  • In this impromptu video, I combine two grappling drills I learned from two different Japanese Jujitsu instructors; Ray McKinnon and Chris Michaels.
DRILL 1: The first starts standing with pummeling. Get a whizzer when your partner gets the underhook. Step out and crank the elbow. From there, do a takedown to side control.
DRILL 2: Once your partner frames on your hip, pinch his arm with your knee. Do a helicopter spin to mount and finish with an armbar. There is also an option for a top triangle.
A couple of parts of this drill "feel like" karate techniques. The helicopter spin feels like a spinning heel kick. The leg position for the armbar feels like kosa dachi (cross-leg stance). The leg configuration for the triangle choke feels like the crane stance from Gankaku.
Cross-training is fun and beneficial. Supplement your karate!

Very interesting. I’d include some resistance to pummeling. Wrestlers have a nice way of freeing an underhook and various takedowns. I liked your takedown version and wonder how it will work with some resistance. (Might turn into one of Iain’s takedowns from Funakoshi.) Cross step to mount looks like a big move.

Nice Andy, great you are integrating your JJJ...combat sports integration always makes for good functional upgrades.
