- Depending on how you look on kata you might find that sometimes kicks are not the best option especially in close distance.
For example uraken yoko Geri in Pinan 4 works better as grab with off balance and a throw.

Sensei, excuse my smartassery (Judo black belt here)
Those are osoto gari and harai goshi, do you Karate guys call that Yoko geri?
Oss!
Hi no, in karate we have kick to the side called yoko Geri that can be used as a throw. As you pointed out mechanics are the same as Harai Goshi, second md one is more Uchi Mata. I use judo terminology for throws, but original karate terminology differs to judo. Thank you for watching !
I totally agree. The kick is most likely a throw. The "cup and saucer" position with the hands just before the kick and the slight sinking of the body weight shows the balance break. In shotokan we often use yoko geri keage instead of kekomi. To me it looks like a o soto guruma ua-cam.com/video/-OftQzN00AQ/v-deo.html
Yeah it can be o Soto Guruma I’m doing it in a little straighter angle but movement is the same.
