    Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, as we test a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 220 CE (C124/W124), we test out the seatbelt "butler", the fancy way of folding the rear head rests, have a nice relaxing drive and generally experience very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward then!

    The passenger mirror was shaped differently ( taller and narrower) to enable a better view of the road alongside the car and a better angle to rear of the car.
    It also helped with parking , allowing for a better view of the kerb.

    Peak Mercedes here for me, I always preferred this era of Mercedes Benz and for some reason the cloth interior and no air con really appeal to me.
    A excellent review as always Sir.

      Glad you enjoyed it, sir! Very much a classic these days, and with rather a reputation to uphold as well.

    Proper motoring behind the classic Mercedes Benz grill and three pointed star .

    Thank you, sir, what a lovely trip down memory lane this was! Back in the early 2000s, I was the proud owner of a G-plate 300 TE estate. In the 6 years I owned the car I did nearly 100k miles, so the dash of the W124 model is embedded in my memory! I loved the car, it was perfect for a family of 6, it had the rear facing 3rd row.

      Yes, the Volvo 240 and the S124 Mercedes Estates were very much of their time, and generally owned by a certain type of person. Glad you enjoyed this video, sir!

    Nice car for sure. Those poverty-spec Mercs are sometimes even more interesting than luxurious ones. Who's to know that this car has woodgrain even if seats are cloth. I think the other car where it's possible to meet such a combination (at least for me) was my dad's 2006 Hyundai Sonata (although the wood was fake of course).

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it would be disingenuous to describe this as poverty spec, really, as it was still a very expensive luxury car when it was new, but there are some surprising omissions nevertheless. Hope you enjoyed the video, sir!

    It was great to meet you sir! It’s a great video and thanks for looking after the old girl.
    I love the basic spec and wouldn’t change anything on it. I have found out that a previous owner did have beige leather seats front and rear in it at one point.

      Sir, thank you ever so much indeed again for letting me have a go in your amazing 220 CE. It was quite an experience, and most enjoyable. I want to see what it looked like with the beige leather interior now!

    Wunderbar! I wanted my dad to get a W124. Maybe a used 230E or 260E. He was apprehensive of the running costs. Held their value extremely well.

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      Yes, they certainly used to. The options list was crazy on these as well. I hope that you enjoyed the video, even if your father ended up not getting a W124.

    Despite the car being thirty years old I do find it to be very attractive in appearance. It matters.

    Classic looks with top class engineering.
    Definitely the route to go for a first time Classic that should bring the least amount worries over reliability or major expense.
    Lovely car.

    A timeless shape that is very elegant. Higher specification and a beige leather interior would finish off the interior ambience, I found the cloth used on the seats, rather rough to the touch and utilitarian. I recall a W124 200 saloon with the same trim. The only electrical item was for the passenger side mirror, It was absolute poverty spec and disgraceful for a Mercedes-Benz.

    Good Morning Sir, W124 is definitely my choice regardless whether it’s Coupe, Saloon or T

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      Sir, I thought you may be amenable to one of these. I think I need a beige leather interior in any I were to own, though.

    I recall reviews of the W124 when new saying do not under any circumstances buy a manual - not just for the foot-operated parking brake you mention but also because a manual just wouldn’t suit the character of this car. As you so rightly point out, it’s a cruiser and an “Autobahnsturmer” not a sports car to hustle down a tight, twisty road. The same reviewers noted not to purchase the contemporary Jaguar XJ6 without leather and auto.

    • @paulie-Gualtieri.
      @paulie-Gualtieri. Рік тому

      The Getrag 265 Manual Gearbox from the contemporary XJ40 and the XJS is in demand and extremely expensive now if you can find one. A Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar, without an automatic transmission and a leather interior and rear headrests, is just plain wrong.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому

      Yes, I have driven a manual Mercedes (a C200), and to be honest, it wasn't great. A lot of Mercedes I have driven have tended to be a bit underpowered, due to the sort of people who buy them, who aren't really the most demanding drivers, but the automatic is probably the best choice most of the time. I am not sure Mercedes sell any manual cars any more, actually!
