It looks like a challenge, especially that first portage! Up, down, plus meadow travel yuck in the muck! But Lake Minus looks spectacular! I bet you could spend two weeks just on that lake, and camp at a new spot every day. Did I see a double canoe seat? Brilliant idea. Those sweepers looked like trouble, glad you knew that hitting them was not a good idea. They are always much more sturdy than they look. Loved it all. Good detailed explanations of the things you have to reason out during such a trip.
Thanks for the comment, yes that first portage was a challenge, at least with a pack full with almost two weeks of food. :) You did see a third seat added to the boat. This is something I have done to two of my canoes for solo tripping, it gets my weight more forward and allows the boat to be better trimmed. I plan on doing a video about this. Wow! We just finished 60 miles on the Skagit River here in Washington state. At times we had 3 foot waves in our rapids. More water than you had most of the time. Just picking your spot and staying upright. No portages but we did have a safety pack raft. Ate two days of dehydrated meals. Had 3 coolers between us leaders and the scouts. Been looking forward to this trip for 7 years.
The Photography was professional and lovely, especially the drone footage of the scenery and you paddling. I live my 76 year life through the adventures that explorers like you provide. While in great physical shape, I need to get stronger for a 3 day canoe/camping trip down the Connecticut River this spring in Vermont. . You are blessed to have this life at your fingertips. Enjoy it while you can, man.

What a great trip and video. As an envious non-Canadian I especially appreciate the map at 4:00 which made it possible to follow your voyage easily enough on Google Maps. The drone footage was the icing on the cake, but your pacing is what made it all so pleasant to watch from beginning to end.

Thanks sylvestb, that extra seat allows me to sit a little forward in the boat and gives the boat better trim in the water. If I sit further back the bow of the boat rises and control of the boat is more problematic in whitewater and wind.

I understand the need for a white water paddle and cruising paddle, but is another backup really necessary? 2. Thanks so much, here are my attempts at answering your questions. 1. I could get by with two but if I lose or break a cruising paddle I would rather have a backup cruising paddle. I would hate to have to paddle for days with a whitewater paddle. 2. I could have taken out the other two seats, it would have indeed saved a few pounds, but that would have taken a bit of time and I am sure I would procrastinate in putting them back in after the trip and there is a chance of losing parts in the process. (know thy self 😄). Those are Grey Owl paddles, I have had them for over 20 years and unfortunately it is time to replace them.
I'll take some "good wind" or "muck fest" over the city any day. That sweeper got my heart pumping, glad to hear your doing well....Wing flap was cool and I always wanted my own Ewok glider so I'm looking forward to the video😉

But, spoiler alert, it allows me to sit a little more forward and give the boat a better trim. If the bow is too high in the water it will get pushed by wind and waves a lot more. Much better control with a slight adjustment in weight.

@@KevinOutdoors flew in in the owners Stinson 108-3. He had a cabin close to where you met the lodge owner. Ice house and camp were burnt down when he was not there. He was the last to have a commercial license on the lake. Long ago the name of the lake was Shekak

Why is it so? Is it to avoid fights in such close quarters? Even if the spouse is not too keen on canoeing/camping you would think that they would come at least occasionally to be close to what their loved one is doing. I am really puzzled by this.
@@Alien2799 If you dig in my catalogue you will find trips I've done with my wife. There are plenty of videos about couples doing trips. The videos UA-cam shows you are based on you watch history. If you watch a bunch of solo trippers, we will all have 'solo' in the title or keywords. The algorithm will simply feed you more of what they know you have watched.

@@looking4leasuretime There are remarkably few portages for how far you can travel - the one over the esker, featured in the video is a bit of a killer but the rest are moderate. Unfortunately some of the portages have grown in and are no longer maintained. Some are completely gone making running the white water a necessity so be ready for that. Have a great trip!

Hi Kevin , after canoeing the otherside of 599 last year we are planning to replicate your trip next year. We will start a Minchin and finish at Metcafe at north albany lodge. Steve or Tracy will do the shuttle. Just wondering about the approximate location of the pictographs you saw before Arc lake. Enjoying your backcountry eats book.
Sorry I don't have GPS coordinates but they shouldn't be hard to find. they are on the west side of the river, if I remember right,soon after the river starts to narrow. They are on some cliffs and there aren't many cliffs. There are two sites not too far from each other. You will be paddling the river so just stick to the west side and keep an eye peeled.
Kevin looks beautiful, what's going on in the back of your canoe ? Two seats? Can you elaborate? When I take my prospector out I sit in the front seat and paddle the boat backwards, never seen two seats.
Thanks for noticing that detail. I added another seat to bring my weight forward and give the boat a better trim. I plan do to do a video on this very soon.
My food is mostly dehydrated which keeps the weight and volume down. I store my food in recycled olive barrels. Bear density is low that far north and the bears aren't as accustomed campers so I am not too worried about them. I hope that helps.
Kevin you seemed to find alot of beaches ,was it a low water year when you went. I talked to someone who went this year and they found very few beaches. Did Churchill have many small beaches to stop or camp?

Thanks Mike, the tarp is a Cooke Custom Sewing (CCS) tarp. Mine is 10x12' lots of room for one and comfortable for 2-4 in the rain.

Absolutely, you will be driving hwy 599 which is a bit rough but it is an asphalt paved highway. Happy and safe travels.

Hi Kevin , after canoeing the otherside of 599 last year we are planning to replicate your trip next year. We will start a Minchin and finish at Metcafe at north albany lodge. Steve or Tracy will do the shuttle. Just wondering about the approximate location of the pictographs you saw before Arc lake. Enjoying your backcountry eats book.
Sorry I don't have GPS coordinates but they shouldn't be hard to find. they are on the west side of the river, if I remember right,soon after the river starts to narrow. They are on some cliffs and there aren't many cliffs. There are two sites not too far from each other. You will be paddling the river so just stick to the west side and keep an eye peeled.
Kevin looks beautiful, what's going on in the back of your canoe ? Two seats? Can you elaborate? When I take my prospector out I sit in the front seat and paddle the boat backwards, never seen two seats.
Thanks for noticing that detail. I added another seat to bring my weight forward and give the boat a better trim. I plan do to do a video on this very soon.

My food is mostly dehydrated which keeps the weight and volume down. I store my food in recycled olive barrels. Bear density is low that far north and the bears aren't as accustomed campers so I am not too worried about them. I hope that helps.

Kevin you seemed to find alot of beaches ,was it a low water year when you went. I talked to someone who went this year and they found very few beaches. Did Churchill have many small beaches to stop or camp?
