Ex VFX/post dude here who left big studios and is doing his own thing now. I just got 2 c-stands and thought I knew what I was doing, but I was just schooled. Thanks!
I’m late to this party, but I just had to comment that you are one of the finest teachers I’ve ever had the pleasure to encounter. Many thanks from…a teacher 👏
Best demonstration of C stands. Thank you! I appreciate the repetition on why little knobs on left, big knobs on right. I finally understand why this is imperative to make sure the big knobs are on the right when you have the light at the end. No one has made it this clear. Excellent instruction. Thank you!
I literally gasped when you showed how to use the reflector like that with the c stand... thank you so much for everything in this video, it was exactly what I needed!
Finally a complete guide well explained 🙏🙏 btw, to add weight on legs of any kind of stand, I now simply use a speed clamp upsidedown (or any pro clamp with a long enough pin) and slide small gym plates on the bar. Way cheaper than the pumpkins, clean, compact, available anywhere 😉
Dude, Seth, I really didn't want to watch a half hour video on C-stands but I watched the entire thing. SO HELPFUL! This was amazing and I can't believe how many uses a C-Stand has. You taught me invaluable skills. I definitely wasn't using it properly, but I will now! Thanks so much.
If you are going to watch one video about C Stands. This is it! Seth Miranda was super clear, pleasant and knowledgeable. Well Done! Thank you! He needs his own channel
Duuuuuddee!!! I have owned and used C-stands for years…but I didn’t know some of these things. This is huge! The part about the little knobs on the left and the big knobs on the right, makes total sense. Also I’ve been using the wrong end to mount my lights (smooth end and not the knuckle with a baby pin) there’s always something new to learn in photography even for veterans. Thanks so much for the great info! (Oh and I’m buying some of those junior to baby pins to make low floor stands)
I wish someone had told me this decades ago. I had to learn all of this by trial & error. Mostly error. Because mistakes make for excellent learning opportunities. LOL When someone does something wrong, and they get away with it…no correction is apparently necessary. OTOH…when something fails and/or falls, the mistake is learned. Hopefully. Fortunately I figured all this out years ago without injuring anyone…but tips like this would have been massively appreciated. Keep up the great work.
One of the things I really appreciate about Seth is, he talks fast-but that means he can tell you something important five times in a row and drill it into your consciousness, stays with you longer and makes it harder to forget, then on to something else important that you need to know.
They are an industry standard for a reason they just might not be a piece of gear most people are aware of if they don’t end up on a working set out there Just keep it safe !
I've been a hobbyist photographer for 11 years now and I'm always scouring YT for useful informational vids to better learn the craft. It's rare when I stumble upon something useful and I found this to be immensely informative. Seth is my new favorite person on YT! I remember years ago learning about the weight on the correct side so that it tightens the grip arm over the center column if too heavy, but I've since forgotten and it makes perfect sense now that I'm using C-stands more often. LOVE the techniques for holding reflectors/foam core boards!! Even though everyone else does it, do not...repeat: DO NOT attach monolight to the rod portion of the grip arm. Always use the knuckle with a 5/8" baby pin. Intuitively it just made sense, but now you've given me solid validation. Do you have a similar vid for using super boom arms safely?
Even better, imho consider using light stands when you want to mount a light, as they are more stable overall. A C-stand is the second-best option if you can't use a light stand. C-stands are better suited for supporting cutters, flags, boards, etc.
This is fabulous. I've just recently started moving toward off-camera flash and trying to educate myself about studio lighting. So of course that takes you to light stands which takes you to C-stands. Looking at a picture of a grip head is like trying to read ancient Egyptian. This is the first comprehensive lesson I've seen going from base to riser to grip head to boom arm. Thank you!
Along with a sand bag on the long leg, i use a counterweight on the grip arm when i have a light and modifier on it. It helps when making adjustments to the position of the lights/modifier.
Yea counter weights are awesome most people don’t have access to them unfortunately but clamping down a weight is super convenient and adds stability up top as well for sure
@@LastXwitness yes, at our work we recently started selling these units and we know the part numbers well.....but the gaffers use all slang names for them so it's alot of learning
It’s pretty much the same just imagine a light on that baby pin I show you but it you really need to see it in action I have endless videos with lights mounted and even live stream demos building set ups from scratch if you feel you need to see a light put onto a stand
@@LastXwitness I picked up a set of full 40” Kupo stands. They will replace my cheap backdrop stand kit. Give me lots of comfort when I use my 108” paper roll back drops.
Just bought a c stand, and waiting for it to arrive. Thanks so much for the video, really well explained especially considering safety aspects,. Nice little touch re reflector etc :) Thanks again.
Seth, You are an amazing showman. Your enthusiasm and energy is inspiring. I've learned so much in a short period of time watching your presentations. I always look forward to seeing your UA-cams! The only downside to watching you is you make me wanting and buying more studio gear!
I really appreciate that. Thanks so much. Glad any of this is helping out there. You’re welcome to add views to my stuff 😂 if anything it might save you $ by making better choices in the long run 🤷♂️
This is unbelievably useful. I was about to go back to the start to review the highlights, and then you repeated the most important information again before wrapping up. Thank you Seth!!
your way of explaining things are a blessing for the artistic mind. thank you so much for explaining things in detail and getting always straight to the point. this is how youtube used to be. maybe it's the future. all the best for your channel. subbed and am happy the algor did something good this time presenting your video which was worth spending lifetime.
Two of my favorite things Seth Miranda and Avenger gear. One thing I've learned is don't skimp on grip and make sure you know how to use it. I also sent him this video, great reference for those new to using C-Stands.

The BEST C stand video out there !!
🙏 thank you!
Thanks for having me in your channel. Been using your grip probably my whole career
Thanks for a super helpful video. I set up my C-stand along with you and appreciate the attention to detail.
You’re the best at teaching c-stand fundamentals on UA-cam! Thank you and happy shooting!
Best of the best videos on the internet for C Stands. Thanks a lot. Greetings from Bangalore, India
Love seeing the depth Seth goes into when creative videos. I love he pulls the pin from his back pocket. Gangsta.

Welcome to this area of the game 🙏
this filled in all the little gaps i needed to know.

Wow thank you so much that’s a high bar 🙏
Thankyou for saying the actual part numbers of the pins etc, that helped me quite alot
Yea everything’s always a part number makes things a lot faster when you gotta ask for when when buying renting or borrowing lol
@@LastXwitness yes, at our work we recently started selling these units and we know the part numbers well.....but the gaffers use all slang names for them so it's alot of learning

Nicely done.....thank you!
thanks appreciate you watching
One of THE best instructional videos on YT! 🙏🏻 But I do wish it was demonstrated with a strobe attached rather than a reflector.
It’s pretty much the same just imagine a light on that baby pin I show you but it you really need to see it in action I have endless videos with lights mounted and even live stream demos building set ups from scratch if you feel you need to see a light put onto a stand
Thanks for the tips!! I’ve been using regular stands but want to upgrade to c stands. This helped a lot.
Awesome. They def will open up some set ups and possibilities for you.

Awesome. Thank you. I knew none of that as I am a newbie to more a professional home studio set up. Just fabulous.

🙏🫀🙏 glad it was helpful
Superb video! Amazing value!
Thank you very much!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks brother I just noticed I buy 2 stands but missing the arm holders
There’s a lot of parts to a c stand it allows for some variation you don’t always need arms 🤷♂️
