He’s right. We’re never getting houses. I’m grateful for my nice little apartment with kind caring neighbors. Plus I live five minutes from the ocean and the beach is great for relaxing. It’s the little things that make life okay. Love Trevor’s humor about things though.
Humor aside. The lesson here between renting a house and owning a house, is phenomenal. I have picked up that owning a house is pretty expensive than renting. Trevor Noah, all the love from South Africa, Gauteng, Johannesburg, Eden Park.
It depends, I pay significantly less in mortgage than rent around here. Rent for a 1 bd or 2bd can range from $1100 - $2000 or even more. My 1800 sq ft home with 3 bds is $1400 a month. And here’s the thing, my mortgage doesn’t move, so no rent hikes or increases each year and it’s also increased in value (if I were to sell). Yes, you do have to pay for maintenance/repair but that’s not a constant (unless your house is run down), but even then you start to learn how to fix things on your own. Theres also other things to consider, once the house is paid you can pass it down, rent it out, do whatever. With renting you are paying forever.
Depends on the area and what you do for work. Renting is fantastic if you like moving around and your work allows for living in different places. Owning is great if you get the right house in an area you enjoy being in (or for the business savvy an area just on the beginning of the gentrification curve). Both can be great, and both can be terrible, completely up to the given situation.
It is often cheaper to rent at the point of entry, but your rent will increase every year with inflation, whereas if you own your home, as you pay of the mortgage, you pay less and less over time, so ten years down the line the person who bought their home will be better off than the one renting. And when you get old, you can sell your home, move someplace smaller and have a nice nest egg.
