I love how when Rick Mast or any other guests says, "but that's another story" and then Jr says "Tell It"
im sitting here like this clip might never end because one story leads to another
@@JunkWaffles Well after all that's Dale's job, to pull stories out of these guys! They are probably scheduled for an hour interview and if Dale can pull 5-6 stories or several hours out of these talks, he has more content to post on his podcasts!
GREAT to hear
"SONNY HUTCHINS"
name mentioned, We don't hear it often enough ! ! !
One of the pioneers of the sport, truly one of the GREATEST - LONG LIVE HIS MEMORIES #01
Yeah, I'd like to hear those other stories!
This is like the History Channel for race fans - Love it
It really is
shhhh dont say that or it will turn into a reality scripted series.....😂🤣😅🤭
Dude these interviews you guys have are freaking LEGIT!! I can't get enough of these old stories.
Man, Jr. I am 59 Years Old and watched Nascar all my life and I just love these stories of how it was and how it was handled in the day. Please keep it up. Thanks Kenny
Really great to hear these stories, very interested in them. Keep up the great job. Rudy
I'm 48 and feel the same way. Can stuff like this possibly still happen today? I don't think so.
Rick is a guy who has so many good stories, you could never get tired of them. Just a terrific guy ...
Rick Mast's Skoal car back in the day had some pretty cool paint schemes. Of course, Harry Gant's was the best. But, I did love those paint schemes.
I liked his 2000 Pontiac better in my opinion.
Handsome Harry. 😀. Lol
high groove harry
Damn Junior I'm 60 years old been watching NASCAR on my life and I love hearing them old stories from back in the day especially with your dad brings back a lot of memories and there's a lot of stories I haven't heard like this one great job y'all keep it up
Seems like all the NASCAR drivers from that era are great storytellers. And seems like most of the stories involve Jimmy Spencer and/or Dale Earnhardt!
Spencer's nickname wasn't Mr. Excitement for nothin' lol.
It sure wasn’t
@@aidandavis1959 damn is this really you?? If so... I'm a fan of your driving and career!!! It's too bad there's no money in racing on dirt! Best wishes for 2020...from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸
Thanks Bill
@@aidandavis1959 you're welcome!! I remember hearing your name for the first time in NASCAR!!! I was like... oh a guy with the same name as the little guy that runs on dirt!!! Then the camera showed you!!! The little dirt guy!!!...from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸p.s. I was almost 6'7" tall
Brother, I will NEVER get tired of hearing these epic stories from back in the day, hardcore drivers. There must be a million stories still untold of how Dale Sr took care of the down and out, broke, struggling race car driver, behind the scenes. He did it right, he did it in a way from his heart.
Jimmy Spencer racing the leaders when he’s laps down and wrecking them out -- boy, there’s a shocker!
Rick Mast had some awesome stories ... THank yall for bringing in the folks who were there in the day !!
Rick Mast was my favorite driver as I grew up in Lexington, VA. Dale Jr also was my favorite. However, I was a Dale Sr hater growing up until he showed up to sign autographs at Rick's Annual Charity event. Dale had been in a wreck the previous week and got out of the hospital and took a chopper up to Lexington. That was a class act and since then I became a Dale Sr. fan. Thanks for having him on Dale Jr.
Love these stories, you connect with these guys and its like were seeing a movie when you get them to open up.
all these videos of drivers from the 70's 80' and early 90's need to be put in the HOF or national archives.. Truly prices stories..
I laughed my ass off when he did that Tommy Ellis voice. It was totally spot on.
I could listen to stories like this for hours. Love this content!
I grew up in the same area as Rick Mast and folks he is just a good ole boy! I mean a nice guy no different than your buddy at work. He is a quiet guy who yea likes to talk but would most like to just fade into the background. We didn't grow up in a poor area but as Rick said it was remote as far a racing went. His family owned a dirt track in Natural Bridge Va. where he cut his teeth beating and banging. I believe his father in-law really got him out of that local racing scene and into more of a statewide group of racers. You do not see racers like Rick anymore because they are not smooth enough or cool enough or let's say good looking enough. Now days sponsors are hiring a spokesman as much as they are a racer and they are looking for polished pitchmen or women. Sort of sad really!! These guys helped build the sport and I think are missed!!
I love these old racing stories!
Love Rick Mast, want to hear anything that man has to say...
DJD really needs to get Kenny Schrader on the show!
Absolutely.. but that might take up a few hours of stories.
I tweeted that to Junior the other day, never got a tweet back. I also suggested Delma Cowart
Might want to check because *THE* story is on there
Nothing like hearing about racing in the 90's and before ! Awesome 👍!
I absolutely love hearing those stories!! Man....
"How dad was protected" is most likely a very deep subject.
Have Rick back on to share some more of those stories. Great guy.
I was 5 years old when Rick Mast got into the Skoal car and was my favorite driver until he retired. So glad to see him telling stories. Wish he was around Cup more. Never won in Cup but was a great driver and drove clean.
Just a "Good Ol Boy" sure do miss these kinds of personalities.😥
I remember when Rick Mast showed up on the scene and was a contender right away, was great to see someone from out of nowhere do that in those days, Lake Speed was another one, will never see that again the way things are now. Those were the golden days.
Absolutely incredible bit there, thank you for having Rick on
Love seeing the drivers from the older era of NASCAR.
Need to get more of these legends on love hearing their stories
Love hearing the old racing stories from the 80s and 90s
i love the blue collar, hard working, grit and grind drivers who put it all on the line. those boys were real racers. todays racers have them to thank for paving the way.
I could listen to these old timers tell stories for days. Great content!!
Good to see Rick Mast. Good guy.
Awesome interview, I just can't get enough of these stories.
Like Paul Harvey used to say, "and that is the rest if the story, good day"!
Loved this episode! Could listen to Rick Mast all day, should put more on
Miss those days just listening to Mast brings back memories
Till the end of time, there will never be another Dale Earnhardt
Love to hear stories like that keep them coming 👍
These interviews with former drivers are the best. It’s time to go back through the list and revisit these guys and more of their stories. PLEASE AND THANKS 🙏
So many memories in this one. I saw Rick win the bush race at Richmond maybe the 2nd or 3rd year of the new track. He's the first driver I ever saw have success running a higher line there. I saw him and Tommy Ellis run at Southside many times. I saw Emanuele Zervakis' black eyes but never knew how it happened. My parents were just a day away from closing on a new house just down the street from Rick when dad lost his job and we had to pass on it. And when Sportcenter came on to announce Dale's death, I was watching in a restaurant with some friends and the table next to us was Tommy Ellis.
Nice to see Rick again.Always rooted for him back in the day.Crummy his health made him get out of the car but glad to see he is doing OK.
When he was telling the story about Sr. saying "Sorry I got on the apron." i didn't believe it for one second. After video review, he was telling the truth. Looks like he went to defend his line as DW was looking low going into turn 3. Sr. hit the apron and cam up and just clipped Mast spinning him into the fence.
I remember that race and could of sworn he went up and hit Mast on purpose. I guess now that we have You Tube, we can revisit and review.
Generally if Dale wrecked someone on purpose, he wouldn't deny it. This is the reason I believe him when he said that he didn't actually intend to spin Labonte that one time. He even admitted he hit him on purpose, he just said he didn't mean to turn him, after all. Generally, if Dale claimed something was a mistake, it really was a mistake.
This is the thing that separated Dale and the other old-school hard racers from some of the prima donnas that came along later (see: Logano). Those guys owned their actions, while Logano and his ilk never did.
Dale did anybody remember Rick Mast sat on the pole for the inaugural race at Indianapolis motor speedway!!!.. look it up it’s true...
Dan Coker ...your post beat me to it! Rick was also one of the slower cars in practice, which leads me to believe he was snookering the competition. The days of sandbagging is long gone - everyone wants to know who’s the fastest and the man to beat...
Times have certainly changed...and not necessarily for the better.
Wasn't Dale sr in p2 for that race?
Rick Mast was bad fast!
So good these shows are grate it makes me think back in the early days of the racing Winston cup series 👍♥️🥰🤗
Love it! Another great interview...Thanks guys
I met R Petty at a ARCA race in Colorado, at a small speedway. Was close enough to say hi and reach a hand shake but wasn’t expecting him and didn’t get his autograph.
I live here in Michigan about an hour from MIS, roughly 15-18 years later during a race weekend R Petty was at Cabela’s in Dundee, Michigan. Little did I know you had to be the first 300 customers with a small Petty die cast in order to get in line.
I had a unopened Wheaties Cereal box with Richard Petty right? I was there for 3-4 hours trying to get the guys autograph. It was towards the ending, I’m on the outside area looking in, Richard kept going from a Cabelas golf cart to other Cabelas merchants and sining them right. The man was 3 ft from me acting like he couldn’t hear me hey King, Richard, Hey Petty will you sign my box please. I was getting mad at the guy.
I swear I asked him a hundred times, got frustrated and told my buddy let’s go. I get halfway to the car and said Hell No! I was 5 ft away from him in Colorado while he was grand marshal and here
I finally got close enough to him again more prepared and said hey Richard will you please sign my cereal box and he did!
Now that’s a great story but not so great of an ending. First of all I asked my buddy (this was when flip phones were the new) I asked if he took a picture of me shaking his hand, him signing it, idiot didn’t do that either. That’s why not gave you the stupid camera buddy!
So with pride I put my cereal box on the top shelf inside a wooden/glass China cabinet. I hadn’t gotten it certified yet but it was in good room temperature away from dust etc.
I come home from work one day, my woman is acting strange, I asked her if she’s okay. She said she’s sorry he didn’t know. I said he didn’t know what? He didn’t know that the cereal box was Dada’s, it’s not to be touched. Yep I felt sick! I can’t blame him he was just 3 yrs old.
Luckily I am still with her today and my only baby is 13 years old today!
Thought I’d share my life as Jim Morrison would say, ..People are Strange, when you’re a Stranger.
I do have a great picture of Dale Sr standing with R Petty. Location or track is unknown but I’m assuming it was sometime between 1984-1990.
I would have to dig it up, I believe he was sponsored by the Wrangler wearing gold and blue or something like that..
I knew this was going to be a good episode because I remember listening to Rick Mast when he used to be on the Rowdy Racing Podcast with Bass Masters and Buzz Cutler back in the 2000s and always had good stories to tell.
I could listen to these stories all day long
Cannot get enough of these kinds of stories. Please keep it up. I love the DJD as a whole. But, these segments are my favorite part.
Thank you for sharing these memories with us.
I was at a race at AMS one year and Mast was on the pole. A buddy and I were sitting up around turn one/two, drinking beer out of Solo cups. Not too far into the race Earnhardt gave Mast the chrome horn and Mast slid up the track and crashed right in front of us. BAM! Looked down and my cup was full of sand and rubber!! LOL
Great interview. Binge watching all the past Dale Jr Downloads
It just doesn’t get any better than this!
I never get tired of these stories from the 90s! Back when I was just an innocent kid watching and knew nothing from behind the scenes
Great guest.. love the stories.. could be that fly on the wall all day. Thank you for sharing
Was nice to see a familiar name from childhood on the show. Thanks for the stories Rick
These are some of the greatest and most interesting/informative videos on the 'Tube! Keep 'em comin', Jr.!
Epic stories, another great Dale Jr Download!
live here close to natural bridge speedway (grew up near greenville-pickens speedway) and had no idea rick mast family was part of that, so cool to hear stories like this. thank you.
Always respect the drivers from my state. We do love racing
I love the older drivers stories so much
Just got done listening too this was so good now I'm gonna watch it 😂
Wow another great story out of the Dirty Mo camp. Thanks Jr.
I became a Rick Mast fan when the Revell Model club sent me the #1 Skoal Car for my model of the month. The car was beautiful.
Another great guest, with great stories! JR your making your notch no doubt friend!
AWESOME !!! Thank you for this content!! This was my glory years as a fan!! I totally love these old bench racing stories!! By the way Dale, my first time watching you race was the Busch series, you in the AC Delco car at the Milwaukee Mile. I remember you totally dominated that race. Thinking maybe 1998.
This is what Nascar needs a WHERE ARE THEY NOW gig just to keep us 60 years old guys interested ...love Rick Mast...
You should really listen to the whole interview on the podcast but Dale has an amazing show and gets more from Drivers but being honest then almost anyone in the history of the sport.
A father should strive to raise his sons to be better men than he is. Jr: In my opinion, you are a better man than your father. The more I watch these videos, and the more I learn about you and your dad, the more respect I have for you. Your father had faults (as do we all), but he helped raise you right.
Love how the old school drivers call their daily car a “street car”.
More of this stuff please! I love listening to the good ole guys like Rick Mast. I could listen to them tell stories all day long. As a matter of fact, as I listen to this, how about Jimmy Spencer?
I love this....great to hear Mast talk about the old times...I remember the "timely" cautions Rick caused back in the day on many occasions...we literally called them Earnhardt cautions. We knew they were tight....I never knew Rick Mast was so damn tough!...Awesome content Junior!
Jr has all the great story tellers of Nascar and you can tell he's really enjoying hearing the stories behind things he probably knew about but was too young to understand
Grew up in the same county as Rick and went to school with his daughters. Great guy and wish the CO poisoning didn't end his career short. My grandfather was friends with him and still has an old Skoal #1 car side panel in his basement.
GREAT STUFF GUYS - KEEP IT COMIN' :) !!!
“So anyhow”- Legend Rick Mast
Damn Rick is a good storyteller. Love hearing these inside baseball stories from the bygone era of NASCAR when it was the best thing on TV and on the track.
When Rick Mast was going shoot Jimmy Spencer over incident story hard my laughing but Spencer did get a few driver in NASCAR nerves .
Great story!
Man I was waiting to hear the Ralph Earnhardt story LOL this Mo Media is great thank you for sharing I have a story I would like to share one day with you I lived in Pinehurst NC and had some interactions with your dad great Memories
Loved this interview....would love to see an interview with "Terrible Tommy" Ellis while he's still around
Boy do I love Rick Mast!
Crazy that I've watched racing and seen these guys names for 30 years but didn't have the respect and knowledge of them till these interviews
The one time that Jimmy Spencer was truly scared of someone, he thought Rick was going get his gun, so he yelled at him as he was walking away. Snapped him back and who knows, it may have saved Jimmy's life and Rick from spending life in prison. I have seen some short track exchanges similar myself.
I remember liking Rick Mast when he drove the 1 and I had my diecast of him. A missing puzzle piece for me when Mast left Nascar although I was always a fan of the 28
Little E you are GREAT @ this stuff, :Love to watch you. GoodLuck kid
I watched Rick Mast race at Natural Bridge (VA) against our Ray Dovel team. I bet Rick would remember him. And yes, I know where he learned how to protect territory. That was how it was done in those days on our dirt tracks in Virginia by the likes of Tommy Bare, Buddy Armel, Bussie Walters, etc..
Ya'll need interview Sterling Marlin, Ernie Ervin please
I don't know if Sterling will ever make it on the show. That's probably a tough interview for both sides. I don't think Sterling was the biggest Sr fan either.
billy farmer ...Dale Sr. helped “Swervin’” Ernie Irvan a lot back in the day. I’m almost positive he’ll be on the Download sometime this season...
@@BurnNotice2023 Jr said on this week's show with james finch Sterling will be on later in the year
Irvan. As Neil Bonnett said on Winners, though..."Errr van" hhee
Mast is a legend. Period.
Imagine what Ricks career could have been had he gotten a shot in truly top equipment
Wow, that was a great story. Thank you for DirtyMo
I gotta say I love the stories of the Roll 'n' Rumble days of NASCAR.
Love these interviews with past drivers. They had personality, not like the glamor boys of today. The older drivers took care of themselves, the current crop just whines about everything.
Mr Steven Saxon, you are correct Sir the big E started p2 Lol outside row 1 & he got in the wall the first lap...
God damn riveting interview!!!! Can’t wait to listen to the whole podcast
What i would give for an episode with davey allison, neil bonnet, and alan kulwicki
Wow. If that had been Denny, everybody would be complaining about him crying to Rick's boss so he doesnt get wrecked by the guy he just wrecked.
Just like Like Humpy said you have something special going here don't stop it's going to be big!
WOW this is great 👍🏻 I really wish Cecil “Flash” Gordon was still alive to go on this show w/ Dale Jr.....the stories that could be told of 6 Winston Cup Championships won together & Jr. growing up....the Flying Aces (Junkyard Dogs)🙌🏻🙌🏻
