Andrew
Check this out, Iron Maiden drummer introducing his new tour drum kit: ua-cam.com/video/hAZePHk9zvc/v-deo.html
One of the best books I ever read was called "Talent Is Overrated" The premise of the book was essentially that doing the long, hard, (that's what she said) boring work is what makes people great and thats why so few people achieve it. It takes thousands and thousands of hours to master something and it isn't fun hours. This guy has clearly put the time in! Great video as always mate!
Drum Teacher: playing on one surface is a lot different than floor tom, much more difficult...
Ricardo: Blast beats on a bowl on water... With brush...
HAHAHA!
Did anyone else catch the start ? "Hey Hey Andrew. It is UA-cam here." LOL :)
At 2:00 he is practicing his Benny Hill.
That dude is a machine!!! On a side note, whenever you say the word "practice" you should edit in the Allen Iverson "We talkin' about practice??!!" clip! And if you don't know it, look it up it's an hilarious press conference with Allen Iverson getting hammered by the media because he didn't go to practice....... Also, you're creeping up to 100k subs! You'll be there in no time, congrats!!
Practice??? Are you talking about practice!????
C'mon, his name is 'Merlin'-i. And he looks like a magician. Time-travelling wizard confirmed.
🤣🤣👌
The "That's what she said" audio gags just killed me this time, Andrew. So funny. :-)
🤣🤣👌
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Fwiw I think the harder side of the Real Feel is meant to mimick the feel of a cymbal.... at least that's how I use it.
If I'm working on a particularly difficult ride or hi hat pattern I use the black side of the pad. I find it much easier to transfer new ride and hi hat patterns over to the kit when i use the black side than I did when I would use the softer, spongier side.
The Merlini motion is actually driven by a micro-rotation of the wrist (the "tremble"), while the fingers act as force absorption more than anything. Finger control is important, and though he did develop his finger technique to around 200bpm with unacccented singles, it was impossible for him to go further without tendon issues. Same with wrist issues using Moeller. He still uses both in his groove playing though.
First reaction reading the video title : couldn't care less. Watch the video anyway because I love Andrew, and blown away.
Thanks for watching!! 🙏
Guy sounds like a sowing machine!!
I couldn't find it if you have done it before but I'd love to see your reaction to Chris Dave - Medley (Pt. 2). Unfortunately the youtube video has been muted but its available in lots of other places if you google it.
'Hello Andrew it's UA-cam here' - if this is deliberate, I love it. If it's not, I love it. Keep up the awesome videos!!
That's for you to know and me to find out
Yup, he's got speed mastered, but also timing. Lord Marco is ANOTHER speed monster like Riccardo.
For me Lord Marco is the best drummer out there atm. Been wanting andrew to do a reaction to him for ages.
It's not at all close to in time when fast. Also, speed is boring... once ya have it. He drums kinda boring stuff...
The" When the leavy breaks" beat in the backround had me jammin out 🤣🤣
My local woodpecker would be jealous of that speed.
🤣🤣
He's a wizard Andy
The great Merlini
It is my belief that Mr. Merlini Has an above natural ability with both his wrist and Fingers that honestly very few of us will ever be able to achieve
Agreed
That's what she said 😊
I've seen an interview with a different drummer who did something similar, the trick was, he would use his middle, ring, and pinkey fingers one after another, some crazy dexterity
I believe I was seeing his fingers doing some of that in this video. I've seen other videos of him a while ago and I don't remember noticing that. I also think he does the slightest twitch in his wrist that I noticed. Micro movements I guess
Great!¡!! 😁🥁
Crazy stuff! 🤯
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yeah!!! 😜
He has full control of the motion throughout. His fingers are each in contact with the stick on each stroke, and he is using the wrist motion to keep the power and endurance high. It's truly a hybrid of wrist/fingers. Anyone who has attempted speeds above 220bpm knows that using ONLY wrists or ONLY fingers will kill your endurance. Having said that, I still have no f***ing clue how a human being can physically move sticks that fast for such extended periods. It breaks my brain. I still remember when 200 bpm was considered blazing fast. 😆
Ramon montagner Push pull technique.
Riccardo himself has shown and said that it's pretty much exclusively a wrist driven technique he's using
It's 99% forearm rotation. He openly discusses his technique in a video on here.
Now we're talking .
When a dude can do singles 3 times faster than your doubles. I'm not bitter. 😳
MADNESS
Also the grey side is for the feel of a drum. The black side is to resemble the feel of cymbals.
He is doing 16th notes at low tempos. In the world of metal drum we say how fast we can go only considering 8th notes. This means that he is almost at 400bpm... Which no person ive seen.. Is even close to. Check out Netchan...
ua-cam.com/video/Inzlch-1RWw/v-deo.html
Gray side almost like drum, black side for marching drummers who use tight heads..
Cleared up
Yeah, this is nuts, but it's a lot more fun to see him actually play a song and utilizing this technique.
Very kiwi with the flight of the Conchords clip
🤣👌🇳🇿
Waiting on the TWSS counter 😉
Wax Simulacra by The Mars Volta is a tune you should check out. There are a couple of live videos that will blow your mind
Even in the fast sections, he says he uses the wrist, but with a smaller, sideway ish motion. He said it tokk him a few weeks! LOL
🤯🤯😮
"Heyy, what is up Andrew, UA-cam here"😂😂😂
HAHA!
You got me Michael :)
The Human hummingbird/drumming bird
🤣👌
There are plenty more videos of him, like high speed both hands on a Coke bottle cap
Oh buddy that Craviatto/DW is tasty and gorgeous 😍
Yes Chris! My good friend is a collector. No way I could afford it 🤣👌
He's also played slapped water really fast (it was either slapping or with brushes).
He's blasting the water!!!!
😮🤯
In Ricardo's other videos he states that it took him 2 weeks to work to to the speed that he gets. I'm thinking that it's taken me 50 years and I'm still not close with two hands to what he can do with one hand. LOL. He has an online course on Udemy that I've just begun watching. I also enjoyed the video he did where he's with Thomas Lang and he basically gives Thomas a quick lesson on her technique. Still, two weeks to get that fast... He's super human!
Drummers love him,
Women fear him...
Then love him
Looks like he cycles through his fingers as he plays
Very well said. I didn’t mention that 👌
look at more videos, his techniques uses wrist and fingers or he would not be able to do the same with brushes on water and other non bouncy surfaces, check that out its on video
Would STRONGLY recommend checking out Clay Aeschliman’s play through of Polyphia’s new track “Playing God”. Absolutely mesmerizing!
Oh that guy is GREAT Trevor!!!
Hey Andrew,
are you located in Melbourne? (Asking this for a possible young lady's birthday present in october, this year.)
I'm sitting here in Germany. With no clue when I'll be able to make it down under, again.
(Not giving away too much: lil' lady became a fan of hard rock @ the age of 8. Metal @ the age of 10.
I've been a "guide", ever since. But I'm not a musician. Just an old fan of rock music, born in 1960.)
@@Tim091 O.K. Thank you! Are you familiar with "Antoinette Emily"? A kiwi, living in Germany?
Of course the student of Mike Mangini has hand speed beyond the realms of necessity
Also it may not look like it but his technique is primarily a wrist movement with some fingers added
Love it
Mike didn't show him this... and can't do it.
@@morbidmanmusic I never said that Mike did show him this nor that he himself is able to do it. ^^
You have to push for that speed with the wrist
Italians have the fastest drummers in the world without a doubt haha. And among the best too, easily
I don't know who I remember when. I see him! 🤔🤔🤔😏😏😏😊
This is ridiculous! What even just happened?!
Hey...?!
Has Riccardo uploaded any covers, or original work?
Yes. Check it out in his channel.
I love all your videos & comment on most. Check out Thomas Lang sometime. Absolute speed demon!
He has, and Lang has been done to death. Cold fast and boring.
Guy sounds like a sowing machine
Haha Terry! 🤣🤣
The only rudiment I can even get close to that is a crush roll.
I’m not even in this universe 🤣🤣
@@AndrewRooneyDrums me either, I a word- Unbefreikinleavable!-
After 60 years of playing I can not do that!
None of us can!
Please react to Gianlucca Pellerito
….practice 13 stroke singles all with no wrist but only 3rd and 4th fingers….give it time but stay at it……thanks for video.
Look at the difference between Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich, Gene played in alot of marching bands, Buddy didn't both were great Drummer's but we're completely different styles. Thnx!!👍👍
Nice!
This Guy need to buy a Faster camera lol !!!!
YES! LOL
Mike mangini is the only other drummer can do this theirs no one faster as far as I know
It is mostly wrist he shows that in his videos.
Senza accento,Riccardo Merlini.
The noise reduction on your microphone kills the entire quality. You got a 400 dollar mic, don't screw with it's quality.
Step 1: Treat your room (i.e. tackling the problem at the source)
Step 2: get yourself a Cloudlifter CL-1. This will help your interface preamp cope with the extremely low output of an SM7B (meaning less noise)
Step 3: Do a bit of research on voice over EQ en compression.
Step 4: carefully gate the signal (preferably have the gate before the compressor and don't let the gate cut the signal of entirely, just let it reduce the volume by let's say 12dB. Not really a gate anymore, rather an expander.)
Hope this helps.
You need to be my engineer!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums It would be a pleasure!
Mike mangini his teacher explains that, its not his fingers. Thats what he said but i don't care its imposible for me fingers or what
its wrist and fingers comined ... you can see the wrist movement ;) its just tiny
this also requires I.Q. for that
He’s a terminator robot, skynet is real. I’m out
There is a clip on Drum channel he explains his technique amazing drummer But speed isn't everything Donati has the speed and dexterity It like you can be the fastest guitar player but if you don't have anything else to offer l not interested. Neil Peart wasn't the fastest drummer but his technique and precision and imagination was 2nd to none
what about Jo Jo Meyer
This is the push pull technique developed by Buddy Rich
THE LIMITS OF THIS TECHNIQUE
1. You cannot add any accents
2. You cannot do any other pattern besides singles (I.e paradiddle, doubles, etc)
3. You cannot add dynamics
4. You cannot play it clean (one hand at the time he can control it…but when you hear both hands in slow motion -try it at 25% speed- it sounds atrocious….almost like a bad shuffle,
Ummmm, current fastest drummer is Tom Grosset, who broke Mike Mangini's world record of 1203 single strokes in 1 minute in 2006. He beat it by 5 strokes in 2013. Tom is an "extreme sport drummer" and I don't know much more about him. Meanwhile, Mike Mangini is still the current record holder for bare hand single stroke roll at 1138 strokes in 60 seconds.
So, unfortunately, Riccardo, isn't even the second fastest.
I recommend you go review Mike's drumming. He's played with Extreme, worked with Steve Vai, been an associate professor at Berklee School of Music, played on the "Subdivisions" Rush Tribute album, and is currently with the band Dream Theater.
Merlini studied under Mangini.
Thank you!! 🙏
Lol also Mangini has a record of 1247 in a minute and as mentioned before he taught Merlini. Italians man, cheating I tell ya
Not sure how that speed can be useful in real music though.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. It’s a cool parlor trick, but seems entirely pointless with respect to music.
I believe he is a fantastic kit player so I look forward to seeing him play
Exactly. What is the connection between unbelievably fast single strokes and playing music? Nothing. This is a fantastic exhibition of manual dexterity, the guy is amazing; but I don't consider it music.
Really amazing. However, I cannot equate speed as great drumming. How much better would your band sound if you could play single strokes that fast? When I started playing drums in the 1960s so many experienced drummers would tell me, "Develop your ears, listen to everything, that's the most important thing." How do hours and hours of developing speed develop your feel for music? In fact, I think bad drumming is when drummers paste their chops onto the music. Like the music exists for showing how fast and complicated you can play. When metronome settings become the soul of your drumming, there ain't no soul.
Good robotic reflexes. But... where's the music?
He has plenty of videos where he plays to songs
dislike nomas por la burla al nombre de ricardo, auqune lo explico me vale vrg xF
ok, so he can mimic a wood pecker. Now what? There is literally no musical situation, aside from extreme metal, where that is at all useful.
The fast roll is just a mess though.. not st all in any time frame.
TIENE DE LAS MEJORES TÉCNICAS DEL MUNDO.. PERO.. QUE DISCO HIZO? CUAL ES LA MÚSICA QUE CREO?
