The new BY-M1s only works with devices that supply plug-in power or phantom power. I tested it with my Tascam DR10x which supplies neither and the BY-M1s doesn't work. I like this series of microphones. They sound good with my voice. So luckily I have to choices that do work with my Tascam. Cheers and good show.
Tbh. They all appeared to sound good in this video. You'll be the best to work out what's best, without UA-cam compression etc hampering the audio. Cheers Mike
I was about to order the Boya By-m1s, because I didn't want to worry about batteries dying on me while I was out and about. But, what you said at 4:46 changed my mind. I only use smartphones to make videos. So if the 'smartphone mode' is the 'un-powered mode,' I can just use the original by-m1 model without worrying about batteries. Am I right about that?
the batteries in the bym1 last for ages anyway and from my knowledge the power is only a very brief blip to signal the connected device to let it know what is actually plugged in.
I modded my HTC vive Pro 2 VR-Headset with this Mic, for vrc and other Games, amazing sound results! Finally my friends can hear my voice without being squeky or buzzy ^^
Personally not a user but sound quality is very good. I was expecting much higher price 2bh so seems a great package. Could do with a wifi version then your cable free! Thanks for reviewing Mike and Kath👍
Cheers for the video Mic, just watched this video again due to black Friday as was considering the pro but you convinced me to get the S. Biggest reason for me is I have gone through 3 BY-M1 mics now due to forgetting to turn the thing off and for some reason that kills them. Hopefully the fact the S not needing batteries will make it last allot longer. p.s. used you link ;)
This is an outstanding video and helped me a lot. I would like to ask you if I need a TRRS adaptor for the M1S. Thank you for sharing you knowlege, I appreciate it.
the battery is just to send a signal i think and after the switch and signal are sent the battery is not used. either should be okay with an iphone with the right adapter
I'm planning to get one of these for calling purposes with my phone. I will be using it outdoors and I'm concerned with it picking up my surroundings, which model should I go for in my case?
Nice review - I justbought a M1S based on it. You mention that you though the level was hot? I'm plugging into a Tascam DR-05X portable recorder, input gain maxed and I'm seeing levels around -20 to -17 dB with a normal speaking voice, which seem to be a bit low - does that match what you'd expect?
@@mikesunboxing hey, thanks for responding so quickly. Yup, got in on CAMERA and checked that power is on. I imported an audio file into Cubase and it needed so much gain that the cable noise made it unusable- I think this one may be faulty (or fake) - I have a no brand lav from somewhere, more of a toy than a proper mic, and it overloads the recorder at max gain and produces more useable recordings. I've started an Amazon return on the Boya and I'm going to spend some more and try a s Sen XS. Thanks again.
Actually, if your camera/recorder provides plugin power to the microphone, even the M1 or the M1Pro can work without battery, all you need is a TRRS->TRS adapter.
I just discovered this - that I need to use an adapter - do you happen to know why we need to use an adapter? I thought the CAMERA setting switched to TRS anyway?
I don't know why they rate the M1S at 50Hz when they provide an SPL graph that clearly shows it is almost flat down to 20Hz. The M1 and M1 Pro also have the same graph in the manual yet they seem to sound different here.
@@mikesunboxing I wanted to use one of these lav mics as a cheap solution to a calibrated measurement mic (use the graph data as a cal file in REW) but now I'm not sure of the accuracy.
@@mikesunboxing Hi, im testing the m1s on my desktop pc, with a asus a320m-k prime motherboard, and it record my voice low, really low, i can set more db in configuration, but the sound qualty is bad
Thanks, just bought it as I woned M1, M1 Pro so now i'ts a time for a new S :) With my M1 I got broken the cable M1 Pro starts hissing, cable might be an issue too but I am fine with it as they worked through a many vids.

This video demonstrates an advantage of being a perfectionist. Thanks for the very specific detailed review, I will be buying one.

Yeah UA-cam does change the audio a little I think

which one do you think is better for creating UA-cam videos?
i use the M1S daily now, the mic has settled down a bit and with my gain at the lowest on the camera it sounds good in my opinion
@@mikesunboxing Thanks Mike :)
Which one do you recommend for UA-cam channel please !?
m1s for me, i use it everyday
Thanks for the video, was just looking for the differences as I’m in need for one.
Glad I could help
Hey Mike
Nice review
Please tell me which one should I pick
Boya m1 classic or new boya m1s
m1s all the way

no it has it built in
Which one would be best for pc use / discord?
i would go with new one the gain is much better
When would you actually need the ones with a battery? Does the M1S work with an iPhone or does a phone work better with a powered mic?
the battery is just to send a signal i think and after the switch and signal are sent the battery is not used. either should be okay with an iphone with the right adapter

seems a bit low? is it in the camera or smartphone position? the tascam will probably need it in camera position

Awesome review, thanks mate
So what was the purpose of the battery on the M1?
The battery sends an electric signal to the connected device to say it is a trs or trrs plug
@@mikesunboxing Ah so the M1S found a way to eliminated the need for this ? Amazing. Thanks Mike

yes that should work
@@mikesunboxing ❤️ from india 🙏
Does it have the same quality if used with a phone or does it have a drop?
doesn't seem to make any difference which mode it is in
hellos! which input settings should i use for the m1s on windows? i think default was 2 channels, 16 bit, 48K Hz DVD quality
sounds good to me

What about the new M1 Pro II?

Can this Boya Lavalier mic be connected and used as a Lavalier for a wireless mic?
yes it can
Boya m1s or boya m1 pro 2 ?
i prefer the m1s

Hi Mike, what software were you using to see (in realtime) picks from the mic on your screen?
Thank you
not sure what you mean there, but i use a combination of pre recorded footage, obs screen recording and adobe premiere to edit
@@mikesunboxingThank you Mike, I meant the software you use to view audio signals on the screen as you talk.
I think it's OBS?
