From the far east, I send you one single thought, one sole idea-- written in red on every beach head from Australia to Tokyo-- There is no substitute for victory.
Very interesting people. Remember when mcarther wanted to nuke the entire north korea chinese border? I wonder what kind of world we would live in if Truman gave him the go.
It sounds crazy today, but from a fighting pov it makes sense. WW2 Europe: Germany was gradually squeezed from all directions. WW2 Pacific: Japan was gradually squeezed on each island it occupied. Either surrender to MacArthur's forces, die, or swim away. WW2 Asia mainland: Japan was squeezed by the Chinese. Korean War: the big problem was the continuous flow of enemy troops coming in from China. So how do you stop it? MacArthur's idea was to make the NK/Chinese border not crossable - make the Korean peninsula like an island. That way, you could then squeeze NK until they surrender. I'm not making a judgement on whether if it was right or wrong - just saying that was MacArthur's strategy.
@ makin-A_toll the problem with the manchurian - north korean border is the proximity to the soviet far east. the use of atomic bombs would inevitably irradiate large parts of manchuria, north korea and the soviet far east and in particular vladivostock which is russia's city bordering the northern pacific ocean. the use of atomic weapons would undoubtedly brought in the soviets into the war and it would potentially escalate to a much wider war. POLITICALLY the price would be too great and especially since it was only 5 or 6 years since the end of world war two for the european allies and the war in the pacific against the japanese. one must bear in mind that the soviets had only recently acquired the atomic bomb in 1949
Thanks for this post I wanted to know what Patton thought of him. My Grandpa was in Patton's 3rd Army and thought General Patton was a great man and leader.
Shame MacArthur couldn't get Patton a position in the Pacific theater of WWII. The Japanese called MacArthur Gaijin Shogun (Foreign Generalissimo), imagine if Blood and Guts was leading his men taking Iwo Jima, Okinawa before setting foot on Tokyo.
In fairness to Macarthur, Patton was a Major in the 1930s when Macarthur was chief of staff and Patton commanded a squadron in the 3rd Cavalry, so he may have just gotten mixed up.
I think Gen Pattons letter to the wife shared some insight into what both men were thinking of each other doing the moment of the barrage of indirect fire creeping upon them on the hill. Wow, two colorful men of stature trying to outdo one another in the game of chicken. As the commentator mentioned, perhaps WWII would resulted differently if both men were killed on that day.
This presentation may be the most professional, succinct and objective presentation I've ever seen...congratulations!
Patton: The object of war is not to die for your country, it's to make the other bastard die for his.
MacArthur: There is no substitute for victory.

We don't have Generals like these two anymore!
Gen. Patton would go on to say that Gen. MacArthur was the bravest man he ever met. Great presentation.

Every one of these videos remains fascinating! Thank you!
You make a fella want to learn more about history.

Are there third party witnesses to this encounter? Thanks.

MacArthur abandoned his men in the Philippines

Danm that’s like a hardcore mode staring contest. Who will duck and cover first?
Both were prideful men, with huge egos
Probably argued over who had more tiktok views
William Manchester wrote MacArthur told Patton “Don’t worry, Major; you never hear the one that gets you.” Was that ever true?
