    I’ve gotta say, this cluster is super impressive! Functional prints/prototyping is what originally got me into 3D printing, and it’s awesome to see when it comes together in a build like this. Seeing content like this makes me all giddy 😂. I never would have thought of using inset nuts like that with a soldering iron. Just found your channel and i´m glad i did, just my cup of tea. Automotive, 3D printing and mechanical design is my main hobby. You did an awesome interpretation of a classic JDM interior. I hope to see more of that in your channel and to see you grow. A tip. you mentioned that you were worried about the inserts and that they would distort the plastic. Try making the threads directly in Fusion. In a place like that, it is overkill to put inserts anyway. The plastic is stronger than you think and you can make thinner fasteners when you don't have to consider the inserts.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  Рік тому

      That's a great point on threading directly into the print. I think with how small they were, printing them round and tapping them might've worked better than printing M3/M5 threads, but I haven't really tried it to know. You're right they're not loaded at all, so probably would've worked just fine! Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you like the rest of the series!

    • @tomsondesign
      @tomsondesign Рік тому

      @@GrindhousePerformance When i started with 3D printing i used inserts on everything regardless of size or plastic quality. You can do M2 threads in Fusion if you have decent layerheight and nozzle. I didn´t belive it either until i tried. These days if i want it stronger i often use nutpockets from the other side so i sandwished the plastic. And thats also cheaper:) The time i use inserts is when i want to assemble and disassemble many times or i want it strong but don´t want to see a nutpocket. You have interesting idéas and good eye for design so i gonna follow you bec. i want to see more :) Good luck with your project.

      @GrindhousePerformance  Рік тому

      Hey thanks so much. This project is a huge huge accomplishment for me and I'm really happy how it all came out. I printed this on an Ultimaker S3, but I think the results really came from the Matterhackers NylonX filament. The way it flows when you get it dialed in makes the surface finish look absolutely stunning for an FDM printer. I haven't really used rivet nuts in 3D printing (rather, rivet nutting the 3D printed parts) because I figured the pressure from the rivet would crack the plastic, or that it would loosen over time. I've used rivet nuts on metal panels, then used those to bolt 3D prints down, but haven't personally tried riveting directly onto the plastics.

    My 3d printer seems pretty inconsistent. One big problem I've noticed is that the taller an object is, the worse the top layers seem to bond. It's really disappointing for as long as 3d printing takes. I have an enclosure....and a filament dryer (that I still need to use.) I would love to see a video about how to overcome certain issues and how to identify them.

      That's interesting, so you're saying your adhesion between layers get worse as the print gets taller? That sounds like maybe your individual layers aren't printing as "thick" as the printer thinks they are, so the higher it goes, the further the nozzle actually is vs. where it thinks it is? Is it dependent at all on the geometry you're trying to print? Vases vs thick wall?

      @@GrindhousePerformance I've had issues both ways. It's been a long time since I've used the printer because of it. I did some cubes to verify (and adjust) setting so my dimesions were correct. I thought it might have been that the higher layers were too far from the heated bed, so they'd cool off too fast and not bond properly. Kind of sit on top of the previous layer, instead of squish together, does that make sense?

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  Рік тому +1

      @@jayinmi3706 that might suggest your nozzle temp is too low, if the bed is contributing to there being enough heat in the part for layer adhesion. The bed heat's only really meant for keeping the first layer adhered, but the heat it generates can definitely impact other layers. Maybe bump up your nozzle temp some? Depending on your printer it might struggle maintaining target temperature. If the filament calls for like 250 and you're only -actually- giving it 220 you'd definitely have issues

      I think it's more of a characteristic of Matterhackers NylonX than anything else, but I printed at 265*, 98.5% flow, 0% cooling, 255* initial print temp, 90* bed temp, minimum layer time of 35 seconds, with a small outer wipe and coasting adjustments. I did not use fuzzy skin settings or anything like that to get the surface result. The parts look incredible in person, I would've never imagined that kind've surface quality out of an FDM printer.

      The cluster was built for my personal car. It's not really something I would sell with how complicated the whole mess of it is. I think the keyboard & gauge designs have changed as well so I'm not sure it could be remade even if I wanted to

      It’s not that I wanted to buy it. It was just that I wanted to see the finished product, given the title of this video. It felt very anticlimactic at the end without seeing the fruits of your labour.

      @@GrindhousePerformance Good to know. So only use "we" when you really mean multiple people. It's totally fine/safe/legal to use "I" when it really applies. Office environments and big corporations have taught people to never use "I" and give the credit to "the team". Nope, if that isn't what happened then I'm not saying it.
