  • Take an in depth look at one of the most recognizable roller coasters in the UK with the wing coaster at Thorpe Park 'The Swarm.' The ride has a post apocalyptic theme and will take riders through 5 inversions throughout the 2,500 foot long ride.

    As someone who’s home park is Thorpe Park, I rode The Swarm backwards many times and I’d safely say that it’s much better forwards. The forces feel really unnatural, and you don’t experience any of the near miss elements, because you can’t see them coming. Great review, I agree that the theming is the best thing about The Swarm

    Unfortunately my last memory of swarm is not a good one. On the final break-run a wasp went up my sleeve and due to the incredibly tight restraints I was not able to get it out. Stuck on the track for what seemed like an eternity waiting for the next train to leave punching and flailing my arms around while being stung wasn't fun lol. People must've thought I was insane.
    but apart from that 10/10

      @Tom BEVAN [09C11M] I can imagine the guys opening up the ride for the first day of the season. "sh*t look, there's a wasp nest above the platform. I'll call pest control" supervisor pauses, considering the ride's theme. Grabs the ride operators wrist as he reaches for the phone, "leave it"

    personally, the swarm is my favourite wing coaster. worldwide as well. it's unique theming and actually having special effects made the ride so unique and just offered something that the other wing coasters just didn't. the swarm's near miss element is also awesome because you go through this zero-g roll, having fire launched at you and then flying through this torn open sign is awesome. then the near roll near-missing on the church and actually interacting with the station is something incredibly unique. Now one of my favourite things about the swarm is now actually sadly missing. there were 2 seasons (I think it was 2013-2015 but may have been 2014-2016) when the last to cars of the train would face backwards. this was what honestly put the swarm ahead of flug der demonen for me and it worked so well for the swarm, although you missed out on the whole near-miss factor, that first few rides on it would really though you off you and you'd be hit by back to back elements that you had no clue about (unless you had ridden it before) but going in as someone that wasn't a coaster enthusiast when I rode it backwards the first time, I had no idea what hit me but I loved not knowing where I was going next
    Edit: also flying under the plane's wing on the first drop is also an incredible addition to the ride

  • @XiL3d_
    @XiL3d_ 2 роки тому +6

    If you ever see this here's a tip: You can reride the swarm about 10 times in the last 30 minutes of the day (except for fright nights) no matter how busy it is. This is because it feels so far away from the exit people normally want to do something that feels closer for their final ride such as saw and collosus.

    I have ridden 3 of the 4 European Wing Coasters yet and The Swarm is my favorite. I really like the theming and the Dive Drop as well as the Inline Twist are awesome and it is pretty intense. The length definitely isn’t great and the part after the MCBR is disappointing but I like it overall. I prefer the front (right side) (did it 2 times, 1 time Front right and 1 time back left) because of some really good near misses and I enjoyed the right side in total more. I am excited to ride Gate Keeper for the first time in ~2 weeks.
    My ranking:
    1. The Swarm
    2. Fenix
    3. Flug der Dämonen

    I live in the uk, and its disappointing that most of our rides are very short, apart from smiler and the one at lightwater valley, when there are rides like gatekeeper or thunderbird.

    B&m wingcoasters are just too smooth, if that makes sense. Because theyre so smooth, it just feels like youre kinda gliding up and down a bit, and they just dont provide a very intense or forceful ride.

    Your comment about no shade in queue or station is understandable but 2018 was like the hottest year on record for england normally its just cold

    1:55 I think that the ride has the best themeing ( one second later) I think that this coaster is the best themed ride 🤣

    How does this compare to like Gatekeeper or X Flight?

    • @CoasterStudios
      @CoasterStudios  5 років тому

      This is a lot shorter (in terms of length) than Gatekeeper, and is a little shorter than X-Flight. This has a better theme than both of those though. I also think this has the better train design.

    What about raptor's theming, it is awsome

    The final inline twist over the station is surprisingly forceful- even in the front. It proves that wing coasters don't need to be "boring". Waiting in the station and also riding it, I heard everyone scream at that final twist, lulled as they were into a sense of "oh this is a fun family ride" and then suddenly wrenched head over heels pretty hard.

    I appreciate the swarm because its decent for a very early generation wing coaster and i would rather it was short than kind of dies like gatekeeper

    I actually found the most positives were on the front, also the drop and view is the best on the front. And the vests didn’t tighten on me.

    Do you think the swarm has better theming than raptor at gardaland?

    • @visionist7
      @visionist7 5 років тому

      Raptor gets brownie points for being the original B&M wing coaster. I'm not sure if they invented the concept or if other manufacturers already produced wing coasters.

      I would say they're about on the same level. I prefer Swarms theme, but in terms of level of detail, they're pretty equal IMO.

    As a local this is my favourite ride but it’s not long enough bro

  • @cooperboy64

    so, pretty well put. A lot of people love it because its the new coaster and is by far the smoothest coaster in the park, which a LOT of the GP love. it has an insanely good throughput and is really re-rideable because of its horrifically short length.
    The backwards seats when they put those in... well... I rode it right at the back, and it fuckin sucked. the whip you mentioned you get at the back just felt wrong when going backwards and it really kinda hurt your legs and made a really neat and comfortable ride kinda achey…
    Personally I find it the worst coaster at the park just because it doesn't thrill me whatsoever. Got a lot of inversions on our coasters here so I don't care for being flipped, and the ride is too forceless and comfortable. The only good bit is the back seat whip at the start (as mentioned0 and the hangtime (that you barely feel ty to the restraints).

    I don't know, somehow the score for this one doesn't add up to me. You describing it makes it sound like a very "mehh" ride with a good theming to it, for me that sounds much more like a 7.

    • @CoasterStudios
      @CoasterStudios  5 років тому +1

      Soonjai it’s either a 7 or 8. Back row for me is an 8, front is probably a 7.

    The Swarm wasn‘t the first B&M Wing Coaster in Europe, that was Raptor in Gardaland. Those two were even the first two B&M Wingers in the world…
