HOW TO CUT A CLASSIC FLATTOP

- One of the most requested haircuts to make a step-by-step video of was THE FLATTOP and since I fuckin’ love all of y’all I called in THE STOOG and THE PRIEST to make that happen, The Priest turned the whole bloody sabbath into a 40 MINUTE (😱) sermon of the greasy laws of The Lard with his loyal servant EL CARNICERO non stop blabberin’ an hollerin’.
Those who have been to one of our shows or attended a course at @theoldschoolbarberacademy might know that we consider the flattop haircut in all it’s square forms to be the foundation of classic barbering and the roots of Hogtology... For us, UNDERSTANDING the flattop means understanding every men’s cut in the book... (understanding a haircut is SO MUCH more important than the mere execution of that cut).
I went for a very old school approach for this video, a 50’ inspired, tapered chop very close to a short pomp... In the weeks to come I’ll try to do a video of a military style as well as my favourite “flattop with fenders”. I did not know there was variation of flat top. My barber who did my hair always did a phenomenal military style flat top.
From other barbers always got a square flat top which with my hair doesn’t look great and have to get a haircut frequently.
Thank you now I can ask any new barber for a flat top again as I thought they were doing it all wrong

Great work. I got my first flat top when I was 14 back in about 1977. The barber, “Bill The Butcher” of Abbeywood in South London, gave me a proper Mac Curtis style Rockabilly cut. It was different to your cut as the sides were left longer, greased and swept around into a DA at the back. You can see the style in original pictures of Mac Curtis plus the kiss curl at the front, very cool. He used the big flat top comb to get the top right. Wish I still had the hair for it!

Thought of skipping this video at first because it was too long. But after watching it, WOW!!! Excellent in explaining it, and error proof. The barber gives very clear and concrete directions that even people who have never cut hair can follow - a very talented and experienced barber. Can't wait to practice on my young son, and finally give my dad the haircut that he always gets. Thank you sir!

Omg you’re hysterical! I’m starting work at an all men’s salon so I’ll be watching more barbering videos. I’m confused as to why new aged barbers totally cut a line in then bald it out then fade with all different clippers and attachments, it seems like it’s backwards way then what I was taught. Thanks for the flat top! I got that down now.

When I was still training in Karate. My Sensei told us the story about when Bruce Lee came in to the dojo. He had everyone put on their boots and locked all the doors saying, Im going to teach you the secrets. All the students were waiting with anxious expectations. They ended up doing basic front kicks, blocks and punches all night for hours. In their shoes! The lesson was that the basics were EVERYTHING. And using what you have at that moment to your best advantage. Real life! Even in boots. This is a true story. My instructor was Chuck Sullivan and he was Ed Parkers 2nd official student in that first school in SoCal. Bruce Lee is a Legend for things like this. Just as you are for your contributions to Barbering, RJR! The way you break it down is like no other! Use what tools work for you, stick to the basics. Don’t make it harder-than it is. 💈❤️😘💈😊🖤💈💪🏼🐽 (I know you could finish this in 1/3 the time :) Thank you!
