- "Third World Man"
Johnny's playroom
Is a bunker filled with sand
He's become a third world man
Smoky Sunday
He's been mobilized since dawn
Now he's crouching on the lawn
He's a third world man
Soon you'll throw down your disguise
We'll see behind those bright eyes
By and by
When the sidewalks are safe
For the little guy
I saw the fireworks
I believed that I was dreaming
Till the neighbors came out screaming
He's a third world man
Soon you'll throw down your disguise
We'll see behind those bright eyes
By and by
When the sidewalks are safe
For the little guys
When he's crying out
I just sing that Ghana Rondo
E l'era del terzo mondo
He's a third world man
Such a beautiful, perfect song. Great way to end one of their best albums (maybe THEE best).
R.I.P., Mr. Becker.
FASCINATING album. Aja was fascinating, too.
Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho...back-to-back-to back.
The lead by Larry Carlton is almost too good. I don't want to song to end.
played this album a million times since 1980.
me too! & i know why - not just larry carlton - just the song and the band that steely dan invisitioned!
I'M SO fucking glad there are people out there who appreciate this band (and their not so famous songs) as much as I do
With you on that
Have been loving them and their music since the 70's.....I'm almost 66 now....Greetings from Trento, Italy
Me too I love steely dan. Always have and always will. Absolute class
No one and I mean No One puts out music like this now. Gone forever. Such a shame.
Those chords that accompany the phrase "Soon you'll throw down your disguise..." always give me goosebumps.
yes
This is a song I overlooked in my youth when the album was first released. Today, this is a song I simply can't get enough of. The minor chords, the impeccable guitar genius of Larry Carlton, the hauntingly prophetic lyrics by Fagan...I just close my eyes and let it soar.
@TCA, you and I think just alike. I have a lot of favorite Dan songs but this one, is special.
I'm a 73-year-old great-grandmother and I have just started revisiting steely Dan whole new meaning to his songs
Same here ,I overlooked this song and now I can't get enough of it ,one of their best
This is how pure music should sound.
The quality of Steely Dan is till this day unmatched.
This has all the qualities of the best Steely Dan songs - a relaxing, haunting melody that always seems to trip you up just as you think you have figured it out, and lyrics that you almost sort of understand, even though you have actually no idea what it's all about.
me too! However - the changes, the fantastic musicians & make this an unforgettable song - Why isn't there a place on UA-cam to say "YES! i am listening to this for the 600+ time??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Yes, their melodies would always go in a direction that would surprise me.
OMG , I've been listening to Steely Dan since 1976. THIRLD WORLD MAN ! ONE OF MY FAVOURITES!!! WOW ! LARRY CARLTON SOLO IS SUBLIME!!!
No words , just tears flowing from my eyes, DEEP RESPECT to STEELY DAN & everyone who contributed musically to ALL OF THEIR ALBUMS!
RIP WALTER.
I was a Jr in high school when this album came out and i can't believe how the yrs have passed 1980. This album is still as great as it was when the 1st time i played it. Start it and let it play to the end. The musical stars whom have played with Donald Fagen and Steely Dan music greatness! I still love it all.
Is it just me but does this song bring anyone else to tears?
No
Why would it?
@@knifelyfe6565 because it's so beautiful...
@@jeffreguett1511 it is that for sure.
Yes, it’s very moving a brilliant song. Apparently it’s about a War Veteran.
Aja & Gaucho are the best 2 Steely Dan albums of all time
NO Question
I can't argue with that statement.
The Royal Scam is right up there amongst the best.
In this 74 year old dude's humble opinion, Larry Carlton's haunting solo ride is, perhaps, his finest work, and if memory serves me, the entire song was built around it. It will never, ever get old.
Agreed. "Don't Take Me Alive" and " Larry's "Room 335" aint too shabby either.
Spot on dude
The last song on the last Steely Dan album before their hiatus. What a powerful piece of music---and Larry Carlton taking it out is perfection.
That solo...makes you see HEAVEN! Another dimension...you name it!
Cannot get this song out of my head, it plays over and over. The guitar work is magnificent and unparalleled, puts chilly bumps on my arms every time I hear it.
Two years later and I know exactly what you mean John. It haunts me
Same. I've put this tune on endless repeat while out in the shop working, then had it play through my head all the next day. When you get an earworm it's usually a tune you hate, but this certainly is not one of them.
so do I, by and by
All Larry Carlton's solos do that.Checkout Joni Mitchell "Help Me" Thats Larry too.
Happy Listening!
Something about this song makes me cry and I'm a grown man. So hauntingly beautiful. Carlton's guitar is OMG!
You're forgiven. Child soldiers --that's a topic that *should* make one cry.
We can find safe haven for the third world man . Is there gas in the car Yes there is gas in the car
For those wondering about the lyrics, at least the stanza which repeats twice, "Soon you'll throw down your disguise We'll see behind those bright eyes By and by...." is an allusion to the Goddess, Athene, in the Odyssey, who would disguise herself to mortals in the poem, at times, and was referred to as, " Bright eyes". " By and by", is a term used as well in the poem.
thank you.....
Mr. Fagen and Mr. Becker weaving another of humankind's fallicies into a classic masterpiece !
This beat is so loose and slimey! I love it. Man
*slimy
I'm no expert, but I think it's a 2/4 beat. Very unusual. Becker and Fagan were geniuses
Larry Carlton's solo at 1.43 is the most beautiful guitar solo ever recorded, in my opinion. Rumour has it the whole song was built around it!
+David Nilsson could not agree more that key shift is just pure ear candy
And the little coda solo starting at 3.53's not too shabby either...
you're right. it's fascinating. Been in my mind since this album first came out in 1980. So amazing growing up with such beautiful music , forever in my mind. :)
Spot on!
I get emotional listening to that. I totally share your opinion--most beautiful guitar solo ever. This whole album kills it.
A true gem. Vastly underappreciated.
Larry Carlton's soulfully crunchy outro on this song could go on forever and I'd still not get enough.
This. Song. I have to listen to it 3 or 4 times, EVERY time. Brilliant.
!me too!!!
Each and every time I put in the plugs, close my eyes and listen to the genius that is TWM, it reminds me that what the boys did back then transcended anything that had been written and performed up 'til then. It's impossible to try to categorize, explain, or musically describe its brilliance and the emotion that it creates. Like a child's bedtime lullaby, you don't want it to ever end.
you are so right1
Will never cease to listen to old Steely Dan...
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were national treasures.
"A Steely Dan Bedtime Story"
Once upon a time, there was a king, named Richard, who ruled Mizar. He fell madly in love with his darling, Rose. After a short engagement, they were married by a Deacon in a blue suit. They honeymooned near the caves of Altamira and did it again quite frequently without a fez. Night after night, it was a countdown to ecstasy. Soon, they were home at last, and Rose and King Richard, in the months and years to follow, would have a castle full of show biz kids. Their first kid, a boy, was named Charlemagne. Later, daughters, Josie and Peg, would beautify the castle with their French twists. Rikki, their youngest, was a mathematics prodigy who never lost track of her numbers. The parents were strict with their daughters, but the girls didn't seem to care. The family would vacation by carriage to the sea and when the children got too loud, King Richard would say, "keep it down, just until we get out of town." During their holiday, the family would sit under a banyan tree and watch the sun go down on the crimson tide. They let the children play up on the hill near the black cows. The king, however, had a mistress at this seaside Eldorado resort. When confronted by Rose, Katy lied and said there was nothing to it. Katy was only nineteen at the time. Rose knew the fix was in. Later, Rose told King Richard that she knew of the affair and was planning on a trip to Haiti for a divorce. She said, "I can't cry anymore while you run around." Upon hearing this news, King Richard summoned his therapist, Dr. Wu. After a lengthy discussion about the king's infidelity, Dr. Wu responded, "the things you think are useless I can't understand." Rose, still reelin' from this news demanded, "I want to know everything you did." King Richard confessed to an affair with Katy's sister, Pearl. He defended himself by saying, "it was just a fling with a couple of skinny girls." King Richard hastily had his family return to Castle Bravo, coincidentally, at the changing of the guard. He met with his generals to discuss the expansion of his kingdom to new frontiers. He told them he wanted to be king of the world. Rose, however, took a gift from the king, a pair of green earrings, and threw them in the moat. She realized that she had been royally scammed. King Richard went to Rose's bedroom and told her it would never happen again, but she replied, "after what you've done, only a fool would say that." She gave him the goodbye look before she lit the candle and put a lock upon the door. King Richard, in a rage, threatened harm to their children by drowning them in the moat when he said, "I'll throw back the little ones." At that very moment, there was fire in the hole as the castle came under ambush by battle apples! King Richard became suicidal and thought about taking his life with a gun. His last words were, "Don't Take Me Alive!" The day after the king's demise, Rose had lunch with Gina, her best friend. They drank kirschwasser from a shell. Gina advised Rose to sell her home and move to a place called the Custerdome. The next day, Rose put a sign in front of the castle that read: Everything Must Go.
"I saw the fireworks, I believed that I was dreaming/
Till the neighbors came out screaming, he's a third world man"
Holy wow, this line gets me everything. The brilliance of SD's lyrics can never be understated. These two lines, you can read into at an amazing depth.
Usher's missing you brought me here....wow...Steely Dan is the truth!
At 1:43. Coolest sample from Missin' U from Hard II Love
Same here. I thought it was music Usher or someone else wrote. Then I looked up the information of that song at Wikipedia and noticed Steely Dan's lead singer Donald Fagen's name in the songwriter's credits. And it said it was a sample from this song.
God I feel old listening to you guys comments.
Pamela Walker ha, Usher and the like couldn't write a song this great if you drew them a map. Of course they had to sample (steal) it.
Pamela Walker FUCK usher Usher
these are one of those songs that I like to hear on rainy days....
& i like to hear, or need to hear, every day
Steely Dan, one of the most complex, talented and mesmerizing bands of all-time.
Two people have no soul! How could you not like Carltons playing on this cut and Fagens haunting vocals. It just doesnt get any better!
They sold their Souls for rock n roll
haven't we all? but not sure it is r&r - it is what it is - their own take!!!!!!!!@@danielvasquez8830
sm ppl dont like the drum track or the too-produced sound
@@rickdeckard1075 lol silly comment.First of all that's Steve Gadd on drums. One of the greatest drummers and most sought after studio guys on the planet.Hes played with everybody just like Larry Carlton has.Next this album got a Grammy for Best Engineered Album.Fagen and Becker are perfectionist in the studio. They use all studio guys, cut the songs with different players and pick out the best tracks.People are stupid.
Truly beautiful song from an album that’s with me always.
Well spoken.
this is the sweet spot about sampling music...you'll discover diamonds in the shadows.
This is another exceptional effort with some of the best session guys going and each in his prime. Larry Carlton, Mark Knopfler, Valerie Simpson, Randy & Michael Brecker, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Khan, Rick Marotta and on & on. An interview I watched had one 1st class session player coming in to the studio, doing one track & leaving. On the way out, another whole band of session players coming in, most likely to do the same track again, as Walter & Donald were renowned for finding the 'right fit'. For me, there is no better example of using the best player for the part than Larry Carlton's guitar on 'Third World Man'. A perfect fit. RIP Walter Becker. Thank you for your contribution to music.
The fade out is sublime, it wraps you up and takes you away off into the unknown and dark blue night-time distance. I used to set this album on and listen all the way through, it would take me off into a deep sleep...the guitar work is just amazing, and of course Steve Gadd and his musicality.
Is this your favorite Steely Dan song?
@@edwardsholar9730 -don't you know that every time most of us listen to Steely Dan - whatever is playing is our favorite song? it shifts from the time of day, the weather, the news, the book we are reading, our mood, if we are hungry, tired, happy...this has been going on for years and years. you asked earlier what was my favorite song and Deacon Blues was playing and so that was the answer and this sounds wishy-washy, but i am not that way.. I hope you are feeling much better about your situation. Take care..........

I like to hear people's answers to the question. Did you get my Steely Dan America the Beautiful?
Haven't heard this in so long. There was a time when I felt this was the quintessential Steely Dan song. It left me with a lingering melancholic hole in my stomach.
EVERYTHING Larry Carlton plays kills me everytime! Thanks for posting this!
nosaintntx Carlton makes his guitar SING during his solo, turning what could've been a rather mundane bit of music into absolute gold!
Top 5 guitar solos of all time
In an achingly beautiful song full of incredible chord changes, the one at 3:45 is maybe my favorite one in the entire SD canon. It kills me every time.
Same here..just achingly beautiful as said..and I keep listening to it over and over and over again
notanumber6 I never noticed that before !
notanumber6 i
Yeh that move at that moment always intrigued and enlivened moi, I guess it’s surprise major move moment musically! Cos Donald knows his stuff musically it works whereas with others it wouldn’t! I always wished him and Dudley Moore and Larry Carlton or Robben Ford had made an album.
I fully agree that change @3:45 is the moment you feel the planets align - magical melancholy and your ears cannot help but light up with Larry Carlton's gift to us.
Stunning song and lyrics.
A masterpiece. Really more like a requiem.
Sheer perfection. I cannot listen to this song without crying. The tune just pulls something out of me, speaks to my soul.
Sublime. There's just nothing else that describes it for me better than that word.
Powerful....Profound......Always special
A unique song in their book. No sarcasm. No irony. No pithy observation. Just anguish. And a guitar solo for the ages.
it's not the only one.
Sure, I'll jump in months after most of these comments. Problem is finding adjectives that haven't already been used. On the Dan Fans FB page the question was asked what was the best guitar in any of their songs and I said hands down Third World Man. There are many others worthy of consideration and I'm not going to name them here, but Larry Carlton's haunting chords and key changes are almost hypnotic. And to think how many music lovers out there have, perhaps, never heard the Dan's Gaucho album....that I can listen to everyday and never tire of it. It is genius, period.
+ Jack Weiss...Gaucho is one of the "crispiest" sounding albums I've ever heard!
Just say what and how you FEEL....
It took a long time, but I've come to realise Gaucho is the pinnacle of Steely Dan.
Gadd and Carlton on the song...nuff said. Steely Dan forever!
My youth flashes back at me. I was lucky to have found and appreciated these guys at a young age.,.. When my friends listened to zep and Sabbath.
total guts on your part.......all are good, this is another dimension!!!!!!!!
Larry Carlton is a genius guitar player. "steely dan" would never have been as good without Him!! simply masterful. He grabs each note and beautifies it.. One of my favorites. synchronisity with the trumpets is superb!! song about a veteran who served in the "sand box"!!

Amazing!!
Born in 83, been listening to this since.........when I was a kid, this song always gave my uncle headaches & migrain, now I understand why.......when everything is sooo wrong, it is the right one.
This song! Words can't begin to describe it's beauty! ❤️
For some reason I have always thought the lyrics were about a guy with PTSD but their lyrics are hard to discern. And yes the Carlton solo is one of the greats so much emotion in a solo
Steely Dan, they strove for perfection in the studio which made their music sound so naturally beautiful.
Still gives me goosebumps. Don't know of it's their best but I'm pretty sure it's the most haunting.
yes - how often i go back to this song........
What great talent and outstanding musicians....
why do i listen to Third World Man almost every night??????
So much great music from SD. This is maybe my favorite. Just a haunting and somewhat disturbing, beautiful thing. The guitar is stunning by Larry Carlton. Almost makes me cry every time.
The band can break through so many barriers, although as encrypted that they are.
R.I.P. Walter Becker...
Only 148k views?? Come on SD fans this is possibly the best musical group at their absolute best,
Got this cassette when it first came out1980. PUre masterpiece.
Such a haunting, beautiful song! This was during Donald's "harmony phase" in the early-80s, experimenting with harmonizing his vocals to a deep richness that he would soon "outgrow" in future tracks. For more of this harmony, try "True Companion" on the Heavy Metal soundtrack.
The Night Fly came soon after this too. It always seemed like a natural progression to me, if that makes sense.
Did you know that Double Fantasy beat this album out at the grammys, of course John Lennon had just gotten killed. This album kicks Double Fantasy's ass, sorry John.
It was inevitable Lennon was winning that. It was released right at the end of 80 and of course John was tragically killed. It was a good album but this was perfection. Just like at the 78 Grammy's when Aja was edged out. SD finally won a Grammy in 2001 for 2 Against Nature.
Agnes Philomena Exactly what I was thinking
Agnes Philomena Pink Floyd is trash. I'm tired of people overrating everything with a British accent.
Barry Thompson trash? You really don't know what you're talking about. But as far as people overrating something, I'd add anything in the hip-hop or diva categories to that.
Pawrik word
So good after all those years and my favourite album...Gaucho
Rest in paradise Mr. Becker!
Warning: If you are listening to this for the first time you might not get it. But you will after 50 listens...........
I’m listening to this for the first time at 7:40am on the 12th of March 2021. Sounds ok on first listen but some of the vocals are a bit shaky.
@@alexhamilton4084 He still has a point. The meaning of Steely Dan's songs need far more research. Doesn't happen on your first listen.

that is the bridge!
Lush musical genius, way ahead of their time
Best vocal performance that Fagen has ever recorded.
Amazing song. One of their best. And that guitar player!
Sublime, majestic - Steely Dan's best? Up there with King of the World, Aja, Caves of Altamira, Your Gold Teeth II, Pretzel Logic - all superb!!
True that Bob
Bob Newton Lol. Why niggas think Gold Teeth 2 better than Gold Teeth 1. Lol.
I truly believe this is one of their finest. along with Pretzel Logic (the song) and Home at Last
keep your racist shit off a Steely Dan thread
Gold teeth 2 is good but gold teeth one is perfection and grace
I love the whole song, but the last couple of minutes are serious bliss
The harmonies!!
Perfect for these steadily troubled times....Unfortunately.....
YES!
absolutely superb!!!!!!!!!
..mm Yes had it new....almost wore it out in6 months...Love Lps....Old guy in Oregon...still a fan...Happy halloween..
Incredibly well written, played, and produced- as always! Carlton’s solo slays, and this song is one of their most emotional to me
Both Gaucho and Aja albums are masterpiece's.
I agree wholeheartedly. If you want a good laugh, I wrote "A Steely Dan Bedtime Story." It combines their song titles and lyrics into an amusing tale. It can be found on the first "Do it Again" video on UA-cam in the newest comments. I hope you laugh as much reading it as I did writing it.
At one point Donald Fagen sings a line in Italian: "E' l'era del terzo mondo" which means "It's the 3rd world era"

This tune has to go at the end of any and every Dan listening session.
And yet, another killer song by the best group in history.
There is no match for this music anywhere. And in my opinion, nobody can measure up to Donald Fagen as a singer. He breathes life into these songs.
Musical perfection.Viva Steely Dan
A hard day for The Dan tribe. R.I.P. Walter - with love and gratitude.
Lived in Panama when this was released, of coarse i love it!
Music Masters at work......
I love Larry Carlton's guitar solo in this song. His phrasing is so killer it's orgasmic
Bought or stole this cassette as soon as it came out 1980. Played it so many times it's etch in my brain
Had a mastered at half speed lp in the early 80s. What a beautiful song. The guitar solo is by Larry Carlton.
As a 16 year old I know I’m supposed to be into today’s music but this song is great and have always loved Steely Dan
world class dan!
Truly one of their ultimate masterpieces. Astonishing lyrics, haunting music, and of course that solo. One of the most emotional and powerful moments on their records. I love the ending as well when the chords shift. No one is like the Dan. Genius.
Fagan and Becker...man...
These guys. Thank you.
RIP W.B.
What a sad yet beautiful song. Makes me think of others in this vein: "Caroline, No" by the Beach Boys, or "Try not to Breathe" by REM.
a 10/10 composition
I think a lot of people might miss the metaphor in the lyric Johnnys playroom is a bunker filled with sand, hes been mobilized since dawn now hes crouching on the lawn, they may have been talking about a Professional Golfer.

no fine Colombian? Sorry dude!
So far ahead of their time
Donald Fagen is performing the entire Gaucho album in November of 2019 and my father is attending. I need to find a way there or my life will not be complete.
Didn't Brian Wilson have a bunker filled with sand? Enigmatic and haunting tune with Larry C and Stevie G at their tasteful best. Happy days!
