For all those wanting to bring your vehicle older than 10 years old you can now. The Government has shelved the ban for now so bring those clunkers...The local shade tree mechanics are licking their chops!
Really, I thought the 10 year ban was still applicable because it is applied as an extra 10% and more if the cars was more than 10 years. More than 10 years but less than 12 was 12% then it goes up to 15% then 20% depending on the age of your vehicle and its cost value + tax. Not the depreciated value. Also what I heard from the authorities was that the import duty was reduced a bit if you car was very late mode, so the younger your car the less duty based on the value. But I will look into this to find out if this 10 yr ban has actually been lapsed. Because if your vehicle cost less than a $1500 and over 10yrs what is the point shipping it to Ghana and paying fines and huge duty plus shipment costing you maybe near $4000 or more in total. Remember the duty also goes up with regards to your engine capacity. So those V8 engines from 3.8 above are expensive. Usually 2.5litres below are ok but the best to look for are the 2.0 below. Now they even have a new tax on vehicles called luxury tax which applies to vehicles with engine capacity above 2.8 or 3.0 litre correct me if I am mistaken so please you might want to look into that. This is applied upon registration of the vehicle or so but I haven't been through that yet so I would get info on that.

We were just talking about that @GMo G - they have the toll road, but I am not sure what fees and taxes they collect (gross nationally) from auto registration and ticketing as well as the tolls that they can contribute to infrastructure... they need more tho, IMO😉.

VW and Toyota recently set up car assembly plants in Ghana in addition to the local company called Kantanka. It's obvious that VW and Toyota are seeking to take advantage of the Africa Free Trade Area that is hopefully coming into effect next year. I do have to admit that with this kind of competition prices of new cars are falling and with just $13,000-$15,000 you can get yourself a decent brand new car
I saw the roads and I remember thinking that a Ford F-250 would be perfect in not only Ghana but in Africa in general for business and recreational purposes. Too bad you had to sell it.

When my parents left the US for good and moved to Ghana in 2018 , we the children ended up buying a Nissan SUV and shipped it back home for them so their movement back and forth will be easier. Looking back with all the hustle my dad went through with clearing the car at the Tema port, I think we could have just bought a car in Ghana instead. so what we learned form that experience, is that buying a new car at a dealership in Ghana is a much better option.

I just came across your channel and I really enjoyed it! I own a farm in Ghana and I am in the process of shipping a truck to Ghana to be used on my farm. You are right the custom duties are outrageous, but with the cost of the truck, shipping and customs, I would have about $13,000 in it. It is a 4x4 Dodge Ram 1500 with 20 inch wheels. All major parts have been replaced and it's coming with many spare parts and I am a shade tree mechanic lol. Ghana just repealed the law banning vehicles over 10 years old and salvage vehicles. The used car sellers there were up in arms and rightly so, the new law would have put a lot of them out of work and it is election year! So it was shelved. I look forward to watching your upcoming videos. I feel for you my brother having to sell your baby in the States. It will be alright my brother!! Lol. Shalom.

I’ve kept it in great shape by replacing critical parts (just rebuilt the transmission in March) as needed and most importantly, I know how it’s been treated (149k miles)! You will pay penalty for it being overage ie 10years and the tax for 4.2L is quite high. Factor in the cost of fueling it. Gas is cheaper in the states. Factor all these in your cost

Someone made an observation in the comments section indicating that Tony has dropped a few pounds. I believe that is Nana Akua Pokuaa who said that. My question is; why won't he when he is on the motherland happier, eating organic food cooked by his lovely wife, and not the junk we eat here? I also noticed Tony's great transformation on his body. He looks very happy as well. Even his boys are happy they are on the motherland especially the younger one. When his mother asked which road network did he prefer, Ghana or the United States; his straight answer without even thinking about it was Ghana. The little boy first admitted the roads had challenges. However, he still preferred Ghana's. Has anyone thought hmmm! Why that?? In my mind that very moment I said to myself "this little boy is so intelligent" He recognises the fact that bad roads can be fixed when shoulders are put on wheels in Ghana so he didn't see that as a big deal. He had a beaming cute smile on his face when he gladly prefared Ghana's because I believe in his mind, the bad roads is nothing compared to the the systemic RACISM, DISCRIMINATION and BIGOTRY left behind him. For roads, it can be fixed so he can live with it for now. But RACISM can never be fixed in his lifetime . What a smart YOUNG MAN!!! The credit goes to Tony and wife for training your boys to embrace their Africanness. Brothers and sisters both on the continent and those of us in the diaspora should learn something from the thinking process of Tony's son. We should stop complaining and complaining about things that can be fixed. We should rather see business opportunities in the challenges we face when on the mainland, and try to create possible solutions for them while making good money out of the generated solutions. As rightly said by Tony, Ghana is still a developing country with endless opportunities. Our ancestors broke their backs to help make what the West is today, and our reward is RACISM.........It is about time for us to go back home to where our ancestors cane from to help make it a comfortable place for our generation to live. My word of advice to us all is please work smart, save money as much as you can and start packing HOME. Never leave unprepared. You should mention that the duties on car import is dependent on the engine size. Vehicles over 2 cc cost more in duties.. Its better to get a vehicle under 2cc, you will save on duties and gas.

Always so refreshing to see and hear from you guys. Hope my nephews are well rested now and gradually acclimatizing to their new environment. A couple of comments on the topic: 1. There are mechanics and shops that do service various car makes in Ghana, including the American made ones. The challenge is knowing where to find the right dealership but they exist. In fact just about every car make and model is running in Ghana. Generally though, the European and Japanese makes (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, VW, MB etc.) are your best bet because folks are more familiar with them. 2. Yes, you can make do with a saloon car on the roads in Ghana but having an truck is definitely better as you said. And shipping by RORO is about a $1000 for cars and $1500 for trucks. That's if you are shipping from the East coast (eg. Baltimore port); I don't know about other areas in the US. 3. Import duty on pickup trucks are not as expensive as other trucks, especially the luxury SUVs. It's still not as cheap as I'd want it but its far better by comparison. 4. Some of the used vehicles on sale are salvaged cars that have been repaired. Examine it thoroughly before you decide to buy one. 5. It's great having Kantanka cars in Ghana, and I'm sure a lot of people will like to support them. The challenge a lot of people may have, weather real or imagined, is suspicion about their quality and durability.

The driving in Ghana is crazy, at first I was hesitant to drive but once I started i felt ruthless lol. l was like ya, am part of the system now. You definitely have to be an offensive driver there else you ain't going anywhere when you hit traffic. l think tony likes that feeling lol.
@@ExpatLifeGhana ya there was an irish group who sent a tractor to Uganda this can make a huge difference to small village. but the tractor make they sent was never sold in Uganda so when it broke down the villagers had no way of getting spare parts for it. It was a sad and valuable lesson.

For the Africans watching I want to clarify: There are plenty of smallish towns and suburbs and outskirts of larger cities in America with dirt roads in 2020. And potholes in the bigger cities have taken out many tires and suspensions.

I always feel like a kid in a candy store, every time I get a notification regarding your new video. LOL.. I believe it's cheaper to buy a car off the lot in Ghana than to ship it from the US, as the cost of the duty to clear the car from the port is ridiculous, unless you are Lebron, you can ship your own car to Ghana from the US LOL. Also, you gotta be mindful of the engine size of the car you are buying since gas is so expensive in Ghana. Our gas here in the US is priced per gallon but over there in Ghana the price is per liter, the bigger your engine size the more gas you have to buy and the more you pay for it. Due to the bad nature of some of the roads in Ghana, I think a mid-size SUV will be the way to go. I’m a Ghanaian living in Japan, the last time I came to Ghana, my little brother bought me a car from US and shipped to Ghana, I used whiles in Ghana and sold after, make little profit. I always prefer bringing my car whenever coming.
@Nadine Lindsay You just take your current (non expired) driver's license and passport to the licensing office and pay the fee. The most annoying part of the process is the wait. The car registration was through the dealer. Otherwise, same thing, long line with a fee for a person to person sale. You can find someone who will run that for you so you don't have to wait around. Just be sure you have your Ghana address and local phone number. (And never give your passport, ids, a big stack of money, or car title ALL to someone to run for you... always protect your papers.)
For myself I used an international license from AAA and my own license. Insurance very easy to get, registration was easy. My partner had to grease palms for license 2x and was told it would take months to get the license. I recently heard from someone that returnees not allowed to get a drivers license! This needs to be checked out! I was told to grease a palm and I would get a license!
It's great that you guys went back home to Africa but I wish you guys who upload on youtube would be more specific with the cost of living there. Some of the Black Americans who move back there are never specific with the numbers of buying items or monthly expenses hearing those figures would help out a lot for some of us thinking of moving there and giving us an idea on how much money to save.

I just came across your channel and I really enjoyed it! I own a farm in Ghana and I am in the process of shipping a truck to Ghana to be used on my farm. You are right the custom duties are outrageous, but with the cost of the truck, shipping and customs, I would have about $13,000 in it. It is a 4x4 Dodge Ram 1500 with 20 inch wheels. All major parts have been replaced and it's coming with many spare parts and I am a shade tree mechanic lol. Ghana just repealed the law banning vehicles over 10 years old and salvage vehicles. The used car sellers there were up in arms and rightly so, the new law would have put a lot of them out of work and it is election year! So it was shelved. I look forward to watching your upcoming videos. I feel for you my brother having to sell your baby in the States. It will be alright my brother!! Lol. Shalom.

Great video!!! Very helpful! I had concluded that shipping my vintage 2003 Jaguar S-Type 4.2L would be a good option. I’ve kept it in great shape by replacing critical parts (just rebuilt the transmission in March) as needed and most importantly, I know how it’s been treated (149k miles)! With better roads, it would be ideal, BUT you make a lot of sense! Thanks! “KEEP ON!”
You will pay penalty for it being overage ie 10years and the tax for 4.2L is quite high. Factor in the cost of fueling it. Gas is cheaper in the states. Factor all these in your cost

Someone made an observation in the comments section indicating that Tony has dropped a few pounds. I believe that is Nana Akua Pokuaa who said that. My question is; why won't he when he is on the motherland happier, eating organic food cooked by his lovely wife, and not the junk we eat here? I also noticed Tony's great transformation on his body. He looks very happy as well. Even his boys are happy they are on the motherland especially the younger one. When his mother asked which road network did he prefer, Ghana or the United States; his straight answer without even thinking about it was Ghana. The little boy first admitted the roads had challenges. However, he still preferred Ghana's. Has anyone thought hmmm! Why that?? In my mind that very moment I said to myself "this little boy is so intelligent" He recognises the fact that bad roads can be fixed when shoulders are put on wheels in Ghana so he didn't see that as a big deal. He had a beaming cute smile on his face when he gladly prefared Ghana's because I believe in his mind, the bad roads is nothing compared to the the systemic RACISM, DISCRIMINATION and BIGOTRY left behind him. For roads, it can be fixed so he can live with it for now. But RACISM can never be fixed in his lifetime . What a smart YOUNG MAN!!! The credit goes to Tony and wife for training your boys to embrace their Africanness. Brothers and sisters both on the continent and those of us in the diaspora should learn something from the thinking process of Tony's son. We should stop complaining and complaining about things that can be fixed. We should rather see business opportunities in the challenges we face when on the mainland, and try to create possible solutions for them while making good money out of the generated solutions. As rightly said by Tony, Ghana is still a developing country with endless opportunities. Our ancestors broke their backs to help make what the West is today, and our reward is RACISM.........It is about time for us to go back home to where our ancestors cane from to help make it a comfortable place for our generation to live. My word of advice to us all is please work smart, save money as much as you can and start packing HOME. Never leave unprepared. Together we will make Africa what we want her to be After all, 60% of the world's arable is found on the African continent. So you see why my brother Tony is looking great as soon he landed home? I am so happy you have made fully prepared. Long live the black race, and long live prosperous Africa.

Tony..(cool name..it's my dad's ) it WILL be okay. I have a 2019 Subaru Forrester that I plan to sell before moving to Ghana. It has less than 3k miles and I call it The Wanderer. You should mention that the duties on car import is dependent on the engine size. Vehicles over 2 cc cost more in duties.. Its better to get a vehicle under 2cc, you will save on duties and gas.

Brand also counts. The more luxurious ur brand the more u pay in duties. A 2cc Nissan costs less than a 2cc Lexus.

Always so refreshing to see and hear from you guys. Hope my nephews are well rested now and gradually acclimatizing to their new environment. A couple of comments on the topic:
1. There are mechanics and shops that do service various car makes in Ghana, including the American made ones. The challenge is knowing where to find the right dealership but they exist. In fact just about every car make and model is running in Ghana. Generally though, the European and Japanese makes (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, VW, MB etc.) are your best bet because folks are more familiar with them.
2. Yes, you can make do with a saloon car on the roads in Ghana but having an truck is definitely better as you said. And shipping by RORO is about a $1000 for cars and $1500 for trucks. That's if you are shipping from the East coast (eg. Baltimore port); I don't know about other areas in the US.
3. Import duty on pickup trucks are not as expensive as other trucks, especially the luxury SUVs. It's still not as cheap as I'd want it but its far better by comparison.
4. Some of the used vehicles on sale are salvaged cars that have been repaired. Examine it thoroughly before you decide to buy one.
5. It's great having Kantanka cars in Ghana, and I'm sure a lot of people will like to support them. The challenge a lot of people may have, weather real or imagined, is suspicion about their quality and durability.

The driving in Ghana is crazy, at first I was hesitant to drive but once I started i felt ruthless lol. l was like ya, am part of the system now. You definitely have to be an offensive driver there else you ain't going anywhere when you hit traffic. l think tony likes that feeling lol.

@@ExpatLifeGhana ya there was an irish group who sent a tractor to Uganda this can make a huge difference to small village. but the tractor make they sent was never sold in Uganda so when it broke down the villagers had no way of getting spare parts for it. It was a sad and valuable lesson.

For the Africans watching I want to clarify: There are plenty of smallish towns and suburbs and outskirts of larger cities in America with dirt roads in 2020. And potholes in the bigger cities have taken out many tires and suspensions.

I always feel like a kid in a candy store, every time I get a notification regarding your new video. LOL.. I believe it's cheaper to buy a car off the lot in Ghana than to ship it from the US, as the cost of the duty to clear the car from the port is ridiculous, unless you are Lebron, you can ship your own car to Ghana from the US LOL. Also, you gotta be mindful of the engine size of the car you are buying since gas is so expensive in Ghana. Our gas here in the US is priced per gallon but over there in Ghana the price is per liter, the bigger your engine size the more gas you have to buy and the more you pay for it. Due to the bad nature of some of the roads in Ghana, I think a mid-size SUV will be the way to go.

I’m a Ghanaian living in Japan, the last time I came to Ghana, my little brother bought me a car from US and shipped to Ghana, I used whiles in Ghana and sold after, make little profit. I always prefer bringing my car whenever coming.

Can you also talk about the process of getting a driver's license and registration in Ghana.
@Nadine Lindsay You just take your current (non expired) driver's license and passport to the licensing office and pay the fee. The most annoying part of the process is the wait. The car registration was through the dealer. Otherwise, same thing, long line with a fee for a person to person sale. You can find someone who will run that for you so you don't have to wait around. Just be sure you have your Ghana address and local phone number. (And never give your passport, ids, a big stack of money, or car title ALL to someone to run for you... always protect your papers.)

For myself I used an international license from AAA and my own license. Insurance very easy to get, registration was easy. My partner had to grease palms for license 2x and was told it would take months to get the license. I recently heard from someone that returnees not allowed to get a drivers license! This needs to be checked out! I was told to grease a palm and I would get a license!

It's great that you guys went back home to Africa but I wish you guys who upload on youtube would be more specific with the cost of living there. Some of the Black Americans who move back there are never specific with the numbers of buying items or monthly expenses hearing those figures would help out a lot for some of us thinking of moving there and giving us an idea on how much money to save.
@35nomoon - In our cost of living in Ghana video we get very specific about what it takes to live here. All budgets are different but we are honest, upfront and thanks for the comment 😊!
