The Bar-Kays (from my hometown of Memphis) were the pure essence of funk! And those horns--largely missing in today's music--were the stone cold truth!

I had always wanted to see this group, on stage and in their (own) home state, plus hometown, too, way back in mid '84 when I had been stationed, as a young Army trooper...blah, blah, blah...
Still, I had never gotten a chance, albeit, perhaps, I could have, a few times...ah, but duty calls sometimes...seeing them on their own turf, their own stomping ground, as it were...Memphis? ah, but oh well...
I still doubt that many out here, my age, my still upbringing, my still home state, can still, verily, say with me:
I have ALL of their albums ever made, recorded, pressed, vinyled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!classic, brilliant, 70s, 80s, and 90s..........................

Funk like this made me the unique harmonica player I am today as Ive stolen a few of my tunes from the greatest funksters that also had me sharing the stage with a visit from Larry Graham when he come to Australia.Ive had a few comments on the way I play the mouth organ, its a hard one to explain when your raised on funk thanks to my older brother who had the best Funk collection in New Zealand back in the day but the blues had me @ 16 yrs old back in 1986 when Stevie Ray Vaughn hit the vinyl.Played Bourban Street just before the 9/11 doing a 6 week stint in the states.Love my Funk always will, thanks to all the Nubian Nation ,you can,t fake the funk
    Peace

My favorite funk group is my home boys the Bar-Kays. Larry went through every faze of life. I know the word on the street. Rick James was a Larry Dotson knock-off. I wonder how Larry felt when Rick James and his punk-funk came to town back when he dropped Street Songs ..... and broke Elvis Presley's records at the Mid South Coliseum? Rick James was a Larry Dodson impersonator! What a slap in the face to the hometown band. They never got the credit they deserve at home. They had us rocking so many summers with their hits. When they dropped "Do it Let me See You Shake" there is not a woman on the planet that can do that dance better than Memphis girls.... I live in L.A. now.... trust me.

Cauley survived the crash, Alexander wasn't on the plane. They both reformed the Bar-Kays wth new members still recording for Stax. You can see the reformed group in the WattStax concert film performing and also backing other acts. That band with some member changes are the group you see here. Booker T and the MG's were Redding's studio and touring group until that tour in 1967.

But, I confess, I've never actually really had taken notice of this original video from them (I thank the uploader of this, too)...
Since, it definitely doesn't seem to be on Soul Train or American Bandstand...cuz, even rock bands, like Kiss, Ozzy, etc., could get away with decapitating animal's heads, etc., but their look, dress, here, seems, to me, to be a cross between punk rock, so-called black rock, competion w/ Rick James' super freak stuff, U.S. southern version of a contorted bootsy collins, parliament, funkadelic, Saturday Night Fever, "jungle boogie"...or....?
