    So, asides from your relationship with Olympus/OM System, what made you pick this camera over other similarly priced or cheaper cameras? A7 IV, X-H2s, X-T5, R6, S2, Z7, etc.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  Рік тому +104

      1 - I've been shooting with OM System for years now. I own a lot of accessories and all the PRO lenses for the system. It would be a massive investment to jump to a different system to ultimately do the same job. (more on this in point 8)
      2 - I still believe that the weather sealing and ruggedness of these cameras beat all other brands. I've taken my OM-D through places I wouldn't dare take other cameras. I've shot at -35ºC at 6500m and +45ºC in sandstorms. Stood under waterfalls, shot in storms no matter where... these cameras just work. They don't overheat or break... not one OM-D body has ever failed me. I've slipped and fallen ONTO my E-M1X in Iceland on a glacier... nothing. (the lens broke a little though).
      3 - Features - The HandHeld Hi-Res shot feature is amazing and I use it a lot and more importantly the stabilisation. No other brands comes close. I can handhold several second long exposures. I haven't shot a photo on a tripod in YEARS. Years of travel without a tripod is amazing!
      4 - The portability aspect. Yes, the full-frame cameras have gotten smaller. But the lenses simply can't compete with micro 4/3. Especially the difference with the wider and telephoto lenses. I own full-frame lenses for my cinema camera and each time I'm surprised at how much chunkier and heavier they are.
      5 - The price. Full-frame bodies might have gotten cheap. But lenses on a PRO level, with the weather sealing, build quality and most importantly: the sharpness level of the OM System PRO lenses (Olympus is a lens manufacturing company after-all) can't compete.
      6 - Ergonomics. I love how this camera sits in my hands. Not too big, not too small. I've held Sonys and hate how uncomfortable they are.
      7 - I switched to Olympus many years ago for all the above reasons (and more) and shooting with the E-M1 (Mark I) back then rekindled the joy of photography. I was excited to take my little camera out and shoot. Something I didn't feel with my Canon 1D Mark III back then. This is super subjective... but a camera that is a joy to use, always works and ultimately makes me go out more, be more creative and shoot better photos is the one I want to / should be using.
      8 - Photography, as a professional, is about more than just the choice of technology. It's about the business side of things too. A relationship with a brand that trusts my visions and supports me with whatever crazy project I come up with is worth maintaining. And by 'brand' I mean the people behind the brand that I have had the pleasure of working with for years now. Even when a different brand comes out with a new piece of kit that might be 10% better in some tiny aspect... ultimately, that 10% or that new feature won't change my work.
      Sure, if someone re-invents the wheel... maybe I'd consider it.
      When I see all the UA-camr reviewers that jump ship every time a new piece of kit is out just to get the views and money... that, to my eyes, isn't a smart way of doing business. It's money, and not relationship driven and not a long-term sustainable way of treating people. Just my 2 cents.
      I know that the last point (8) is super subjective, of course. But many years ago I felt like I could do better work with Olympus, so I sold everything and went for it. Not only did I do this because I could finally travel with all the kit I needed to shoot surf - but I also knew / hoped that there was a relationship I could build with this brand. And - 8 years later - this was one of the best professional decision of my life.
      Gear isn't everything. It's the work we do with it. So, if you are looking at a new piece of kit... just ask yourself if it will make you a better photographer and if it will help your business on the long run. And these decisions are just as subjective and personal as they are objective.
      Sorry for the lengthy response, but I hope you now understand where I'm coming from.

      @@chriseyrewalker It may have been a lengthy reply, but ALL of your points were well developed, valid and presented in such a way that even the most ardent critic of Olympus will, if they are fair and reasonable, respect.
      I am a Nikon shooter and just recently purchased a used Olympus OMD EM-1 Mark II and several new lenses to include the 12-40 f2.8 PRO, the 8-25 F4 Pro and the 40-250 f4 Pro and have been very impressed with the small size, weight and ultimately, the image quality.
      Will I sell my large inventory of Nikon gear that includes a Z9, 2 D850s and 2 D750s and lenses, as well as my F6 and 3 F5s? Absolutely not! I will use both systems and for different shooting scenarios, especially when I shoot film.
      The Olympus and OM Systems cameras and lenses are a very welcome addition to my toolbox and I'm enjoying learning this new system.

      Chris, while researching the EM1 a long time ago I remember calling my family to watch your videos because your tenacity in persisting with environments that project the cold even from the TV screen was admirable and inspiring (no worries there). You also being a great photographer in these harsh realms results in some truly original and stunning work. I am a long term Digital Olympus user (17 years!) and have been patiently waiting for a (any) camera that can cover my unique requirements with the additional hope that that it can cover almost every situation (especially including pro video capability)... I'm delighted to know that Olympus is the brand that has emerged to meet this requirement (and way more!). Great work over the years. Keep it up. Thanks.

      Great review, indoor explanation combined with outdoors images and video. Seems that OM is targeting action, sports and wildlife photographers. The best news is that OM System will keep updating their cameras and lenses so giving confidence for their customers. The proof of the pudding will be updating the lower models to keep with new technologies.

    • @weisserth
      @weisserth 2 роки тому +1

      What's your commentary on the higher price point?
      I think the camera price is justified, but a battery is $100 now, the grip is a whopping $350, so a full kit (body, grip, 3 extra batteries) goes up beyond USD3,000 for most buyers. Compared to the E-M1 III and its accessories that is quite the price hike.

    Chris, I highly value your impression, a.k.a., review, of the OM-1. Presenting it as a tool that can help a photographer / videographer create their work product is more valuable than discussing numbers on a spec sheet. Well done.
    Another benefit of your presentation is that it shows that the new majority owner of the Olympus camera department is carrying forward the legacy of the OM System that Yoshihisa Maitani began in 1972.

  • @TL-xw6fh

    Looks like one seriously big upgrade and a camera to be reckoned with. I bought the original OM-1 in 1975 (and still have it!), and I just wish that all Olympus users/enthusiasts should start a campaign for Olympus to allow OM System to continue using the famous Olympus name on all future OM System cameras. The legacy should continue!

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  2 роки тому +2

      It sure is a respectable upgrade! I have a few original OM-1's around the house too. Love them!
      It might be sad to see the Olympus logo go... but it's still embedded in the OM name I suppose. Also, I don't think the people behind OM System will ever forget where they came from. The legacy will live on.

    Thanks for producing this video! I'm definitely going to buy one when I have the money! I'm glad to see that OM System has finally recognized that their primary target market for a new flagship camera is outdoor photography and created a camera to exploit that market. I am really glad to see that it has subject recognition for mammals and better tracking since I do a lot of wildlife photography and sometimes equine photography. Perhaps the subject tracking in this camera is such that I won't be buying a Sony RX10 IV for photographing birds in flight after all, especially since this camera has twice the frame rate, so even if it does miss more often, there will still be more in-focus shots to choose from. The additional dynamic range, high ISO performance, improved IBIS, and Live ND will be useful for landscape photography too. And I'm glad they haven't overpriced it like they did with the E-M1X.
    Going forward, OM System needs to recognize that the smaller sensors in their cameras are ideal for the following types of photography and design their cameras and lenses to exploit those strengths:
    1. Real estate photography: Smaller cameras, lenses, and strobes, thanks to more depth of field at the same aperture.
    2. Equine photography: The 40-150 f/2.8 is lighter than a full frame 70-200 and there is no need for a shallower depth of field.
    3. Macro photography: More depth of field at the same aperture and smaller lenses plus in-camera focus stacking and bracketing.
    4. Adventure photography: Less weight, better weather sealing
    5. Wildlife photography: Smaller lenses with longer focal lengths make handholding possible. Pro Capture is a game changer too.
    6. Sports photography: Pro Capture is a game changer. Smaller lenses are easier to handhold.
    7. Travel photography: Small cameras and lenses are easier to travel with and don't cost as much if they are lost or stolen.
    8. Landscape photography: Smaller, lighter lenses are easier to carry on long hikes and IBIS makes tripod unnecessary in many situations, saving even more weight.
    Until a few years ago, it seemed that Olympus was mostly stuck on #7 and I'm glad to see that they are finally making progress on numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 with this new camera.

    Thanks for the time you spent on putting up this video. My first mirrorless camera was the OMD EM5 first version. Back then it was a great little camera. Something I could take with me anywhere when I get tired of lugging around the Full frame DSLRs.. Fast forward 2021/2022, I still have the OMD EM5 + 25mm 1.8. No plans of selling it. I still shoot with canon and Fuji systems too. I was never happy with the OMD EM1 mk 3 AF. Pretty incosistent for my liking when shooting birds in flight not to mention, I could not push the ISO to 6400 whereas I could easily push my Full frame to 12,800 or even higher when needed to shoot wildlife in twilight.. OM-1 looks great but thing is, the price is in the Full Frame territory. For someone who don't need 120fps or someone not sliding down the snow slopes or shooting in blizzard, it's hard to justify spending that much money for a sensor that's half the size. At least it's good to see that Olympus camera market is still keeping afloat despite the heavy competition nowadays.

Coming from FF cameras before I've often been tempted to return, but I love weather that most people would rather stay indoors and Oly - oops OM - has always allowed me to dismiss those concerns of weather sealing. In addition good glass does not come cheap so selling out to jump ship, is only doable for those who can afford to. Try getting heated glove liners and mittens that have a fold down top exposing your fingers which will be covered by the heated glove liner. I also replaced the small batteries with larger ones I carry in my pockets connected by a usb cable going thru my coat sleeve. Have tested this setup in 2F here in the Hudson Valley for over two hours and the bigger batteries could have gone many more hours. My fingers were toasty warm and I was able to use all the controls on the camera including the touch screen. The liners have a special pad that works on the touch screen.

    As always, the best (by a distance) review of Olympus/OM. Hugely engaging to me and my sort of dreams (and occasional reality). Fabulous storytelling and the best explanation of how and why on the internet. That 12-100 might be just the thing for my next expedition. I'm going to sell various bits to fund it! So much love to you dude. Inspiration lived!.

    That mountain biking video was incredible… I am buying this camera right now if it can make me be able to produce such awesomeness🤪😅 in all seriousness, the MTB videos was exceptional and, I know you produced it as a way to demonstrate the kinds of content that could be created with this camera… but it just reminded me of the incredible skill and know how that must be obtained to produce such a work.
    I realize this in every area of life… there is no free lunch. Commit to your craft, become excellent in performing it and do not tire in your pursuit of excellence.
    Such skill… it is truly excellent and it seems to be such a shame that it is so evanescent.

    Well said!. Refreshing to see a professional getting the most out of a product instead of a reading a checklist of what it should have, but doesn't.
    I love the micro four thirds system. I've used it from the start. I started with a E-1 four thirds system. Olympus glass is unbeatable. The 12-100mm f4 is favourite travel lens. People still laugh when they ask me what I use. Anything that's not full frame can't be good can it?

    I’m looking to upgrade from a 10 year old OMD EM10, the resolution of new cameras are getting wild, 40 Mb for some Fuji, but going over to another system would make the lenses I have redundant, so the improvements over the past 10 years and the added 50Mb and 80Mb focus stacking options, as well as the weather sealing is definitely making me lean to the new OM1, as I will be moving to a warmer climate, where humidity, and sand will be factors. I’m also keen in utilising the focus stacking for astrophotography / night photography. This potentially, seems like an ideal camera for my uses.

    I've been growing with the M4/3 format for the last three years while I've been living in Rwanda and the benefits of the system are perfect for me. Lightweight, rugged, durable, versatile, and affordable. However, there are a few things I've been looking for... namely better autofocus, better low-light performance, and a new sensor for improved image quality. I think the OM-1 might be my perfect next camera.

    Mounteering, motorsports and equestrian are my subjects so weather is major issue. I have been looking at the OM system for this reason. Your experiences have enlightened me. I shall be picking the OM1, improvements in the EVF and articulating screen over the EM1-X make the difference, and the 12-100mm F4 Pro along with the 100-400 will part of the new setup.

    I am a full-frame shooter (due to my love for vintage lenses) but I am impressed how far 4/3 cameras were coming. I am planning to move to another continent with a lot of rain and I am considering to sell my 160 lenses and numerous full-frame cameras and to switch to the OM-1 for not having to deal with humidity concerns for my gear. I also like the idea for not walking/driving around with intimidating lenses and having a great combination of photo and video capabilities. 20MB photo format is sufficient for my scope of work (Internet). Currently I am even using sometimes my old A7S with vintage lenses and the resulting 12MB pictures are more than large enough for getting published in the web. My 42MB cameras are hardly used since I am composing my shoots properly and must not need to crop much. So thank you for providing me inspiration how I might be able to use the OM-1 for my work.

    • @Bytesmiths
      @Bytesmiths 2 роки тому

      Don't sell those vintage lenses! Get.a Metabones Speedbooster Ultra!
      If those 160 lenses are all on the same mount, the MSU is a bargain! Even if split among several mounts, than number of lenses justifies several speed boosters.
      I shoot a LOT of Olympus OM film lenses on my OM-D bodies. A good speed booster makes an old lens sing on µ4/3rds!

    I have the Em1 Mkii and love it. For all of the people begging for 24 MP, there are software tools that can double or quadruple the size of your image and if the original image is sharp, it's almost impossible to tell it has been enlarged. 20 is fine. This camera should do well. Olympus video is stunning.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  2 роки тому

      I loved my Mark II too! 20MP is 15MP more than you need to print in decent size. So yes, it's enough.

    • @markbielick2313
      @markbielick2313 2 роки тому

      Uhhh no.. Gigapixel is great for improving detail, but it can't add detail that isn't there. I know. I've tried many times. 24MP would have put the MFT in the same league as the better high res FF cameras. 20MP is OK, as long as you don't have to crop more than 10%. I'll keep my Olympus for standard imaging, but when I need high res, I guess I still will fall back on my Nikon.

    • @ValiRossi
      @ValiRossi 2 роки тому

      @@markbielick2313 I never said it would improve detail. I didn't say it would add detail. It can maintain a good level of detail at double the size on a sharp image tho. Define improve detail vs. add detail. What do you mean "standard imaging"?
      I will say it does weird things with face refinement. I saw it turn an ear into a creepy looking face. Yikes.

    • @markbielick2313
      @markbielick2313 2 роки тому

      @@ValiRossi Take a picture of a tree from 1/2 mile away. My 36MP D810 will resolve the leaves. My 20MP Olympus will have tiny smudges where the leaves are. No matter how much image enhancement you do (gigapixel) it will never turn the smudges into leaves. Just larger smudges. Standard imaging is what I consider portraits, family pics, and street photos. High res is not needed there, and 20MP will work all day. I'll use my D810 for the landscapes.

    • @ValiRossi
      @ValiRossi 2 роки тому

      @@markbielick2313 I also have a D810. I would never shoot through a half mile of air and try to enlarge it. The lens has something to do with this also.
      But you knew that.
      BTW, A 20 MP M43 sensor has 300 pixels per millimeter. If you calculate what that would be for APS-C or FF, you would have the following.
      Approximately 30 MP for Canon APS-C
      Approximately 32 MP for Nikon/Sony/Fuji APS-C
      Approximately 77 MP for FF.
      Of course, the lens will project a different size circle based on the sensor size. FF lenses project a larger image circle. That is an advantage.
      You can't compare sensors with different aspect ratios 1 to 1. 20 is fine.

    Your projects in Norway is something very similar to the work I do, just without this epic backdrop :)
