I can’t believe I actually watched a 38 minute video. So much information here and I had to watch it through. I learned a lot. Dope personality. Thanks for this video.
This weekend I was flying a light over my model's head. She asked if she should worry about it falling on her. I told her to not worry, I learned how to do it safely. I know this is an old video, and I watched it when it first came out and several times after, but this gave me a valuable education to be able to set up my stand safely. I purchased my first C-stand shortly after watching this. Clearest, best C-stand information I've seen on UA-cam. A belated thank you for these videos, Seth.
Hi Seth. The Godox AD600PRO has a perfect socket for 5/8 baby pins, no rocking. The question might have been when a flash head socket is mounted parallel to the ground on the pin with the flash head at a 90 and the head then rotates due to gravity. The proper way to mount a head on a boom is to use a baby pin vertically and mount the flash head on it using the tilt adjustment on the flash head to tip the light down, gravity can not twist it on the baby pin then. You showed an example of that on the grip arm at 32:06.
Thank you Seth, my first use of a C stand and you saved me time and proper way of use. You've gained another follower. Great passion! And that was just on a C stand.
Hello from England. I’ve just watched this after purchasing my first C-stand and wanted to thank you for going through it. Big fan of Adorama, yourself, Daniel and Gavin. Learning tons.
Excellent teaching. I would get the black stands over the silver ones. I had to put (laying horizontally) my Matthews C-stands and rollers in a storage shed for a few years. All the silver stands are badly rusted at the side that was horizontally facing up. I have a black C-stand, no rust problem. I also have some avengers that did better (less rusted) than the Matthews. Not very humid where I live, probably they would have rusted a lot more in NYC.
Thanks Seth. I bought a C-stand earlier this year, but haven't used it yet. When I do, your video will be invaluable. Have a good Christmas - and stay safe.
Seth, bro its scary how many videos are out there with improper c-stand use. I really wish this video gets millions of views to counteract all the ignorance out there. Stay safe out there everyone and practice proper c-stand use.
after using cheap stands for three years, I ordered a c stand from Adorama, a flashpoint C stand. I am so impressed with the quality and fit and finish. It comes with a bar, baby pin and two clamps and a nice foam hand grip. Thanks Seth for putting this tutorial together. Ted
glad this was helpful just be aware those stands save cost by using Die cast parts which over time can crack so just be sure you look it over every now and then on the collars any metal that feels texture is diecast usually
I owned an overkill boom that I used in a small apt! I loved shooting under it with no post in the way. I had to let it go and no one wanted it so I put this $700 dollar piece of gear on the street! A few years later I have a studio and I still dont own a c stand! And now I have to replace my Canon Pro 1000 printer which I really need....does anyone else spend a few thousand to make a few hundred? Am I hopelessly addicted? I watched this video a few times prepping myself for that stand...great presentation Seth...thank you again a year later.
Thanks Seth. This was super helpful! Just discovered your channel and I subscribed because of this video! Nice to see everyday mundane stuff addressed.
Oh awesome! Thanks for subscribing welcome! You might want to check out my twitch page for a lot of candid on the spot Q&A for more topics like this! Goes to show we can’t read minds and I did this video out of boredom didn’t know it was a gap in a lot of people’s game we focus so much on the main things like lighting we forget about the support. Twitch.tv/LastXwitness
Very helpful and informative video. Just starting to use C stands myself and you have enlightened me. I knew about the righty-tighty and lefty-loosey but the way the knobs and legs should be aligned I definitely did not know. Many Thanks!!!!!!!
Great refresher Seth. My back absolutely hates hauling c-stands on locations, but I NEVER leave home without them! Cannot afford to loose the Profotos.
who ever comes up with a legit "travel" c stand one day wins lol.. till then we have this decades old proven standard when used right... thanks for watching!
The "pumpkin" is a Kupo counter weight for grip stands on Adorama. I use the Flashpoint C stands and so far they have been really good but I'm not using them constantly like you. Flashpoint also makes a long baby pin that has divots machined in for lights or modifiers to stop them from twisting as you were describing. I'm sure the Matthews are better for heavy use situations though. Great informative video Seth!
Yea there’s a million diff pins actually Grip is endless but there’s some standards you’ll run into out there in rental houses and studios and knowing them can get you through a lot on the fly
Great video Seth. Thanks. I have learned how to safely rig my C-stands and the correct terminology. I should have had this video two weeks ago. I set up (wrongly) a C-stand and was stood beneath it and loosened the grip arm knuckle. The arm and pin rotated and hit my forehead. Lots of blood! So thanks for the safety video. Really appreciate it.
Thank you ! That was really helpfull ! I just bought my first c-stand today and was looking for some advices on how to use it. You gave me far more answer that I expected and really good explanations!
Same here.Bought my first c stand and re- watching this video to get the right way to set up.There are so many " educational videos " out there with improper techniques. At least I know this channel is reliable source of info ! Thankyou Seth
@@LastXwitness I'll be doing two person interview next, me & other. Do you have suggestions as how to light it? I've been googling around and found that maybe a cross lighting style like this ua-cam.com/video/SekTNiXCiEw/v-deo.html could work. We'd be sitting at the end of a table facing each other, three cameras, two for closeups and one as the master both in frame. I'm thinking about two led panels with softboxes as keys and one large lantern'ed COB in the center as fill. I wonder how that would play out. Also, I released my first video in English, check it out if you like. Bear with me, doing it in English turned out to be more difficult than I initially thought.
Great video, thanks a lot, very helpful. Side note: Wikipedia thinks the name comes from a lighting company named "Century lighting". Could not spot a 100 inch reflector in many pictures of vintage Hollywood movie sets ("...The C-Stand, or century stand, was named for the company that first produced bespoke lighting gear for live theater and filmmaking: Century Lighting in NYC, which later became Century Strand and eventually Strand Lighting. In later years, studios, grips and gaffers began to manufacture the earliest versions of what we now call C-Stands. The original C-Stands had welded bases that did not fold up or adjust but the fact that they easily nested together made them invaluable on the stage.")
Great work and explanations brother. Saved me. Dealing with new C Stands and brand new lights. Ugh!!! Thank you and continue keeping separation between you and the rest. 👍🏽👍🏽
Seth, should call your instructional videos the “no bullshit zone.” Right to the point and useful while completely avoiding the nonsense. This one helped clean up my c-stand bad habits. Thanks.
Seth, thank you for this. I've finally plunged into my first C stand. Went with a Mathews after a long time of debating. I am looking forward to the functionality this piece of gear will provide.
Thank you so much I really appreciate that. I actually filmed a more proper edited higher quality version for Avenger so be on the looks when they post it on their channel whenever that is 🤷♂️
Seth! I can tell you know your shit by the way you handle the product. You have a ton of experience with this equipment and it's second nature to you. Excellent video! I just started to realize how great c-stands are and I'm still learning. I love the reflector trick. Thanks for taking the time to teach the proper way to use c-stands.
Thank you so much for this video - this was a great tutorial by someone that is very experienced with these stands... I'm years ahead because of your video.
Seth one thing I did years ago to keep lights from twisting or rotating was I ground a flat spot with an angle grinder on my pins so when you tighten the head it won't rotate, worked well for years for me. You'd think after 40 yrs in a studio I'd learn something lol, I like your stuff.
Thank you so much Seth. I have always wanted to know the names of the different parts of the gear and how they should be set up. Your stream has been extremely useful, a lot of very sensible information!
Been using C-Stands for years (Kupo stuff, here) and it's never occured to me to use the "bite point" that you've used here LOL Thanks for another excellent video.
bit late to the party but on the spinning note I haven't had major issues with most things, but heavy monoblocks and heavy modifiers like large old metal BD's can try and turn so on several of my grip pins I've dremmeled a flat facet with diamond burrs (using cutting head extension and a waterbath to do underwater to keep cool as not sure if they get heat treated). Nothing drastic just a few mm to stop any turn possible but still have the knurled round surface if I want it on approx 320degrees or so around the rest of pins head. Nearly all my baby pins are that model kupo pin with a couple of collared doughty baby with the through drilled collar for cable/wire and since you don't need to remove much metal they are still plenty robust enough even after years of being clamped down on the flat face they're fine. As for the stands good to see a guide with proper weighting, all the more important to me because I use sliding leg over turtle base because I set up on stairs a lot and no other stand can do that. Heavy lights and stand toppling down stairs killing talent isn't covered by my insurance I suspect.
What is a good weight for a sandbag for small mono lights with battery attached. Lights are 6 lbs and the largest modifier would be a 38" parabolic soft box on a 20" grip arm close to the riser. 10 lbs - 15 lbs? I really like the pumpkin idea. Just not to have sand or pebble dust near my equipment.
15 is pretty standard Nd yea pumpkins are awesome. Lock them down to the legs and it’s small clean and always weighed down but are a pain to constantly take off if you move stands a lot and you usually put one k. Each leg. They are really good for stands with wheels on them so it’s weighed down but still movable.
Thank you, Seth! I've been using grip gear for over a decade and I learned a couple of tips here. I'm also an audio engineer, let me know if you need anything. Keep up the great work!
Could you do a vid on a few simple grip topics like how to best attach a Halo diffuser that's got a 1/4 20 screw onto a light stand or C stand to make it the most useful? Always wondered why my arm hung on the left and the small screws on the left got in the way. Twenty years taking photos and I have been putting my c stands together wrong.
Very informative video thanks is Matthews 20" C+ Stand with Turtle Base, Grip Head and Arm Kit (Black) a better buy than the Kupo 40" Riser C-Stand Turtle Base Kit (Silver, 9.7'). This is my first C stand and I don't want to buy twice
Best way to improve your photography is to master lighting. Not as sexy as cameras or lenses to most peeps though. Super useful info very well explained thanks Seth.
Thank you so much Seth. Best video ever on how to die C-stands!! Just got my first yesterday, and ordered another two this morning. Question, how do you call that horizontal construction at 24:44 , and where did you buy yours? I see there are 3 pins attached to it, are they baby pins? Thank you very much in advance!
adorama.rfvk.net/c/1418195/51926/1036?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adorama.com%2Fmtb655040.html its a grp arm or hollywood arm.. you still need a 5/8ths baby pin
thank you so much for your awesome video on proper c-stand use...i just used my brand new stands (first time c-stand user) yesterday in a L cyc for a music video...boy am i embarrassed about how i set them up...i've added the kupo pins to my cart but what's the name of the menorah type thing...can't find it.
you could mill,or file , a flat area on the baby-pin diameter. this would give the screw in the light, an area to tighten, which would stop the light turning when on the baby-pin.
I can’t believe I actually watched a 38 minute video. So much information here and I had to watch it through. I learned a lot. Dope personality. Thanks for this video.

This is awesome. I paid tons of cash to learn this in film school 20yrs ago, nice to get a free refresher course with someone knowledgeable.
I really appreciate that thank you! I have 2 degrees...and ive learned more on set and assisting than at any school lol
Fantastic instant fun training on some critical basics. Thanks!
Thank you so much glad you liked it!

We all have more tricks to learn right? Glad it was worth while for you. Audio is my weakest link I’m still learning more myself
Again, top quality video and totally useful info. You rock as usual man, thank you for your time. Take care.

Perfect video!! Do you recommend matthews or avenger?
Very informative video thanks is Matthews 20" C+ Stand with Turtle Base, Grip Head and Arm Kit (Black) a better buy than the Kupo 40" Riser C-Stand Turtle Base Kit (Silver, 9.7'). This is my first C stand and I don't want to buy twice

Question, how do you call that horizontal construction at 24:44 , and where did you buy yours? I see there are 3 pins attached to it, are they baby pins?
Thank you very much in advance!

thank you so much for your awesome video on proper c-stand use...i just used my brand new stands (first time c-stand user) yesterday in a L cyc for a music video...boy am i embarrassed about how i set them up...i've added the kupo pins to my cart but what's the name of the menorah type thing...can't find it.
you could mill,or file , a flat area on the baby-pin diameter. this would give the screw in the light, an area to tighten, which would stop the light turning when on the baby-pin.
Or .. jsut Mount it right .. use right angles and the lights pivot points to properly balance
@@LastXwitness I was commenting about non pro-photo type lights (godox etc) where the fixings may not be as good as you said they might be.
