My father Ben Cauley was the ONLY survivor of the plane crash and he's still playing his trumpet and performing this day...James Alexander took another flight out.
I'm not sure if you know this or not, but why didn't Carl Sims stay with the band too? He was on the plane with James. The Carl Sims that later made the solo hit song "I'm Trapped". Fan of the Bar-Kays and have always wondered, Carl Sims seems to not be in a lot of Bar-Kays info out there on the internet because he didn't join the reformed band.
The original Barkays ...great that the reformed band still carried that vibe...that plane crash hit me hard.. Otis and these guys were set to shake the world. Bless them.

@@leonguisburg413 Yes. Great info...it's easy to forget that James Alexander and Cauley reformed them as an instrumental band before adding Larry Dodson in 1970. I believe that's a young Harvey Henderson on sax who remained on through the 80s.

This digital artificial intelligence spin they put in music production today is not real. You cannot get around the prerequisite of a live three piece rhythm section. Drums, Bass, rhythm guitar. Everything else is gravy. The Bar-Kays were a great band. Especially "Soul Finger".
The Bar-Kays killing this monster jam! These boys were rough and ready. Thanks for posting this performance, it is very rare. I remember when we lost most of them in the plane crash with Otis on Dec. 10, 1967. That was a very sad day for me and many others. Miraculously, Ben Cauley survived the crash. Whereas James Alexander never boarded the plane. They reformed the Bar-Kays and continued the groups great legacy.

So very sad - all of these guys went down in the plane that also killed Otis Redding, Dec. 1967. RIP Ben Cauley (Oct 3, 1947 - Sept. 21, 2015), you are reunited with your bandmates.

There was one Bar-kay who was a survivor of that crash. Apparently the group had different members over the years when they performed.

Huh? You make it sound like he was a token white. The fact is, the stable of musicians at Stax-Volt was white and black. Did you ever see the Blues Brothers? The guitar and bass player, Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn were both white. They were from Booker T & the MGs and the Mar-Keys. The fact is, in '60's Memphis, black and white musicians and producers were drawn to this music. It was fully integrated. There was nothing token. Cropper co-wrote many of the great soul hits of the '60's.
Only 2 members here was on this recording the trumpet player & bass player however, this was taken around 69' & the band 2yrs.before were still in their teens parish in plane crash did the original studio recording.
I worked at Larry Dodsons house today in Memphis...Didn't know who he was till I saw his gold records on the wall and even after that I just thought he was a fan but then I saw him in one of the framed posters and so I searched him up and sure enough he was the vocalist for the Bar-Kays. I was just there to fix his toilet lol. Didn't know exactly who he was till I left and searched em up or I woulda gotten a picture w him next to all them framed gold records. For anybody wanting to know, he was still wearing the gold hoop earrings even though he was all alone at the house lol
this song was always in my mind, i liked it as a little girl and never knew the name, i typed in the movie spies like us and bingo! i found it, The Bar Kays! now i know, i Just love it! after twenty some years Yea ! by Angie
This is the first time I seen the original group. I was 11 when they died. I just bought their CD and listen to it yesterday. That trumpet player wow. He was playing the high C notes for sure.
KNARF1 The two surviving members after the '67 crash were James Alexander and Ben Cauley (R.I.P.), who was the sole crash survivor. James Alexander, bass player, front far right in this video, and a vocalist, who sat in with The Bar-Kays on occasion, Carl Sims, took an alternate flight to Madison, Wisconsin, they were not able to fly with the other guys, because of the limited seating capacity of the plane. Ben Cauley struggled with the reality of what had happened for the rest of his life pretty much. I read an interview of Ben Cauley, some years ago, of the accounts of what happened that fateful day. He said that they would usually ask the pilot, who was a friend of Otis Redding, to start the plane up, so they could get warm, but on this particular day, the pilot said that he couldn't do it, because of the plane's low battery, he said that he didn't really think nothing of that. So on the plane they did the usual, joke around, and talk, he said that Otis Redding told them about a new record he was finishing up, all it needed was the horns, and they would hear it, and add the horns when they got back to Memphis, this was the first time any of them had heard about "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay". Ben Cauley said that they all napped, and were awaken by the plane shaking violently, and he said he looked over to Phalon Jones (Saxophonist), and heard him say "man, what is that"? He said that Jones then looked out the widow and yelled "OH NO", as the plane was nearing impact with the lake. He said that the next thing he knew, he was hanging on for dear life, to a seat cushion, in the frigid lake, and he could hear his band mates fighting to survive, and then he saw three of them struggling to stay afloat, Phalon Jones, Ronnie Caldwell, and Carl Cunningham. As he struggled to survive for around 20 - 25 minutes, he said that the cold was starting to make him lose consciousness, and as he started to let go of the seat cushion, someone had reached him in the lake, and pulled him inside of a boat. He said that three others from the plane were on the boat already, and he asked if the others were alright, but he was told to lay down, and a tarp was put over all of them. As they arrived ashore, the tarp was pulled off of them, and the others were covered in algae, he told the rescuers who they were and that they were playing tonight, and that's when he was told the news, that he was the only one to survive the crash, he said that he immediately went into shock. He told the interviewer that he always feels eerie, whenever he hears "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay"...
How can it be the original group if only two surviving members are playing? These are the new members plus the two surviving members from the original group. Some years back they had a memorial concert in Madison and Ben Cauley attended and played his trumpet. That Summer Show of Stars featured two of the brightest new young acts in the Stax orbit, including the original Bar-Kays and Arthur Conley, who was being nurtured by Otis Redding. Conley never had another great hit after Otis died.
De lo primero que alguna vez escuché. Era yo un chiquillo de 8 años y esta melodía me cautivó .... y todavía me para el pelo Gracias por algo tan especial

Only 2 members here was on this recording the trumpet player & bass player however, this was taken around 69' & the band 2yrs.before were still in their teens parish in plane crash did the original studio recording.

quite possibly the best song ever. always puts me in a great mood!!
Im only twelve so you expect me to like todays music but i think music like this is way better, im not a hipster.
?
Celebs Living In Jackson im trying to say this is godly compared to dubstep in my opinion
sky rocket You have identified yourself as too young to use the internet, or form coherent sentences. Keep working on it though, and nice enthusiasm!
Andrew Hastings thanks :D
Good thing I'm a teenager now.
BTW, the BarKays were an influence to Justin Timberlake, who is from Memphis.
Man, they can sure do it. That guy with the trumpet is amazing.
Remember this song from the 60's and it still sounds good rest in peace to the bar kays thanks for the memories.
How many of you know when to exactly say "Soul finger" in your best russian accent at the beginning of this song?
So tragic this band was torn apart by the infamous plane crash. I would have loved to see this lineup continue as the second house band for Stax
I want them to play this and Play That Funky Music at my funeral.
this song was always in my mind, i liked it as a little girl and never knew the name, i typed in the movie spies like us and bingo! i found it, The Bar Kays! now i know, i Just love it! after twenty some years Yea ! by Angie
One of my very very favourite instrumentals. Always makes me think of the tiles club in Oxford street.
This is the first time I seen the original group. I was 11 when they died. I just bought their CD and listen to it yesterday. That trumpet player wow. He was playing the high C notes for sure.
R.I.P Ben Cauley
RIP tonight Ben Cauley
RIP Ben Cauley!
