Thanks Peter. I finally got mine yesterday and OUT SHOOTING THIS MORNING!! It's Great. Makes much more use of the lenses. I have 75mm 1.8, 40-150mm 2.8 and 12-40mm 2.8. HAPPY. Much lighter bag. This is my 2nd go. I had OM D 5Mark II previous. But it wasn't near the stellar performer this new one is. Great!!!
Another great review Peter👌, i am in the UK and just received my new OM1 today the camera is on charge as the battery was completely flat so watching your insight on the features of the new OM1, I will be going out tomorrow to take lots of photos cannot wait. I think this camera is a giant step forward for MFT more than previous Olympus OM cameras. Keep up the great work Peter. Gerry
Great video. I have pre ordered my OM-1 but will not be receiving for several weeks. Shame because I go on a two week nature and wildlife trip to Cyprus on 22 March 🥲🥲. Oh Well I will still have my trusty EM1 m3 cameras. And a good excuse to go back to Cyprus again when the camera arrives 😊😏
Summarizes many of the features I also appreciate. I’m going to enjoy being able to wear sunglasses in when working around reflective water on bright days or in snow at high elevations.
The VF is amazing, I can MF my adapted lenses easily now, without any need for focus peaking, etc. Numerous other improvements as well. Haven't felt this way about a camera since receiving the original E-M5. Thank you OM/Olympus!!!
@@ForsgardPeter perhaps you have some influence as a newly minted OM System Ambassador? (Congratulations!) For the average photographer, it's hard to know how to get OM System's attention for matters such as this. I imagine this would be a popular request across the user base and a reason to stick with them, even if someone couldn't afford to upgrade now. Continuity with older products would be reason to stick with the brand.
@@michael-mvtd I hope Peter reads this because the only thing I have to follow the progress of the new company OMDS or J I Partners is that I get emails from them daily about special sales on the older model cameras. If I did own one of those cameras or did purchase the new one, I would still have a great concern for how the company is handling customer service, reliable maintenance and repair issues, and professional support.

Very cool improvements! I really can't wait to get my copy (it's on its way). The AF shots look insanely good, even through the branches! Unexpected that it would have improved that much! I'm curious about your mentioned findings regarding the ISO performance and dynamic range. It seems in the last couple of days a lot of tests came out that seem to contradict each other (no improvement, some improvement, full 2 stop improvement). So very interested in your video about that, and how you tested it out!
There are youtube videos by other ambassadors claiming the improvement in high ISO performance. But what they show are not convincing enough (for a 2 stops improvement). Besides, a recent post in 43rumor site says that the dynamic range of OM-1 is the same as E-M1 III according to the test of a website. So I am very curious and looking forward to your coming video doing tests about these.
Yeah, curious about that as well. Just about every OM System Ambassador has confirmed the marketing, but I have yet to see an independent reviewer say the same, and a view other reliable ones say the opposite, most notably DPReview and PhotonsforPhotos.

Nice summary, and I'm glad you are seeing actual image quality improvements with the OM-1. With the latest release of OM Workspace and it's AI noise removal, I'm seeing improved results with the em1-iii as well.
Dear Peter, Still looking forward to getting a more advanced camera from OMD under OM-2 for more advanced video recording, 8K Resolution, better stabilisation and update the auto focus system.
Thanks for this overview, Peter. My first foray into Olympus was the EM5 Mark III and I quite like that camera. The OM-1 has me interested though and I wonder if you’ll be doing any kind of comparison video between the two cameras. I know in general the OM1 is a better, more full-featured camera, but I’m curious on your thoughts of jumping from the Mark III to the OM-1.
I say that it all depends on what you are going to photograph. Over all, general photography the difference is not that much. If you need faster camera for fast action, sports etc. then it makes sense to upgrade.
Jim go to the UA-cam channel of Gordon Lang who gives a stellar 40 minute comparison between EM 5 mark II and EM 5 mark III and then compares both of them to the OM D Mark II. And then comes back with a very good wrap up on the group. It's pack jammed with info. Worth your time watching it and taking notes.
Peter, now I know why you traded in your other brand cameras! The sun finally shined in Sydney today so I took my 1Mk11 for an outing, seeing I haven't finished setting up my OM-1. Now I'm keep to get that done so I can get cracking at 120fps!
I'm going to wait awhile and continue to watch every video about this new camera but it sure looks good enough that I will invest in MFT more fully. I have a Mk II body as well as two Panasonic bodies, G7 & 9, as well as the Pen F. I also have some of the Pro lenses. Overall, I really like the Olympus system and see it as my future because of the weight and size compared to APS-C and FF but have not committed fully by buying into the telephoto lenses like the 300 and 150-400. I do a lot of bird photography and auto racing and I have been lugging around the big heavy systems a long time but as I get older, I'm not so excited about doing that anymore.
Hi Peter, I'm interested in this camera because of underwater photography and video, therefor the high iso abilities are very important to me. Can you make a small video comparison of the OM1 and EM1-3 using C4k, 25p, in the their best codecs and show iso 3200 and up so I can compare the noise levels? Please also raise the shadows in the video editor because UA-cam wil otherwise compress and clean up the noise. Thanks! 2: when is the underwater housing comming? 3: How does the Leica 10-25 F1,7 work with the OM1? - The lens I would love to use for underwater, low light and landscape work.
A video about video content is coming. I do not know when the underwater housing is coming. I will ask OMDS. Most likely it will work ok with some exceptions. Hi Peter, this new beast looks very promising. Do you know how Lumix lenses work with this OM1? In particular Leica 100-400mm? Does it maintain dual stabilization or IBIS and the lens work separately?
Hi Peter, what part of this two-stop noise improvement comes from the sensor alone and what comes from the software? Is there any noise improvement compared to older sensors, when using independent RAW development software ?

I just picked up my OM1 today after work. It's charging now. Was interesting to find cable grip and cable clamp for the charge cable. I wonder do they think the USB C charging port is ripe to be damaged? Makes me wonder. Protecting themselves from warranty claims?
Those cable holders are quit common when using the HDMI port for external monitors. It also secures the cable if you are using the USB charging/power when using the camera. The cable does not come off by accident.
Good afternoon, I just want to see if you can make me a recommendation for one of these 2 cameras, there is a difference of 300 dollars, it is worth paying the difference in use equipment.
There might many reasons why videos are blurry, but I do not think the software is one. Unless it takes time for the videos to render properly and the video can be seen in full resolution.
I got my hands on one last Thursday and it was amazing. I use bluetooth file transfer a lot and it was so much faster on the OM-1 as compared to my EM5II. The grip is my favourite feature. Super comfortable in my hands and button/dial locations are perfect for me. Hoping to take it out this weekend for a full battery of tests in the mountains.

Just got my OM-1 and its fantastic! But I have problem with raw processing. Its supported by Lightroom but images there get really grainy. If I process it through OM Workspace all is fine but there are limited opportunities there. Do you have experience of this and what software do you use for RAW processing for OM-1?
OM Workspace is the best software for OM-1 files. I have not seen any differences that actually matter. Do you have the latest version of Lightroom Classic?
It turns out that LR applies 40 steps of sharpening as std (I think std should be 0 on all adjustments) and that really destroys the image. So without sharpening it looks better but I must admit OM WS does a much better job with details.

It is hard to say. For landscape photographers it does not offer that much new. LiveND64 is maybe something. For action it does. The subject recognition is improved a lot. AF works better for moving subjects.

LiveND works only when making photographs. Dynamic range is about one stop. Is there a mistake in the video? I have not tested the dynamic range in video. It has OM400Log and HLG modes that can produce more DR.
Hey Peter! Great video! Thanks for doing this! I can't wait to get mine and try it out, here it is completely backordered. I try to only buy from local camera stores and all of them have sold out of their preorder copies. So, I have to wait until the second shipping wave. A couple things I'm interested in finding out is if the video settings can now be assigned to the custom modes. I'm also interested in finding out if the 8-bit video is better than the previous 8-bit video since it now has a new sensor. Thanks for helping!

Peter, when I first came across Olympus groups on FB and also got introduced to different Olympus Ambassadors a few years ago, I was quite perplexed when I noticed that similar workshops to the one you mention today EXCLUDED South Africa ... why?? Is there anyway that your workshop on the OM 1 can in some way be sent to me in South Africa? I find it such a strange practice ... I have ordered the OM 1 and should have it sometime next month. I loved your review and as a wildlife - and specially a bird photographer I am very excited about this camera. As always, I look forward to your next video and thank you for the work you put into them.
The PD usb charging is a godsend. I was out in a hide for a birding the other day. For some reasons, the extra battery that cam with the camera delivery didn’t come till later this month so I was quite worried that one battery couldn’t make it for an extended period of use so I charged it while shooting through a power bank and it worked perfectly. I managed a half day shooting and when I finished shooting, the battery is still 100% charged so it is quite convenient.
Hello Peter, do you know if OM SYSTEM will contue "updating" the rest of the models > the "5 "and the "10"? Or will they only have this quite expensive model? Thanks and regards from Barcelona.
I think they will. They just released new firmware updates to quite a few cameras. E-M5 MKIII and E-M10 MKIV were also included. It added some improvements in AF performant when using primes. Now it is also possible to use 40-150mm f4 for focus stacking. (not E-M10 MKIV)
Pleased to hear that you are now part of the OMD-S team, Peter. I am calling in at my local (85 mile round trip) London Camera Exchange at 0900 hrs tomorrow, in order to collect my two OM1 bodies. No word on my 40 - 150mm f4, battery grip and charger as yet. Still, that is a minor issue. I also receive two extra batteries free of charge, and an extended warranty due to pre - ordering.

We here in Australia got ours on 1st March. For once we beat you Northerners. As an aside,people have been saying that Topaz Denoise doesn't work on the files yet. I have Topaz as a Lightroom plugin, I export high ISO files as Tiff files from LR to Topaz DeNoise, it works just fine in cleaning the image. I contacted Topaz and they agreed that a Tiff from LR will be handled the same as any Tiff . The Raw update will be coming when more cameras are out there. Also, Sharpen AI and Gigapixel work as well, so long as you export Tiff files. Keep up your excellent work.
Only one battery worries me, but a spare with a power bank will suffice - particularly if you are a while in the field shooting wildlife, for example. Nice Goshawk picture!
Many thanks for this Peter and it looks like it's going to become possibly the 'benchmark' for m4/3rds still photography cameras for sometime to come. I look forward to more detailed reviews from yourself on the OM-1 in the following weeks. I have an EM5 mark III myself, which I love, so do you think I'd notice the technical, quality and added features it offers if I was able to buy to an OM-1 bearing in mind the current UK price and possible trade in value for my EM5 mark III ?
There are a few benefits over the E-M5 MKIII. One is the speed, EVF, better IQ and better AF etc. How much it will improve your photography is hard to say. It is about what you like to photograph.
Hey Peter, I'm really want to jump ship from my Sony A9 back to MFT system, but I really want to use HHHR feature for portraits and wildlife, especially to utilize extra DR. Do you think that is a feasible idea??
Hi Peter, how does the shutter button compare to the OM-D EM1 ii? The latter is rather undefined between pressing it halfway and actually taking a picture. I like the EM5 ii shutter button a lot better than that of the EM1 ii. The same goes for the two main wheels. How is the OM1 in that respect? Finally, is it suitable for people with glasses? The Panasonic G9 shines in this respect, can the OM1 keep up? Kind regards, Luuk
The shutter button feels juts fine. No accidental shots so far. the front wheel is more like it is in E-M1X. I will get used to it. I use glasses and it is not problem at least for me. i am so used to it.
I'd love to get a RAW file that I could edit to test the dynamic range. The OM1 looks an excellent camera especially with the 10-25mm Panasonic lens. Does the OM1 compete with a fullframe camera with dynamic range.
Hi peter, for me I just returned the OM1. I was given a loan of the OM1 to test before buying. I wanted the OM1 for bird photography. I shoot a lot at 4000 ISO because of tree canopy reducing light and I wanted to see for myself the improvement on the ISO performance and noise reduction in the field. Sadly from my tests I saw very LITTLE improvements in the ISO performance. For me if I continued with the OM1 purchase I would have found I still need to do a lot of post processing in Topaz for noise. How did you find it? For me I could not see the point of upgrading from my OM-D E-m1 MkII to the OM1 if I am still going to need to do a lot of noise reduction in post. Thanks for your views cheers from Australia
I did see an improvement, but yes DeNoising is still needed if I use high ISO. For bird photography there are so much improvement in AF and speed that I think it is with getting for bird photography. For other type of photography E-M1 MKII is just fine.
Thank you for this reply and for Peter's response. I think you have both saved me some money as I presently use the em1 ii and noise reduction in Topaz. It sounds like I should make the jump to the new Fujifilm H2 when it comes out, if its noise characteristics are better.
Hi there, can you assign the pen f mono profile 2 in workspace to the raw files of the new camera. Does the om1 have the b/w profile in its settings maybe ?
I have (2) OM-1's and (1) E-M1 Mk iii. I have noticed a difference in focusing speed *_favoring the Mk iii_* . Both OM-1 cameras, in AF-S, seem to quickly run through the entire focusing range before providing the "Green Box" indicating focus. The Mk iii does not do this, and therefore, IMHO, focuses faster than both of my OM-1's. It would appear to me that the Mk iii is using phase detect AF and the OM-1's are not. Can you confirm or refute this? Is there a setting I've missed? It does not seem to change with lens used. Assistance greatly appreciated!
I did not have any problems with OM-1s AF. It worked a bit differnet than E-M1 Mark III. Sinbe I do not have OM-1 or E-M1 MarkIII any more I cannot test it now.

The bird recognition is awesome, my G9 failed terribly again last weekend. If you ever get the chance, I would be very interested in tele shoots through fences. I was in a wolf park this weekend and the G9's autofocus failed there as well, I had to use manual focus, which is a bit annoying with running wolves. :D
Hey Peter, thank you for that overview. Can you save video settings to the custom dial? If not can you assign slomo to a button so you can easily switch from regular recording in 4K to slomo in HD? Thanks.
My quick thinking came up with a work around. The Custom settings seems to save the video settings. You could assign a button to turn on a Custom setting and then you will have the desired settings for video. I need to check how the video recording is when the camera is on lest say M-mode.

I'm coming from a Lumix G9 where I have custom video settings saved and I'm not sure how big of a pain it would be on the OM-1 but the extra features would make it worth it, I'm sure. USB charging = time lapses 😊 mainly the only time always power is needed 😊 Only thing I don't like about it, is the lack of produced units against the pre-orders 😅 still waiting for my om 1 😊
Peter; can you save your video settings to the Custom Buttons as you can with your photo settings? I'm asking as the OM-1 Manual (see page 56, Save Settings 1) appears to have the same text from the previous EM-1 M3 manual that says (Choose a mode other than Video ...). This may be an error in the OM-1 Manual.
I was hoping that too. There is a work around. When saving setting to C1, 2,3 or 4 also the video settings are saved. What I have done is having the video settings on C3 and C4. C1 and C2 are for photography.
That is very helpful Peter and I enjoyed the video . It will be interesting to see if some of these new features are put in the 10 series at a later date . The reason I hope they do that is because I hope they retain the flip up/down screen as I have no interest in video . I hope that the new 10 series camera has not only the adaptability of the mkii , but also is given a limited high resolution capability for photographers who want a picture only camera . Whilst that wish list may be ambitious , we should be pressing the manufacturer to giving us more at this time , especially if they want to retain our interest and captivate new users to the system . @@ForsgardPeter Peter, I think the global crisis we are seeing unfold is going to hit camera manufactures like other industries and unless they have a product that is close to bring to market , we may not see another series 10 camera anytime soon. If I were OMDS then I would be looking developing two lines - the pen series and the OM series . Entry cameras would appeal to those wanting a light carry anywhere camera and for those wanting a mid range body I would bring the PenF back in a weather sealed body and with a tilting screen and leave the OM cameras with the swing out screen . If they did that then the Pen F could be a very nice photographers camera and something that pen users could aspire to if they did not want the bulk of an OM camera . I very much hope that global recession will not kill off the camera market and leave only pro cameras and an entry model , as that will very much limit us to using our phones much more . I have no crystal ball , but I suspect manufacturing in general is going to have a pretty tough time ahead and rationalisation may be the only way forward to survive .
It is curious that some tests (dpreview, etc) claim there is no improvement in DR or high ISO noise, while several testers (OMDS ambassadors, etc) say there is an improvement. Could it be that you are talking about different things? E.g, that the new sensor has a noise type, etc that makes it possible to draw more information from the images?
I think we have done it a bit different way and talk about a bit different thing. I see an improvement if I lift up the shadows. The new camera is better. I will do a full test on this later.
I'm afraid I'm somewhat out of this discussion because I'm still shooting with my various original Four Thirds cameras which BTW I still get a lot of pleasure using but I'm straying from my point here. I don't do a lot of telephoto work, tending towards the wide angle end. A principal reason for this is that I am permanently disabled by my dysfunctional left arm - I am left handed - and I find big heavy lenses difficult to handle properly. I have 2 telezoom lenses, the kit 40-150mm f3.5.version ,+ 75-300mm. The 40-150mm is my favourite for obvious reasons. I don't mind that it's a bit slower than the Pro lenses since the small size is for me at any rate a worthwhile tradeoff but I would appreciate Pro-grade optics. I can see the difference between the grades, esp. since all my other lenses are Pro versions. Obviously Four Thirds has been and left us ( a decision I still lament) but I am a little disappointed that no-one appears to have spotted the break in the chain for a small but Pro quality telezoom that is easy to use and carry and that gap is just as wide in MFT as it was in the original FT. I do hope to upgrade my existing system with an MFT body at least. I think I'll be happy to settle for the adapter for the rest of my glass since I no longer work professionally and am enjoying doing my own thing in my retirement years 😀!
Peter: I am a wildlife photographer and as such am very interested in understanding how the OM1 performs in low light, with fast shutter speeds and higher ISO settings. My wildlife photographer colleagues rave about the Sony A1 for fast subject autofocus acquisition and excellent resolution and dynamic range in low light. If you are aware, I am curious as to how the OM1 would compare to the Sony A1 in this regard. Thank you. PJI

Peter, do you know if OMDS has any plans to bring the new menu system to previous-generation models like the E-M1X? I’m still hoping that starry sky AF and dog/cat recognition will come to the E-M1X in maybe a future v3 firmware update (and dog/cat recognition to E-M1iii too), and it’d be great if the new, improved menu system also came to these previous-gen models. After all, Olympus is still selling them.
I agree about the menu system. It would be great if they did bring that to older cameras. specially to E-M1X and E-M1 MKIII. The subject recognition AI is only for E-M1X and OM-1 if I have understood correctly. E-M1 MKIII does not have the processing power.
@@ForsgardPeter Thanks. Yes, of course; I was forgetting that subject recognition wasn’t on the E-M1iii. The E-M1X is the camera I mainly use, so is the one I’m most interested in, but the E-M1iii is a bit newer. It would be nice for both to continue to get updates, including the new menu system.

The price is not defined by the sensor size. It is about the specs for the genre it is for. I bet OM-1 is a better for wildlife, bird and outdoor adventure photography that those too. Both XT-4 and Z6II are great cameras no doubt about that, but for different purpose.
1) what is the best configuration for start skies 2) live light, live bulb mode how does it work 3) internal focus stacking 4) how accurate is the gps 5) is the internal jpeg conversion destructive or does it produce another file 6) does the screen have a count down to see the time when doing long exposure, bulb and so on?
1. Manual mode, Starry AF 2. LiveComp is adding info if the area becomes lighter. Live Bulb adds info to whole area. The is a timer and you see how long your exposure is. Bulb works like bulb works. As long as the shutter button is pressed it will be making the exposure. Bulb does not have a timer. 3. Yes it can stack images. From 3-15 images can be selected. 4. There is no GPS in the camera. You need to use the OI.Share App. 5. It makes another file 6. Check answer 2 I hope this helps.

The VF is amazing, I can MF my adapted lenses easily now, without any need for focus peaking, etc. Numerous other improvements as well.

For the average photographer, it's hard to know how to get OM System's attention for matters such as this. I imagine this would be a popular request across the user base and a reason to stick with them, even if someone couldn't afford to upgrade now. Continuity with older products would be reason to stick with the brand.
@@michael-mvtd I hope Peter reads this because the only thing I have to follow the progress of the new company OMDS or J I Partners is that I get emails from them daily about special sales on the older model cameras. If I did own one of those cameras or did purchase the new one, I would still have a great concern for how the company is handling customer service, reliable maintenance and repair issues, and professional support.

I'm curious about your mentioned findings regarding the ISO performance and dynamic range. It seems in the last couple of days a lot of tests came out that seem to contradict each other (no improvement, some improvement, full 2 stop improvement). @@ForsgardPeter the different RAW converters that people are using are not helping this confusion - Lightroom (ACR) looks a bit odd to be honest.
There are youtube videos by other ambassadors claiming the improvement in high ISO performance. But what they show are not convincing enough (for a 2 stops improvement). Besides, a recent post in 43rumor site says that the dynamic range of OM-1 is the same as E-M1 III according to the test of a website.
So I am very curious and looking forward to your coming video doing tests about these.
Yeah, curious about that as well. Just about every OM System Ambassador has confirmed the marketing, but I have yet to see an independent reviewer say the same, and a view other reliable ones say the opposite, most notably DPReview and PhotonsforPhotos.

Nice summary, and I'm glad you are seeing actual image quality improvements with the OM-1. With the latest release of OM Workspace and it's AI noise removal, I'm seeing improved results with the em1-iii as well.

Thanks for this overview, Peter. My first foray into Olympus was the EM5 Mark III and I quite like that camera. The OM-1 has me interested though and I wonder if you’ll be doing any kind of comparison video between the two cameras. I know in general the OM1 is a better, more full-featured camera, but I’m curious on your thoughts of jumping from the Mark III to the OM-1.
I say that it all depends on what you are going to photograph. Over all, general photography the difference is not that much. If you need faster camera for fast action, sports etc. then it makes sense to upgrade.
Jim go to the UA-cam channel of Gordon Lang who gives a stellar 40 minute comparison between EM 5 mark II and EM 5 mark III and then compares both of them to the OM D Mark II. And then comes back with a very good wrap up on the group. It's pack jammed with info. Worth your time watching it and taking notes.
Peter, now I know why you traded in your other brand cameras! The sun finally shined in Sydney today so I took my 1Mk11 for an outing, seeing I haven't finished setting up my OM-1. Now I'm keep to get that done so I can get cracking at 120fps!
I'm going to wait awhile and continue to watch every video about this new camera but it sure looks good enough that I will invest in MFT more fully. I have a Mk II body as well as two Panasonic bodies, G7 & 9, as well as the Pen F. I also have some of the Pro lenses. Overall, I really like the Olympus system and see it as my future because of the weight and size compared to APS-C and FF but have not committed fully by buying into the telephoto lenses like the 300 and 150-400. I do a lot of bird photography and auto racing and I have been lugging around the big heavy systems a long time but as I get older, I'm not so excited about doing that anymore.

Can you make a small video comparison of the OM1 and EM1-3 using C4k, 25p, in the their best codecs and show iso 3200 and up so I can compare the noise levels? A video about video content is coming. I do not know when the underwater housing is coming. I will ask OMDS. Most likely it will work ok with some exceptions. Most likely you need use either lens IS or IBIS. Have not tested it, but that is the way it works previously.

I just picked up my OM1 today after work. It's charging now. Was interesting to find cable grip and cable clamp for the charge cable. I wonder do they think the USB C charging port is ripe to be damaged? Makes me wonder. Protecting themselves from warranty claims?
Those cable holders are quit common when using the HDMI port for external monitors. It also secures the cable if you are using the USB charging/power when using the camera. The cable does not come off by accident.

I use Adobe software. I have made a few LUTs with Photoshop. Works quite well.

There might many reasons why videos are blurry, but I do not think the software is one. Unless it takes time for the videos to render properly and the video can be seen in full resolution.
I got my hands on one last Thursday and it was amazing. I use bluetooth file transfer a lot and it was so much faster on the OM-1 as compared to my EM5II. The grip is my favourite feature. Super comfortable in my hands and button/dial locations are perfect for me. Hoping to take it out this weekend for a full battery of tests in the mountains.

Just got my OM-1 and its fantastic! But I have problem with raw processing. Its supported by Lightroom but images there get really grainy. If I process it through OM Workspace all is fine but there are limited opportunities there. Do you have experience of this and what software do you use for RAW processing for OM-1?
OM Workspace is the best software for OM-1 files. I have not seen any differences that actually matter. Do you have the latest version of Lightroom Classic?
@@ForsgardPeter I have the latest version (Mac OS) and the LR raw processed image looks terrible compared to OM WS or Capture One.
It turns out that LR applies 40 steps of sharpening as std (I think std should be 0 on all adjustments) and that really destroys the image. So without sharpening it looks better but I must admit OM WS does a much better job with details.

It is hard to say. For landscape photographers it does not offer that much new. LiveND64 is maybe something. For action it does. The subject recognition is improved a lot. AF works better for moving subjects.

* About the dynamic range, you say +2stops, but what is the number ? 12 stops ?
* Is the dynamic range is same for photo and vidéo ?
LiveND works only when making photographs. Dynamic range is about one stop. Is there a mistake in the video? I have not tested the dynamic range in video. It has OM400Log and HLG modes that can produce more DR.
Hey Peter! Great video! Thanks for doing this! I can't wait to get mine and try it out, here it is completely backordered. I try to only buy from local camera stores and all of them have sold out of their preorder copies. So, I have to wait until the second shipping wave. A couple things I'm interested in finding out is if the video settings can now be assigned to the custom modes. I'm also interested in finding out if the 8-bit video is better than the previous 8-bit video since it now has a new sensor. Thanks for helping!

I would go with the new OM-1 if it fits your budget. E-1X is also a good choice, but I would go with newer one.

Peter, when I first came across Olympus groups on FB and also got introduced to different Olympus Ambassadors a few years ago, I was quite perplexed when I noticed that similar workshops to the one you mention today EXCLUDED South Africa ... why?? Is there anyway that your workshop on the OM 1 can in some way be sent to me in South Africa? I find it such a strange practice ... I have ordered the OM 1 and should have it sometime next month. I loved your review and as a wildlife - and specially a bird photographer I am very excited about this camera. As always, I look forward to your next video and thank you for the work you put into them.

The PD usb charging is a godsend. I was out in a hide for a birding the other day. For some reasons, the extra battery that cam with the camera delivery didn’t come till later this month so I was quite worried that one battery couldn’t make it for an extended period of use so I charged it while shooting through a power bank and it worked perfectly. I managed a half day shooting and when I finished shooting, the battery is still 100% charged so it is quite convenient.

I think they will. They just released new firmware updates to quite a few cameras. E-M5 MKIII and E-M10 MKIV were also included. It added some improvements in AF performant when using primes. Now it is also possible to use 40-150mm f4 for focus stacking. (not E-M10 MKIV)

No word on my 40 - 150mm f4, battery grip and charger as yet. Still, that is a minor issue. I also receive two extra batteries free of charge, and an extended warranty due to pre - ordering.

We here in Australia got ours on 1st March. For once we beat you Northerners. As an aside,people have been saying that Topaz Denoise doesn't work on the files yet. I have Topaz as a Lightroom plugin, I export high ISO files as Tiff files from LR to Topaz DeNoise, it works just fine in cleaning the image. I contacted Topaz and they agreed that a Tiff from LR will be handled the same as any Tiff . The Raw update will be coming when more cameras are out there. Also, Sharpen AI and Gigapixel work as well, so long as you export Tiff files. Keep up your excellent work.

Only one battery worries me, but a spare with a power bank will suffice - particularly if you are a while in the field shooting wildlife, for example. Nice Goshawk picture!

I have an EM5 mark III myself, which I love, so do you think I'd notice the technical, quality and added features it offers if I was able to buy to an OM-1 bearing in mind the current UK price and possible trade in value for my EM5 mark III ?
There are a few benefits over the E-M5 MKIII. One is the speed, EVF, better IQ and better AF etc. How much it will improve your photography is hard to say. It is about what you like to photograph.

Yes you can. It works better now because the camera is so much faster. Of course if the subject moves a lot then there might be some problems.
Can I turn on the camera with just plug in the charging port to the camera without put the battery inside the camera?

Hi Peter, how does the shutter button compare to the OM-D EM1 ii? The latter is rather undefined between pressing it halfway and actually taking a picture. I like the EM5 ii shutter button a lot better than that of the EM1 ii. The same goes for the two main wheels. How is the OM1 in that respect? Finally, is it suitable for people with glasses? The Panasonic G9 shines in this respect, can the OM1 keep up? Kind regards, Luuk
The shutter button feels juts fine. No accidental shots so far. the front wheel is more like it is in E-M1X. I will get used to it. I use glasses and it is not problem at least for me. i am so used to it.

Hi peter, for me I just returned the OM1. I was given a loan of the OM1 to test before buying. I wanted the OM1 for bird photography. I shoot a lot at 4000 ISO because of tree canopy reducing light and I wanted to see for myself the improvement on the ISO performance and noise reduction in the field. Sadly from my tests I saw very LITTLE improvements in the ISO performance. For me if I continued with the OM1 purchase I would have found I still need to do a lot of post processing in Topaz for noise. How did you find it? For me I could not see the point of upgrading from my OM-D E-m1 MkII to the OM1 if I am still going to need to do a lot of noise reduction in post. Thanks for your views cheers from Australia
I did see an improvement, but yes DeNoising is still needed if I use high ISO. For bird photography there are so much improvement in AF and speed that I think it is with getting for bird photography. For other type of photography E-M1 MKII is just fine.
Thank you for this reply and for Peter's response. I think you have both saved me some money as I presently use the em1 ii and noise reduction in Topaz. It sounds like I should make the jump to the new Fujifilm H2 when it comes out, if its noise characteristics are better.
Hi there, can you assign the pen f mono profile 2 in workspace to the raw files of the new camera. Does the om1 have the b/w profile in its settings maybe ?
There is monochrome picture profile with the same settings than before.
Is the stabilization with the 300 f4 7 stops or 6 stops
I am not 100% sure, but I would say it is 7. With the new 150-400mm f4.5 it is 8 stops.
I have (2) OM-1's and (1) E-M1 Mk iii.
I have noticed a difference in focusing speed *_favoring the Mk iii_* .
Both OM-1 cameras, in AF-S, seem to quickly run through the entire focusing range before providing the "Green Box" indicating focus.
The Mk iii does not do this, and therefore, IMHO, focuses faster than both of my OM-1's.
It would appear to me that the Mk iii is using phase detect AF and the OM-1's are not.
Can you confirm or refute this? Is there a setting I've missed? It does not seem to change with lens used.

I did not have any problems with OM-1s AF. It worked a bit differnet than E-M1 Mark III. Sinbe I do not have OM-1 or E-M1 MarkIII any more I cannot test it now.

Just to say shortly. It was the video features that made me switch.
The bird recognition is awesome, my G9 failed terribly again last weekend. If you ever get the chance, I would be very interested in tele shoots through fences. I was in a wolf park this weekend and the G9's autofocus failed there as well, I had to use manual focus, which is a bit annoying with running wolves. :D
Hey Peter, thank you for that overview. Can you save video settings to the custom dial? If not can you assign slomo to a button so you can easily switch from regular recording in 4K to slomo in HD? Thanks.
My quick thinking came up with a work around. The Custom settings seems to save the video settings. You could assign a button to turn on a Custom setting and then you will have the desired settings for video. I need to check how the video recording is when the camera is on lest say M-mode.

Peter; can you save your video settings to the Custom Buttons as you can with your photo settings? I'm asking as the OM-1 Manual (see page 56, Save Settings 1) appears to have the same text from the previous EM-1 M3 manual that says (Choose a mode other than Video ...). This may be an error in the OM-1 Manual.
If Video is on from Mode Dial you cannot save he settings. The only way to do it, is to save them with the other settings.
That is disappointing; OMDS should have included this capability.
I was hoping that too. There is a work around. When saving setting to C1, 2,3 or 4 also the video settings are saved. What I have done is having the video settings on C3 and C4. C1 and C2 are for photography.
That is a good work around. Maybe OMDS will add this feature in a future firmware update.
That is very helpful Peter and I enjoyed the video . It will be interesting to see if some of these new features are put in the 10 series at a later date . The reason I hope they do that is because I hope they retain the flip up/down screen as I have no interest in video . I hope that the new 10 series camera has not only the adaptability of the mkii , but also is given a limited high resolution capability for photographers who want a picture only camera . Whilst that wish list may be ambitious , we should be pressing the manufacturer to giving us more at this time , especially if they want to retain our interest and captivate new users to the system .

Peter, I think the global crisis we are seeing unfold is going to hit camera manufactures like other industries and unless they have a product that is close to bring to market , we may not see another series 10 camera anytime soon.
If I were OMDS then I would be looking developing two lines - the pen series and the OM series . Entry cameras would appeal to those wanting a light carry anywhere camera and for those wanting a mid range body I would bring the PenF back in a weather sealed body and with a tilting screen and leave the OM cameras with the swing out screen . If they did that then the Pen F could be a very nice photographers camera and something that pen users could aspire to if they did not want the bulk of an OM camera .
I very much hope that global recession will not kill off the camera market and leave only pro cameras and an entry model , as that will very much limit us to using our phones much more .
I have no crystal ball , but I suspect manufacturing in general is going to have a pretty tough time ahead and rationalisation may be the only way forward to survive .
It is curious that some tests (dpreview, etc) claim there is no improvement in DR or high ISO noise, while several testers (OMDS ambassadors, etc) say there is an improvement. Could it be that you are talking about different things? E.g, that the new sensor has a noise type, etc that makes it possible to draw more information from the images?
I think we have done it a bit different way and talk about a bit different thing. I see an improvement if I lift up the shadows. The new camera is better. I will do a full test on this later.

Unfortunately no built in GPS. You can use OI.Share app for that.
I'm afraid I'm somewhat out of this discussion because I'm still shooting with my various original Four Thirds cameras which BTW I still get a lot of pleasure using but I'm straying from my point here. I don't do a lot of telephoto work, tending towards the wide angle end. A principal reason for this is that I am permanently disabled by my dysfunctional left arm - I am left handed - and I find big heavy lenses difficult to handle properly. I have 2 telezoom lenses, the kit 40-150mm f3.5.version ,+ 75-300mm. The 40-150mm is my favourite for obvious reasons. I don't mind that it's a bit slower than the Pro lenses since the small size is for me at any rate a worthwhile tradeoff but I would appreciate Pro-grade optics. I can see the difference between the grades, esp. since all my other lenses are Pro versions. Obviously Four Thirds has been and left us ( a decision I still lament) but I am a little disappointed that no-one appears to have spotted the break in the chain for a small but Pro quality telezoom that is easy to use and carry and that gap is just as wide in MFT as it was in the original FT. I do hope to upgrade my existing system with an MFT body at least. I think I'll be happy to settle for the adapter for the rest of my glass since I no longer work professionally and am enjoying doing my own thing in my retirement years 😀!

Peter: I am a wildlife photographer and as such am very interested in understanding how the OM1 performs in low light, with fast shutter speeds and higher ISO settings. My wildlife photographer colleagues rave about the Sony A1 for fast subject autofocus acquisition and excellent resolution and dynamic range in low light. If you are aware, I am curious as to how the OM1 would compare to the Sony A1 in this regard. Thank you. PJI
I have not tested Sony A1. It hard to say. It also a camera with a totally different price range.
Hey Peter, I thought someone mention it that if you use the camera with older slower cards for video it will still split into different files, but it's not some important if it's correct.

Peter, do you know if OMDS has any plans to bring the new menu system to previous-generation models like the E-M1X? I’m still hoping that starry sky AF and dog/cat recognition will come to the E-M1X in maybe a future v3 firmware update (and dog/cat recognition to E-M1iii too), and it’d be great if the new, improved menu system also came to these previous-gen models. After all, Olympus is still selling them.
I agree about the menu system. It would be great if they did bring that to older cameras. specially to E-M1X and E-M1 MKIII. The subject recognition AI is only for E-M1X and OM-1 if I have understood correctly. E-M1 MKIII does not have the processing power.
@@ForsgardPeter Thanks. Yes, of course; I was forgetting that subject recognition wasn’t on the E-M1iii. The E-M1X is the camera I mainly use, so is the one I’m most interested in, but the E-M1iii is a bit newer. It would be nice for both to continue to get updates, including the new menu system.
As I understand there is little difference in image noise at base iso and up to 800?
The difference starts to show at higher ISO.

Congrats! That is big improvement. E-M10 MK IV is a good camera but OM-1 is even better.
@@ForsgardPeter yes I was used my em10 since 2015, many things are new for me, next I will buy the 12-100, the bundle than will be more heavier, but only 1 lens for travelling
I can't understand why is a micro 4/3 cam more expensive than the xt4 or z6 ii
The price is not defined by the sensor size. It is about the specs for the genre it is for. I bet OM-1 is a better for wildlife, bird and outdoor adventure photography that those too. Both XT-4 and Z6II are great cameras no doubt about that, but for different purpose.

1. Manual mode, Starry AF
2. LiveComp is adding info if the area becomes lighter. Live Bulb adds info to whole area. The is a timer and you see how long your exposure is. Bulb works like bulb works. As long as the shutter button is pressed it will be making the exposure. Bulb does not have a timer.
3. Yes it can stack images. From 3-15 images can be selected.
4. There is no GPS in the camera. You need to use the OI.Share App.
