If you live in Atlanta, Ny, Nj and other cities, find Ghanaian shipping agents who can Shipp all your stuff for you. Its a big mistake to go abroad and try to replicate your life and comforts there. You might as well stay home. Absorb how the locals live. Africa has upper class well healed society too as well as middle class. Observe them if thats your level and you will get an idea of where and how to live based on your budget. But carrying toys etc from USA? Why? Let your kids go and play mix and mingle with locals so they learn the language and culture and hopefully put away tablet and game box !
You've got that right @zev love! If you're going to go to Ghana, live that Ghanaian life!! When we were last there, all my kids could bring were a couple of small toys and a game. They ended up leaving them all with kids they met and had the most fun just playing. Still, as part of the transition, most kids will feel better and transition easier with a few items from home. Still, I love the point of what you are saying. Live that Ghana life, learn the language, and join the community... do NOT try to replicate an American life in Ghana (what's the point). Start with a small ex japanese car import till you get your cashflow right...over the years those storage costs add up..$300 a month after five years is $18,000 spent on storage. I say do garage sale and put everything on ebay ...store a few heirlooms with family..and give away as much as u can. What you save on storage u can buy in Ghana, and use relocation as an opportunity to declutter your life and be minimalist.
@Zev love - We actually lost most everything in Hurricane Harvey (over 4 ft of water in our one story house)... so we've already been forced into minimalism, lol. Good vlogs, I'm Ghanaian currently living in here in the US as far shipping personal items particularly the barrel, it should cost much less than $600 dollars. I just stumbled upon your videos and I've found them very interesting (and fun 😀) and whether or not a person will be specifically going to Ghana a lot of this information can be relatable for really any place outside the US that you'd want to go and live. Thank you so much for sharing. Y'all take care (fellow Texan here 😊).
I went to Ghana in June 2019. I paid $180 for the yellow fever vaccination in Cheyenne Wyoming. I paid $100 for a 2 year visa for multiple entries to Ghana. I was in Ghana for 16 days.
I have a handicap: I use medical equipment to get around like a hemiwalker. And to get around faster longer, I use an electric wheelchair. In 2004 I was shot, I have my medical records. I travel I am part of an organization that focus on traveling, that is located in Texas. I have been to Malabon, Manila, Philippines in 2017. In one of you'lls video you all said the handicap shouldn't move to Ghana. I'm 37; so still go or not?
Perhaps everyone already know that Charles Shawbs checking account is easy to open and they reimbursed all ATM fees globally. Many expatriates use transferwise to transfer money overseas, the fee is lower.
Thank you so much @G Al 😊! We are going to keep trying... just give us a few more weeks and we'll have you packing your bags. lol! Thanks for the comment.
I lived in Ghana for a year and was able to use WorldRemit to transfer money from my Citibank or CapitalOne debit card to my then MTN mobile money account. It was very convenient.
There is a Door to Door shipping agents in the states and across the world which cheaper than how much you guys paid. And with that, you don't have to pay the back duty fees. For instance the drum you guys paid almost 800bucks would be almost 300bucks and weight is not a big deal with the door to door shipping agents. Most of them just charge according to the size of the box or barrel. 🙂
Wishing you all the best. My husband and I are headed to Ghana or Gambia (still undecided) we will make a decision soon. Thank you for breaking down the cost. I have been waiting for a video like this; you are th first that I have seen. Thank you.
Yay... @Meditation Library - Thanks for the love ❤️️! We wanted to put something out there that's what WE would have like to have years ago when we were planning. Gambia or Ghana... great choices 😉 Best of luck!
Sell everything and save the storage fees ($2,880 - $3,600 a year) that tend to go up annually. Clothes, shoes, household goods can be replaced when you return --this will be one less headache to think about... Sell the vehicle and buy new when you get there.... We tend to hold on to “OUR STUFF” (because of what we spent on it), just let it all go and start fresh Both in Ghana and when you return to the USA.
This video was very informative. Preparation is most important. What are good banks there and what is required to open a bank account there? I would limit what I'd bring and purchase locally. What are the average costs of renting a house ? Another handsome kid Rio. Keep making these great, helpful videos to help with transitioning from the states. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! These are great questions @Veronica Purcell. We are going to share our whole process to find a place to live and also share what rents are like when we arrive... so keep watching. For banks, you can actually do a lot more banking using American banks if you are not working in Ghana specifically... just use your debit card or credit card (visa or mastercard, not american express). Otherwise several Ghana banks, like Ghana Commercial Bank, are available and stable. Thanks for the comment ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!
Hello beautiful couple. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story with us. May you share the link to where we may purchase a 3 year visa and multiple entry visa please? Blessings to you both! Ashley
Duties on cars depend on the engine capacity. Anything above 2.4 lit. attracts extra charge so most of the vehicles are around 2.0 lit. Kia and Hyundai SUV diesel are 1.9 lits. North American cars have huge engine capacities so the clearing is expensive so my advice is buy from Europe and ship. Don't hesitate if you have any questions. Hope seeing you in Ghana
@Mickey F - Thanks for that information! I agree that WHERE you ship from can really impact the cost and your ability to maintain the car while in Ghana. Great comment ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!
I love that you both are uncandid about the cost in the reallly of relocating there. A lot of videos we see just speak about how much easier it is there or how affordable it is but they don't discuss would it takes to get there and what you're going to do want sure they are. The information about the car just blew my mind! Guess I would have to sail mine lol. I do appreciate you guys for all of your all of the information you have given. Just sub'ed🤗
There’s door to door where the agents take it and don’t have to pay for duty apart from cars so speak to Ghanaians living in USA and they will put you right

Great video. Very thorough. You really need to have someone dependable to help you on the U.S. side. I'd do it, if I didn't have to do everything myself. You all answered all the questions I had asked in another video. I don't understand the need for a VISA and a passport. Everything cost, so if you have enough loot, you can move.
I am not planning on moving to Ghana, after seeing the true $ costs . There must be better financial alternatives. I will keep looking elsewhere. Thanks for the details. You have a great Vlog channel.

Re: vehicle purchases, a good idea is to contact the various Embassies in Ghana and ask for the vehicle advertisement for departing Dips. Typically, depending on the country, the duties and customs fee expires after X years (Dips import duty-free vehicles) and the POVs are in good shape. Also, don't forget about Embassy vehicle auctions; inexpensive but...you might find a gem.

If you guys are looking at shipping a car, it is well-known that the cars in Texas are pretty much rust-proof. Humidity is high in Ghana as you well know, so things do rust quickly. You may want to upgrade struts, knowing how the roads are in Ghana. Look at SafeBondAfrica, Portside, AutoMasters (vehicle duty calculator), West Coast shipping websites. Best Used Cars to Buy If You Live in a Tropical Climate - www.yourmechanic.com/article/the-best-used-cars-to-buy-if-you-live-in-a-tropical-climate (2015 article but may still apply) Check the classifieds section of the Accra Expat website for diplomats leaving town and offloading their cars. Some of them have duty already paid and they service their cars at Mechanical Lloyd, Toyota, etc. So you will have records. Some of the cars are customized for the tropics. Do your price comparisons with shipping a car of your own from the US. Depending on how soon they are leaving town, you have room to haggle prices down. Look into TravelJohn products. Quality hardware tools are a must if you are tinkerers. Obviously, your electronics should work on 240V or you purchase a step up transformer. You guys have already spent enough time over there, so this information you are already aware of. In the long run, I'm sure someone will set up a shop to cater to Americans in GH. There are daily flights to GH from the USA, so just getting an agreement with Delta to ship these stuff on a daily/weekly basis is a possibility. The turnover just has to be enough to be worth it. As the numbers increase, these gaps will be filled. Note: Blue Skies ships their fresh fruit in the cargo hold of commercial flights heading to Europe every evening and the product is on hotel menus, shop shelves the next morning in the UK and other parts of Europe. The British investor said their turnover was $120 million/year. The interview is on UA-cam. The following farms will sort you out if you are in the Greater Accra area: Hendy Farms, Malom Foods. They have Instagram pages, Google should sort you out when you run a search.

You can check this app from play store or app store called Ghana Trade Hub which you can use to check the duty of the car you are shipping. It gives the amount you will be paying to clear your car from the port.

Although from the UK that this is a very useful video. You brought up points that I didn't even consider so thank you.
Glad it was helpful @Riversflowin 😊!
Awesome- Welcome to the channel ❤️️!
I went to Ghana in June 2019. I paid $180 for the yellow fever vaccination in Cheyenne Wyoming. I paid $100 for a 2 year visa for multiple entries to Ghana. I was in Ghana for 16 days.
Finally nailed the akwaaba

I have a handicap: I use medical equipment to get around like a hemiwalker. And to get around faster longer, I use an electric wheelchair. In 2004 I was shot, I have my medical records. I travel I am part of an organization that focus on traveling, that is located in Texas. I have been to Malabon, Manila, Philippines in 2017. In one of you'lls video you all said the handicap shouldn't move to Ghana. I'm 37; so still go or not?
You guys are great and just have done an excellent job with your videos.

Great info! Especially when it comes to transferring money and credit card suggestions.

Perhaps everyone already know that Charles Shawbs checking account is easy to open and they reimbursed all ATM fees globally. Many expatriates use transferwise to transfer money overseas, the fee is lower.

I lived in Ghana for a year and was able to use WorldRemit to transfer money from my Citibank or CapitalOne debit card to my then MTN mobile money account. It was very convenient.
What a beautiful family! Thanks for sharing this info. Peace and Blessings!!
That jarsy of black stars is on point what a big African team
@UGANDAN BIKER - Love that! Thanks for the comment ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️.
Interesting idea @Evans Ampofo
Fantastic breakdown. Thank you!
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation ❤️️💛💚!
@amilliontubes123 - Love that! Thanks for the comment ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️.
Congratulations to y’all on the move ... it’s interesting to see ppl move to different places around the world... Africa, Mexico & Swiss

Greetings fam thank you 🙏♥️♥️

Here are some sites to check out. www.mobile.de for European cars and for very cheap cars check out autowini.com for Korean cars 👌👌
Car performance is important too. Don't ship an unreliable make and model just to save import fees. You'll regret it in the end.
You are a beautiful family. Good luck with your move.
Aww... @MzBerry28 - Thanks for the love ❤️️!
There’s door to door where the agents take it and don’t have to pay for duty apart from cars so speak to Ghanaians living in USA and they will put you right
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation and helping others navigate their move ❤️️💛💚!
Yes! I was just thinking this. My boyfriend's friend has his own shipping company and his prices are half what they quoted and no duties paid. Have to tap into the network and get connected

Great tip @Tony Tone! I didn't know they had auctions. May be a great way to get something there and not have to chip. Thanks for commenting ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!

Best Used Cars to Buy If You Live in a Tropical Climate - www.yourmechanic.com/article/the-best-used-cars-to-buy-if-you-live-in-a-tropical-climate (2015 article but may still apply)
Check the classifieds section of the Accra Expat website for diplomats leaving town and offloading their cars.

I’m checking out all these videos 👋🏽 Hi guys 💜
I love you guys video! I am going through and binge watching them. I visited Togo and Ghana last year with my boyfriend who is from Togo. We visited Ghana for 3 days total to visit his sister who lives in Ghana. I am curious about health/medical insurance. In the far future i would love to have a condo in Ghana to visit for 3 months once i retire and travel back and forth from togo and ghana. I know my boyfriend would love to retire back home but i personally know the lifestyle of America i am very accustomed and enjoy it to part from it. Next time i would love to visit Ghana longer before i plan to purchase.

The high duty on importation of vehicles is basically to encourage the buying those sold or produced in the country.
