DJI Mini 2 / SE | Master Airscrew Stealth Propeller Upgrade REVIEW

  • I spent a couple of months flying my Mini 2 with the Master Airscrew Stealth propellers and this is my review.
    NOTE: One item I didn't touch on specifically but should have, is propeller guards. Because the MAS propellers are a touch longer, it's quite likely that they will make contact with your Mini 2/SE prop guards and should probably not be used if you plan on using the guards.
    As always, thanks for watching!

    SO glad to see this review randomly appear in my feed. I just ordered two packs of MAS red blades for my new old stock mini 2 that I just got here in Japan. Speaking of Japan, MAN is it a pain to fly a drone here as I am finding out... so much red tape and hoops to jump through it isn't even funny. I'm secretly flying it around the campus where I work, as it is large enough & there's enough space that I can do so without getting within 100ft of any neighboring buildings/houses in the right areas. Thanks for a great, useful review.

    Not a lot of people know this but when you get a pack of these Master Air Screws they do have some high spots on them , like where they molded them & if you know what your doing you can significantly reduce the noise even more if you carefully cut the molded high spots off of the propellers & use a watch makers plastic crystal buffing wheel with the right compound to smooth all of the ruff spots down being really careful not to thin out the propeller , I did this very thing & got a fantastic result from doing so & had a reduction of noise by 7 decibels & a even lower pitch . I took these propellers even further quieting them better than Master Air Screw them selfs . You want a smooth propeller with no high spots on them because any high spot on the propeller will indeed make the propeller itself noisier & have a higher pitch . Now they work very well & I,m satisfied with the results .

    G’day Steve.
    I’m a later starter, picked up a Mini 2 a couple of weeks ago and had only 2 flight outings due to weather. When it hasn’t been raining, the wind has been up.
    Anyway, I’m guessing that the new blades have slightly more pitch giving extra lift at lower rpm. This can cause the lower pitch when hovering and the movement on ground at minimum motor rpm. Years ago when I was flying light aircraft we coarsened the pitch on our 😮plane’s prop and previously the plane would remain motionless at idle, but after the pitch change, well, we could almost get it to take off with a long enough runway, 😂😂, and it lowered our rpm at cruise (100kts) by quite a bit, but decreased our max climb rate by 200fpm which is substantial. When all said and done economy really wasn’t a winner, but I was happy with the reduction in cruise rpm, funnily enough fuel flow and airflow didn’t show a great deal of improvement.
    Enjoyed your vid, thanks for posting.
    Cheers from downunder.

      Thanks for watching and thank you for the comment. Really interesting stuff actually. I'm sure most drone fliers spend zero time thinking about their propellers. When the Mini 1 was first released it was a little underpowered and if your props were even slightly damaged or warped, the thing would literally drop out of the sky. Replacing the props typically fixed the issue. That's the closest I've come to actually considering how pitch and propeller integrity impacts flight characteristics. Pretty cool stuff.
      Cheers from British Columbia, Canada!

    Used these Stealth props on my mini 2 for about 3 months and it was basically install and forget. They worked fine and seemed slightly quieter. My only concern was when I got a warning about a damaged prop. It appears the DJI blade guard may have damaged one of the blades, though I can't see any actual problems. Got constant warnings until I replaced the prop. And this led to a frustrating realisation: I got Stealth blades in yellow, orange and red. So when one of my orange blade had the issue, I had to swap in a yellow set on that motor. So now the colors don't match. I wish I had just gotten all one color. And I also wish they had GREEN blades so I could easily setup red and green port and starboard colors. That would be really useful. But otherwise I have been pleased with the product. The orange blades were nice for safety purposes.

      Thanks for the comment. It's always good to hear first hand feedback. Yeah, the MAS props are a bit too long for the propeller guards, so you can't use them for that. I probably should have included that bit in my review. Your idea for port and starboard colours is great! Happy, safe flying!

    Great review, Steve! Good to know the weight keeps the drone under the 250g mark. The vibration is a bit worrisome...

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 роки тому +1

      Thank Don! Like I said in the video, I am not stressed about the vibration. Flights were smooth and trouble free and that was my biggest concern. Where you see the drone moving it's sitting on a tabletop covered in white, smooth paper. Not a lot of friction. True, the DJI props do NOT create the same movement but I have to wonder if it's just due to longer, wider props pushing more air. If I put the drone on a rougher surface with the MAS blades it wouldn't move. The video was already getting too long to go down that rabbit hole so I just made folks aware and moved on. It may just be the price you pay for a bit more power and longer flight times. MAS could have just cloned DJI props and added colour but I suppose they wanted give folks a reason to buy them. Cheers!

  • @will_doherty
    @will_doherty Рік тому +7

    Interesting review thanks. The point that you made about the vibration with the new blades I found to be an important one - it obviously is as a result of the blades being out of balance, which will cause additional stresses on the motor(s) and airframe. This is potentially going to cause early failure and possibly loss of control/crashing/maybe loss of the drone. Not something I'd want to risk...

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  Рік тому +2

      Before posting my review, I checked around to see what others were saying about the propellers. I found a few complaining about vibration but it seemed worse than what I was experiencing. I believe in one instance Master Airscrew replaced the props.
      Finding the other reviews mentioning vibration was the only reason I specifically tested for it, otherwise I likely would not have even noticed it. I feel the vibration was observable only because my tabletop is covered in photo background paper, which is surprisingly slippery.
      When the drone was on a more typical surface, it did not wander. There were no other signs of imbalance.
      I didn't think the vibration was serious enough to warrant dismissing the props but I included the information in the video so folks could make their own judgements like you have done.
      I still use them on my Mini 2 and have had no issues. Whether or not they create a long term issue only time will tell. Cheers!

    Hi Steve finally installed a set of MAS props I also got a vibration when sat on a flat surface,,, This said after investigation and looking closer at them whist idling I noticed that the rear right blades (on my install) were running at different heights when looking at them edge on. I found that one of the screws was actually slightly bent at the thread end. I replaced this with an original DJI supplied screw and this brought the props back into line and the vibration stopped.

      Awesome! I really love mine and have been using them exclusively since the review. Hmmm... good question. My gut tells that you probably shouldn't. I feel like it would work but the MAS props are a touch longer and have different characteristics, which may cause unexpected results or at the very least, cause an unbalance putting unnecessary stress on the motors and/or aircraft. If you want to try it regardless, I would put them on in diagonal pairs. So one pair on the front left, one pair on the rear right or vice versa. I feel like that would be the best way to balance them out. Of course though, I'm just guessing here, I have never actually tried it.

    Thanks Steve. This is something I hadn't really been aware of and had been thinking about adding my own colour to the standard blades to aid with visual awareness. I purchased a set (red) for my Mini 2 and tested for noise levels: in a stationary hover - indoors and therefore zero wind - the Master Airscrew blades were 6.2 dBa quieter than the standard DJI blades (81.1 compared to 87.3); which is a reasonably significant delta. I was not able to measure for pitch/tone, but as your review ckearky demonstrated, the MS blades definitely have a lower, and I'd say less annoying pitch. I only wish they also came in green, as I'd to fit red and green to the aircraft, for port and starboard identification..!

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment Robert. I didn't have a decibel meter at the time I reviewed these props - I do now. I didn't go back and measure the noise level so thanks for that! That is significant but I think the pitch makes a big difference. Just like the Mini 3 Pro vs the Mini 2, not a big decibel difference but more pleasant pitch on the M3Pro.
      Good idea with the red/green props. I do wish they had more colours but as long as they have orange, which they do, I'm happy. I have said it for a long time now, I really don't understand why DJI doesn't sell coloured props. Boring black props on a boring grey drone. DJI is leaving money on the table for sure. Cheers!

    Also, does it still keep up with the level 5 wind resistance?
    thanks.

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  Рік тому

      The Mini SE and Mini 2 have similar takeoff weights of 242g. The MAS props are ~1.7g heavier so accounting for that you are still quite a bit below the 250g.
      Theoretically the larger, heavier props should afford the drone a bit more wind resistance but I would suspect the benefit would be minimal. Cheers!

      Honestly, no. If the drone wasn't sitting on a paper surface, which is actually quite slippery, I probably would not have even noticed. On a more typical surface no movement was visible while idling. The only reason I did the test in the first place is I came across some posts about vibration with the MAS props while doing research for the video and I wanted to test it for myself.
      You should be inspecting and replacing props on a regular basis. Between that and the amount of flight time it would take to potentially cause a problem, I think many folks will have either stopped flying or moved on to the next drone.
      I have never understood why DJI doesn't make coloured props. I feel like most folks would rather buy OEM parts. Cheers!

    Excuse me sir, Can the DJI Mini 2 use the DJI MINI 3 PRO propeller?🤔 Thx

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  Рік тому +1

      There are two problems with that. On the Mini 3 Pro, there are posts on the motors on to which the propellers mount. The Mini 2 does not have those posts. If you use the Mini 2 prop screws on the Mini 3 propellers on the Mini2, there is a significant gap between the head of the screw and the top of the prop, which could be problematic. The Mini 3 Pro screws are too short to grab on the Mini 2 so neither screw is suitable.
      The second issue is that the Mini 3 Pro propellers are significantly longer than those of the Mini 2. While the props don't overlap from left to right, they do from front to back. It looks like they should clear vertically as they are at different heights but I suspect that overlap will change the flight characteristics considerably and could result in something very bad happening - haha.
      So, yeah, probably not a good idea. 😀Cheers!

Eagle-eyed subscribers may notice that in my other videos. Case in point my Mini 4 Pro unboxing video. I bring my Mini 3 Pro in to the video for comparison sake and it's sporting MAS props.

Perhaps they are just a fan boy of the brand. Maybe they are giving favourable reviews in the hopes of getting free product in the future. How would you know?

      Yeah, they are a bit too long for prop guards. I thought about including that tidbit but I dropped it in the end. Honestly for me, it's having a trustworthy option for colourful props above everything else. I never understood why DJI hasn't added some colourful propeller options, especially for their Mini line, which is probably their best seller. 😀 Cheers!

    Your comment about blades vibrating causing mini to move when on the ground idling. That's not correct, the master airscrew props are producing more lift at the slower rpm causing the drone to be light on its gear... Good review otherwise. Also technically you can mix colors as long as the blades weigh the same and are the same pitch direction. Using your gram scale or a prop balancer works as well.

    Did not make any difference in the end for my mini 2. I even tested DB levels with oem and ms work hardly any difference in noise level that any subject nearby can still hear, nor distance improvement over many flights. Colors make no sense if you flying unless there is some efficiency I was not aware of 🤔
    For me this is a pitch (sorry for the pun).
    Real improvement lies in seriously reducing DB (by at least 50%) which in my case would be from around 85DB to 40DB at 1.5m height and1m away from DB reader

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 роки тому +1

      MAS only claims "up to" a 2db improvement in noise. I said they sounded "a touch quieter" with a pitch "more pleasing to our ears" being more noticeable. I even let the noise level from both sets play so viewers could judge for themselves. Not sure why you're surprised by the noise level unless you purchased before my vid.
      A part of me likes prop noise though because I like to know when a drone is in the area when I'm not the one piloting it.
      I explained my testing methodology in the video and consistently got more flight time, observable in the log files. If you don't put some effort in to dedicated test, I suspect you wouldn't even notice a benefit. MAS only claims "up to" 3% improvement but like anything, your mileage will vary.
      Other than aesthetics, which I LOVE, the only benefit to coloured props is visibility. Definitely improved with the bright colours. Speaking from experience, finding a grey drone with black props high up in a tree is a painstaking, almost impossible task. Brightly coloured props make it so much easier.
      I love my MAS props and they will continue to rock my Mini 2. I actually need to grab another set of orange because I killed one of mine hitting the wall shooting b-roll for another video - doh! Cheers!

    • @SteveCoutts

      No. The takeoff weight of the Mini 2 with the Master Airscrew propellers is ~239.7 grams. DJI lists the takeoff weight of the Mini 2 at 242 grams, although they say that weight can vary. The extra 1.7 grams of the Master Airscrew propellers will not push it above 249 grams. I should have mentioned that in the video. Sorry for the trouble, cheers!

      As someone who’s hard earned money pays for cameras, lenses, drones, microphones, lights, batteries, memory cards, etc getting something for free now and again is a nice and welcome bonus. I get product offers every single week, most I ignore. When an opportunity comes along to use and review a quality product that would be of interest to me and my audience and it’s not going to cost me anything, I usually jump at it.

    • @SteveCoutts

      Yeah, perhaps I was gushing a bit more than usual in this one. I have tried third-party props in the past for my Mini 1 (ua-cam.com/video/fuEwpzRbpHM/v-deo.html) and although they worked well for me, the quality was definitely suspect and I stopped using them. I have been dying for fun, colourful props from a brand I could trust for my Mini 2 for a long time now. MAS has a good reputation for quality products, so it's certainly no stretch by me to back that up. Seen as a one-off I get it. The credibility part comes from my channel as a whole and seeing me continue to fly with the props I gushed about. Cheers John!
