Free car! Told it has issues, will it get me 250 miles?

- I have a surprisingly good run to London on public transport, experience the Elizabeth Line for the first time and collect a new car from just outside the Ultra Low Emission Zone. But what is it? And will it get me home?
Delightful HubNut goodies can be purchased at hubnut.org or at our Hoodie store: hubnut-store.c... - this second store is where you can find "Because French" merch and much more.

Thank you for this video, Ian! And especially for understanding how sad I was to let Miss Daisy go. Was a bit gutted that you didn’t have any issues with her on the way back to Wales 😂 because it means I might’ve been able to keep her a bit longer but I’m really glad she’s part of the Hub Nut family now where she can be appreciated for the lovely car she is and be looked after as well as she looked after me. Happy retirement, Miss Daisy! 🥹💖
Thanks for letting me take her away. Such a lovely little car. Can understand why you were sad to see her go.
What a generous action and intent. Good on you. I hope you have a splendid new (to you) motoring vehicle in your life.
You kept her in lovely condition (despite the rust problems). A credit to you!
@@HubNut If you have to part with it I would be happy to have it for my lady to learn to drive in!
Miss Daisy will be in safe hands with Ian Hubnut, what a lovely thing to do , may good karma return to you for your kindness 😊
What a lovely gesture from a genuine lovely person - it's so lovely to know that in this awful world in which we live, that there is still such kindness around
Looks like a lovely car, very generous for the last owner to give it to you for free.
I have to say when I lived in London I decided the perfect car for London was a V8 E38 BMW (the one Hubnut reviewed) because it was good at getting as far away from the place as possible on the weekends.
For many years (as in, nearly 30) I commuted into the toilet that is London. I still maintain that the best sign on the A1 is the one that reads THE NORTH Hatfield...
@@phillipsmiley5930 That sounds fascinating - do tell...
I drove a e38 from not far away from where Ian is. A lovely 735i which I paid £600 for in 2013. Drove it all the way to London Greenwich. Must say relaxing as cars go to drive. Effortless power and the best cabin and driving position. If it wasn’t for 2 issues I would still have it. One was the electrical gremlin which could not be traced possible loom issue. The other the gearbox was problematic and couldn’t find a suitable replacement but at 180k it had done well. I’d have another but a tidy one is huge money now
Great addition to the fleet, I've always admired the look of these. Maybe all it needed was an Italian tune-up.
It's been in London for a while, all it needs is a fluid change and good bloody ragging out of our horrible metropolis
Aka the Italian tune-up
Maybe this is one car you should consider getting absolute perfect and as near to concourse as possible. You've got something really lovely and special here.
As a regular user of the Elizabeth line at Paddington, I had to smile at you not realising that you were looking at its new entrance before walking off. Lovely little car, I'm sure Miss Daisy will be getting some TLC from you.
Just wonder why Google maps was telling him to go another way though!
Absolutely LoVE Miss Daisy. I totally get why you couldn’t pass up on this either. What a brilliant addition to the fleet but also a save of a rare and forgotten car!
What a cracking little car, amazing equipment levels and safety kit for the time.
I look forward to seeing more videos about this car. I can still vaguely remember when this car was launched and how it was said to have "love it or loathe it looks". The result of that is a car that is now fairly interesting. Daihatsu were also the kings if making zippy small engines too.
I think Miss Hubnut will love this car.
cracking little car that if you drove it 250 mls & it put a smile on your face its a keeper i bet miss hubnut will love that
my first car was a Renault 12 ,I couldn't give it away, had to pay to have her scrapped..happy times! :) way way back in the 80s when music was good!
If I were to play internet car doctor for a minute, based off Chop's experience with the micra, and my own with a diesel Panda which tried to breathe water, it may have been some foreign matter in the MAF sensor which has since been sucked out, or some other kind of intermittent issue in that area. regardless, it seems like a nicely HubNut addition to the fleet
18:37 sums up this channel perfectly. Porsche 911 passes and Ian is more interested in the Nissan van
718 Cayman actually
I dealt with crazy London traffic for almost 15 years so I feel your pain
The free car is in very good shape. Very well taken cared of I got to say. It's a keeper for sure. The previous owner so nice to let you have it.
You just can't beat small Japanese cars.
What a gift.
What a beautiful little car Ian. Perhaps your slightly harder driving blew the catalyst clean, or pushed some crud out of the injectors or fuel-rail pressure-relief valve or something? After the owner had given up on the little soul, it is rather nice it has found a new home in the HubNut fleet despite having been cured on the way to Wales (I suspect being in Wales is a cure in itself).
You were a brave man waving that phone about in London, that car was registered in Devon originally torbay. Haxbys of Plymouth car
Beautiful little car, great color too, and it appears to be in terrific shape.
After your safe trip home ,
You should send the previous owner a bouquet of flowers.
Keep up the good work
Very entertaining Ian !. I genuinely expected a “Vice Grip Garage” tale of woe, driving the 250 miles home. But a great little car there, I would look after it and let it enjoy the lovely Welsh coast away from the suffocation of London….it deserves it…
Such a lovely little car and it seems no issues bar the wiper blades (fingers crossed). I do get what you mean in "if there's nothing wrong with it you won't feel good taking it for free" but they wanted a good home for Daisy and they got one so they'll be happy.
Maybe Ian will send Shâo some flowers and choccies.
Gonna miss driving past this, papped it myself not long ago. But i’m more than happy to see it’s fallen into the right hands.
I've often found you can obtain a new lease of life from old wiper blades if you use some ScotchBrite and run that along the wiping edge. Seems to clean all the built-up grime and exposes a new edge of the rubber. It goes without saying also, that the glass must be spotless for any wiper to work efficiently.
Nice to see HubNut driving round my neck of the woods. And love that you pinged up to say '10 miles took 1 hour' as it reminds me that the rest of the country doesn't see this as normal!
"Oh, look! Some Nissan... erm... is that a Serena? Followed by some Porsche thing..."
EVERY run-of-the-mill car UA-camr wouldn't have bat an eyelid on the Serena and would've concentrated 100% on the Porsche! 😂
That's why I love your channel!
Still 1972 tubes in London. And they’re the nicest on the whole London Underground network.
The Berlingo and now this. You're on a roll with good buys Ian!
What a little belter! Awesome colour too. Maybe there's an intermittent fault, maybe not but at least you got it back to base without drama.
That was better than every episode of top gear I’ve ever seen.
Welcome Miss Daisy, she looks lovely and didn't let you down on you maiden voyage together. May you enjoy many, many miles together. I can certainly sympathise with the previous owner, I've done the same where I've given a vehicle away as it had a fighting chance of being used and maintained as a complete vehicle vehicle rather than someone who took it to break it for spares.
Indeed. I kept my 18 year old car for a bit when I got a newer one recently, but it wasn't practical - I couldn't afford to run two cars and it developed minor faults from disuse. In the end, I donated it to the 'Giveacar' charity (who I can heartily recommend) to benefit the International Red Cross, but with very mixed feelings after 14 years of ownership. The collection trailer guy told me it'd probably be broken up for spares which I found a bit sad. However, I was very happy to recently find on the DVLA site that it was taxed and on the road again. So someone had bought it from the scrapyard and fixed it up.
@@frglee It's brilliant to hear this, one of the vehicles I gave away was restored as well, I'm unsure about the other one. I know some of the spares hadn't been made for a decade and were quite difficult to come by. To be honest that one was on its last legs when I bought and it was over ten years old then it but I had it fixed up, used it and kept it for 12 years. Part of me wants to check if it's still around on the DVLA website but the other part would prefer to remember it as it was without knowing.
Looks like you have a good one there. Seems to go well. Most small 4 speed automatics need 3rd gear to keep going along at motorway speeds with an incline or headwind.
It will be interesting to see what welding it's had.
That's a great car you've been given for free, nice addition to the fleet, may become a daily driver
I do love a Daihatsu, especially the JDM models but they are all good in my book. I did own an automatic Daihatsu and it was the nicest automatic box ever in a small car. I’ve seen a few rusty ones, I guess the level of rust protection is maybe not adequate for the UK winter use of salt on the roads.
I recognized a lot of places in that video as I’ve driven all those roads many many times even though I don’t live in UK anymore, this summer we were in the UK and I did stop at Magor Services, fortunately in the summer daytime they had a Cornish pasty van just outside the door and that was excellent, but in general I am always disappointed with UK motorway services and prefer to get off the motorway completely and use local services in towns.
Fantastic journey brings back memories of buying cars then the adventure home, in an untested vehicle, oh the amount of trust we used to place in people, brilliant please more road trips thank you again 😁👍
What a cracking little car Ian ! Once you’ve given her a service she’ll be even better 👍
Thoroughly enjoyed watching the collection caper Ian and Carly, hope you both get a lot of enjoyment out of Miss Daisy
What a great little motor, most enjoyable to see a trouble-free journey for you as I think you deserve that, thanks for sharing and I look forward to more on Miss Daisy, well done!
What a lovely purchase! Brings back memories to me as well because I owned one in the same colour, albeit with the 1.3 litre engine. I hope you will enjoy many happy miles with her!
Looks like Miss Daisy was not used enough on long runs. Driving back to Wales will do it good.
Can't help thinking the lack of power could have been down to a slipped floor mat restricting the throttle pedal. Happened to me a few years ago in my Chevette. Not nearly as big a problem as my dog's tennis ball rolling under the brake pedal approaching a roundabout.. Best of luck with the new arrival, Ian.
Check the air filter element, and replace the fuel filter. Possible source of previous owner complaints? Maybe Miss Daisy just needed to have the carbon blown out of her cylinders by a nice run on the motorway. City driving is hard on vehicles. Dogs, people, horses, and cars, all need exercise. London is as bad as New York for traffic. What a nice car, especially at
the price.
There’s a council-run 50kW EV charging hub in the centre of Portishead, 3ish miles from Gordano services. Not ideal, I realise, but it’s newish and well maintained.
Amazing video as always and great car. Lovely to meet you at the Practical Classics show. You inspire me and keep the good work up Ian
Nice car. I love the retracting mirrors. Let me tell you a bit of a secret in regards to the out of order shake machine. A lot of times the shake machine works fine but the employees don't want to clean it at the end of the night as they are a pain to clean (I always had to clean the one at the McDonalds I worked at as a 16-18 year old back in the 1990's) so it is easier to turn it off and tell folks it is not working
A Lovely little car. I hope you can give it a new lease of life Ian.
An excellent addition. Intererested to see a daylight full video review on this one, and to see how it settles into your Fleet. I hope its a long termer!
What a Cracking car to get for free, I very much look forward to seeing updates and any issues you might have if any. It's a Daihatsu so not alot can really go wrong mechanically. This was from a Time when the Japanese where at their Peak in Engineering.
These travel videos are my favourite
A free car and a Daihatsu to boot. No wonder you had to have it. Really looking forward to seeing how this one goes. 🤞
Excellent episode! Looks like the Sirion is a good’n, and I look forward to future adventures.
I am so glad to hear that Ms Daisy's rear arches look better than YOUR rear arches do.... although I am positive that welding Ms Daisy's must have been much easier than welding yours! 🤣
Cracking little car. I really like the Sirion, they’re a pretty little car. Miss. Daisy certainly seems to drive fine. Hopefully rust won’t be a serious problem despite the fact that she has had extensive welding carried out for the MOT.
I bet this car has been mainly driven around London's congested roads recently, probably rarely above 10 mph! It's amazing what an 'Italian tune up' can do. That's probably why you had no problems with her!
That “Italian tune up” made me smile!
You have to treat Google Maps directions with care in cities. The GPS is mightily confused by buildings. It's called "canyon effect", where the signal takes multiple paths off the buildings.
Tell me about it - I used mine in Leeds to find a bar I was unfamiliar with, ended up walking in circles in the rain till someone came to rescue me. Never using it on foot again!
2 things here that take me back, the last car I owned in the UK 10 years ago was a Y reg Cuore + that had the EJ-DE smoke problem and also had an occasional power loss issue. The other thing, having a Cuore here in Australia, as on the Sirion here too, the indicator switch is on the right, not on the left as in the UK.
Lovely little car, send the lady some flowers and chocolates x
That’s a great gesture for someone to give you this car free of charge, there are still some generous people in the World. The wee Daihatsu is a pretty rare sight on our roads nowadays. I’m interested to see how you get on with it. A great vlog.😊
I know I have dropped the channel name 2stroketurbo on you before, (I believe it was a clients' Delica Super Exceed) but he recently acquired a Figaro (RHD). After a prior botched engine rebuild, he had to pull some shavings from the oil pump and set it for more pressure. Then fuddle through some horribly out of whack valve adjustments to 'dial it in.' Still a work in progress it's a nice series of close looks at this car.
As a born and bred south Londoner, this collection caper did make me chuckle!
Ive driven all these roads so many times.
Another great video looking forward to your adventures driving Miss Daisy! You just couldn't refuse her!!!
I did Worcester to Wick in the 2CV on the same day. Took 13hrs to do 600 miles. I often did Aberdeen to Worcester/ Worcester to Aberdeen, 450 miles, in the 2CV when I lived in the Shetland Islands. Best time I did was 7 1/2 hours.
Ooh I'm jealous- thats tidy. Your old yellow Sirion persuaded me into a Cuore (been with the channel from wayy back) - those Daihatsus are such fun little cars that thrum their heart out and make you smile... I'd love another.
I miss my cuore it was a plasticky thing but it was like a roller skate mine was on a t reg in a humbug green colour
I always liked these cars and nearly bought one a few years ago (also automatic)... Regret not doing so! Look forward to seeing the future adventures you'll have together.
I can absolutely see why you had to give Miss Daisy a home. What a great example of a Sirion and for free too. I wonder if we'll see her get the magic Hubnut wax treatment to protect all that welding?
This takes me back. My mum had one for 14 years. I will now list everything that went wrong during that time.
1;....?......nothing, just nothing.
It was extremely reliable. It was always serviced on time and I cleaned it every fortnight. Mum was as blind as a bat, but strangely could detect a dust mark at 300 meters.
I love the Sirion. Mums was the 989cc auto. Great car except that I didn't like the dashboard. I way, prefer the face lift model. Better dashboard and cutest of the variation.
I would own one in a heart beat. A simple no fuss no issue little runabout.
I also owned your model Charade. I adored those as well. I'm tall and the Charade was easier to get in and out of. But I didn't like the ride. It was bouncy and harsh. But what amazing packaging for a small car. Very clever design.
Congratulations @Hubnut on your new car. Our 2005 Sirion is a firm favourite. The little engine in Miss Daisy sounds glorious.
I don't think there's ever a McDonald's on the face of the planet where the milkshake machine is working when you want a milkshake.
Lives in Wales, buys a car that can't go up hills. What could possibly go wrong?
Nice little car, lovely colour, just disappointed there was no drama on the long drive home!
Something juicy like a snapped alternator belt, blown radiator, terminal autobox failure, thrown piston etc
Not even so much as an intermittent misfire or failed bulb!
All we got was a slightly malfunctioning passenger door mirror!😲⚠️😳😁👍
Love your cheerful, chatty, relaxed approach to driving in London. I would be petrified. Looks a clean car, but you paid too much!
Absolutely brilliant video Ian 👍what a beautiful looking car and auto that's even more luxury brilliant
Lovely Little Car ...I'll be getting outta London too very soon ..enjoy Miss Daisy
Yes. Sirion. New fun times start here 😀.
Only a proper Gentleman would think of cutting-in as 'bad form' and driving around to join the queue properly. If we could all be so considerate on the roads, traffic would flow more quickly with fewer accidents.
As soon as he said 'It's an automatic' I thought 'No wonder it doesn't like to go up hills'!!
Here we go...AGAIN! Chuckle chuckle. This is why we luv Hub Nut. 😂
It could just be that the transmission needs a fluid change & filter, depending on how long it's been. That's IF the fluid dynamics are sub par. I must say, its pretty impressive for the displacement and the amount of power you lose to an auto gearbox.Cheers !
Possibly the only motoring channel when a Nissan Serena causes more excitement then a 911.
What a little sweetie. Miss Daisy I mean. Congrats on a problem free caper
The wait is killing me!
Whatever it is, I have no doubt its going to be extremely entertaining to watch be fixed 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣probably.
waiting for this to premiere there is a real feeling of excitement!! 😂😂😂😂😂
When you said you were picking up a car that didn't like hills, I was imagining the queue behind you on the Severn crossing! That car looks like a little peach!
Oh I do like a good adventure, very enjoyable video Ian thank you
That car is so so HubNut! Great acquisition!
Interesting video even without any issues, you are a brave man, greeting from Spain.
Put it in D and leave it in D until you park up. Changing into N or P at traffic lights etc defeats the object and actually increases wear on the gearbox (as the manual for my BMW even tells you).
This car isn't happy idling in D, so definitely something amiss. Your BMW may actually neutral drop automatically - some more modern gearboxes do, so it isn't trying to push through the brakes.
Seriously for fun little autos you need to drive a micra k11 1.3 or 1.4 gx auto as the manual versions are slower than London traffic.
I've driven a Citroën C3 1.2 82bhp 2016 on the A1 feels at home at 55mph.
Beautiful car
Really odd that emission charge certain cars are allowed some aren't, one car I found odd is the Mazda RX8 is exempt 🤣 they are thirsty for oil and fuel but apparently more cleaner then other cars
I know this is a car channel. but I admit to enjoying the parts like the trip into London as I have never been there.
I absolutely love the Silly One! And Brixton?? Jesus you're brave 😅
Kitchen cloth and WD40 can often recover wiper blades. Just keep applying and wiping until the black stops coming off 👍.
16:57 you was entering Clapham common southside from Cavendish rd 😎... Welcome to London Mr Hubnut .
I could have just fast forwarded to the car reveal, but your content never bored me for a second.
That's a tidy train journey mate ! Can't wait to see this !
Yay! It’s just like the old days. I used to enjoy these “will he get home” capers
