when Bokuto cuts the shot avoiding the block or when Earvin Ngapeth was playing in the 2014 Poland FIVB world league and he made the same shot I described against Australia. Correct me if I'm wrong! please!

    why I cant spike while approaching the ball? i mean always i spike the ball into the net!

    • @usedtobeunlogicalpanda3658
      @usedtobeunlogicalpanda3658 5 років тому

      If you are spiking the ball into the net it can be two things that cause that. One of them is not swinging fast enough. The common problem though is that when players jump they tend to drop their swinging arm as they go up in the air. Make sure that when you jump both hands are up and ready to spike the ball. This will help you hit on top of the ball and usually it fixes that problem.

    in beach volleyball is it legal to tip using pointy and middle knuckles but also with an open thumb?

    • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast
      @LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 років тому +1

      MikeAIright technically by the rulebook i think the open thumb is illegal.
      however, in reality this thumb is very hard to spot for the referee. this means chances are you will get away with it all the way to the pro level where you may get caughts if there is a very hawk-eyed referee.
      i'll even go as far as saying that statistically you might be better off with using the thumb if you get better control with it that you would lose poimts more often for lack of control without thumb vs getting caught by a referee with thumb. haha like strategical rulebreaking.
      (if you don't get that last part, consider these made up statistics: lets say you can use your thumb 19 times uncaught until a referee spots you and you lose the ball because of it. this means out of 20 balls you lose 1 because of your thumb technique. now, if you went without the thumb and it led to worse control for you, so now out of those 20 pokes 3 went out of bounds and 2 were picked up by the defender whereof one leads to a kill by the other team. now all of the sudden you lost 4 out of 20 pokes because of your lack of thumb technique. in other words the thumb poke technique is 4x more effective even though it is illegal by the rulebook. now is this applicable to real life? hard to say and probably depends on a whole lot of variables, only way to really know for oneself is i guess to run a thorough statistical experiment over a long time if you want to get really nerdy about it! :) )

    • @MikeAIright
      @MikeAIright 6 років тому

      could you send me a link or paste the line where it says its illegal? I'think its illegal but someone said the thumb doesn't count as a finger so its allowed to be open thumb? idk please show me some documentation where its illegal

    • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast
      @LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 років тому

      I got unsure myself so went and looked at the FIVB 2017-2020 beach volleyball rulebook, and found this:
      13.2.3 A player completes an attack-hit using an open-handed finger action or
      if using finger tips that are not rigid and together.
      The thumb could maybe be considered as open handed (I guess in a poke with your thumb involved your thumb would be "open hand" and the other fingers closed. However, the thumb definately violates the second part of not being allowed to use fingertips in any way except if rigid and together. The tip of the thumb is in play and it's separate from the others and not rigid, so at least I interpret it being illegal! :)

    • @MikeAIright
      @MikeAIright 6 років тому

      Damn dude i wanted a solid answer. Some guy told me it was legal because the thumb doesnt count as a finger

    • @LearnBeachVolleyballFast
      @LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 років тому +1

      Hahah! Well, I guess to be really sure you'd have to talk to an official referee (preferable several of them), because in a way I guess what they do is interpret the rulebook plus that they probably have way more in depth training where they discuss these small nuances of the rules. If I was you I'd just use the thumb if it helps you, most people won't even notice it and if someone starts complaining just give the point away and be happy, it will happen so rarely that you'll win in the long run anyway. At least noone has ever complained about my thumb which I've used for 4 years playing in I think 6 different countries.
      Then about the thumb not being a finger.. I mean the thumb IS a finger. And there is no line in the rulebook stating that the thumb is an exception from the rule, therefore I guess normal vocabulary and language should apply. So I definately read that officially it is not allowed.
